He came up and asked me nervously, "Can you sign this?" I took his yearbook but I didn't know what to write. I saw that there was the name "Ricky Sanders" written on the front of it. So I wrote:

I put down the yearbook and turned around to get some signatures from some of my friends when I4 my yearbook was gone. I saw that Ricky had sat down with my yearbook. "What are you doing?" I asked him. He looked up calmly and 5said "Sign!"

五、阅读理解

  • 29. 读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容,在每小题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。

What do you do if you're stranded (处于困境的) on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.

    Body signals (信号)

Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (弯曲) your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

    Smoke signals

The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it's a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn't hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a fire unless you're sure that it can't spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.

    Ground-to-air signals

It's a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols(标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:

F "I need food and water."

    II "I need medicine "

    I "I am badly hurt."

X" I am unable to move from here."

    Pilots' replies

If the pilot lowers the plane's wings from side to side, this means "message received and understood". (At night, the pilot flashes the plane's green lights.) If the pilots flies the plane in a clockwise circle, this means "message received but not understood".(At night, the pilot flashes the plane's red lights.)

However, there is no signal which means "message not received". Why not?

    (1) Which picture means "it's not safe land"?
    A . B . C . D .
    (2) What can we learn from the passage?
A . Swinging your arm from side to side means "yes". B . If the ground is dark, light smoke can't be seen. C . If you need some medicine, make a symbol "II". D . The pilots make replies with a blue light at night.
    (3) What is the passage mainly about?
A . The explanation of building signals on an island. B . The importance of making signals on an island. C . Ways of sending out signals on a lonely island. D . Ways of receiving signals from a lonely island.

"Where's Papa going with the ax(斧子)?" said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

"Out to the pig house," replied Mrs. Arable. "Some pigs were born last night."

"I don't see why he needs an ax," continued Fern, who was only eight.

"Well," said her mother, "one of the pigs is a runt. It's very small and weak, and it will never grow up to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it."

"Do away with it?" screamed Fern. "You mean kill it? Just because it's smaller than the others?" Mrs. Arable put some cream on the table. "Don't cry, Fern!" she said. "Your father is right. The pig would probably die anyway."

Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. The grass was wet and the earth smelled of springtime. Fern's sneakers(运动鞋)were all wet by the time she caught up with her father.

"Please don't kill it!" she cried. "It's unfair." Mr. Arable stopped walking.

"Fern," he said gently, "you will have to learn to control yourself."

"Control myself?" cried Fern. "This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself." Tears ran down her face and she took hold of the ax and tried to pull it out of her father's hand.

"Fern," said Mr. Arable, "I know more about raising a litter of pigs than you do. A weakling makes trouble. Now run along!"

"But it's unfair(不公平)," cried Fern. "The pig couldn't help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?"

Mr. Arable smiled. "Of course not," he said, looking down at his daughter with love. "But this is different. A little girl is one thing, a little runty pig is another."

"I see no difference," replied Fern, still hanging on to the ax. "This is the most terrible case of injustice(不公正) I ever heard of."

A queer look came over John Arable's face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.

"All right," he said. You go back to the house and I will bring the runt when I come in. I'll let you start it on a bottle, like a baby. Then you'll see what trouble a pig can be."

    (1) We can infer from the text that Mr Arable               .
A . does not like raising little pigs B . has had little experience raising pigs C . makes a living by doing with little pigs D . has probably raised many pigs in his lifetime
    (2) Mr Arable seemed almost ready to cry because he               .
A . is angry about what his daughter has done B . does not like to lose an argument with his daughter C . gets worried about how difficult it would be to raise the pig D . is touched by his daughter's willingness to stand up for the little pig
    (3) We can tell that Mr Arable agrees to let the little pig go because               .
A . he finally agrees with his daughter B . he believes that the pig will die soon C . he believes that raising a pig will teach Fern some lessons D . he realizes that taking care of a little pig is not that difficult

    Dear Linda,

"The only constant (不变的) in life is change." Have you heard about it before? It means that life is always changing and bringing us new challenges.

I've experienced it many times throughout my life. New teachers, new coworkers…it can be difficult to deal with sometimes. And not all change is good. It can be frustrating (令人沮丧的) to get used to new situations.

However, I do have some suggestions. First, you can talk with your teacher after class and discuss your problem. Do make sure to be polite when you do this – it's not necessarily your teacher's fault that you're having difficulty with her methods. Try to find some common ground. Good teachers will do their best to make sure that all of the students in their classes can benefit (从……受益) from their teaching.

    —Mike

    Dear Linda,

You should know that studying English is important for your future, but not for your teacher. Try to talk to your teacher. If they can't help you, I'm afraid you will have to solve the problem by yourself.

I assume (假定) that this teacher is not the only English teacher in your school. You could ask other English teachers some questions during your breaks. You also can learn English outside of school, such as by taking an online English course. You can surely find a suitable teacher for yourself.

All in all, if you don't want to give up studying English, then you'd better work hard on it, no matter who teaches you. It's always a good idea to be optimistic (积极的) about any situation you're in.

    —Zhao Xin

    (1) What is Linda's problem?
A . She can't find a good English teacher B . She doesn't want to take on any new challenge C . She has some difficulty understanding her new English teacher D . She finds it difficult to accept her teacher's teaching methods
    (2) Both Mike and Zhao Xin suggest that Linda should               .
A . try to change herself first B . give up studying English C . communicate with her new English teacher D . find another English teacher to ask questions
    (3) Which is the most suitable sentence for       ?
A . Change is useful. B . Change is hard. C . Change is necessary. D . Change is important.
    (4) We can learn from the text that               .
A . Mike used to be worried about new situations too B . Mike is also a student who used to have this problem C . Zhao Xin knows a lot of English teacher online D . Zhao Xin is an English teacher who understands students
