    "Down the streets of Portsmouth more than two hundred years ago," said Lt. General Ira C. Eaker in a speech, "walked a sailor with one arm and one eye. Indeed he would probably have been in a home for incurables, were his name not Horatio Nelson. The man's spirit drove the flesh."

    Born in 1758, Nelson was a small and weak child who loved sailing. As a young teenager he joined the British Navy and, while on a journey, caught a fever that seriously damaged his health. But he never allowed this to hold him back. At 18 he was appointed a lieutenant (上尉) in the Royal Navy and by the year 1803 was made commander-in-chief of the British fleet (舰队).

    Two years later, on 21 October, at the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets. This naval victory left the British in control of the seas for the rest of the 1800's. Nelson was, unfortunately, badly wounded during the battle but lived long enough to know that his fleet had won the battle.

    Nelson believed in his country, in his cause, and in himself. He proved this with his words and more so with his life. The British philosopher John Stuart Mill would agree.

    As John put it, "One person with a belief is equal to a force of ninety-nine who only have interest." Why is this so? Belief is remarkably powerful in that it is to our life what a rudder (舵) is to a ship. That is, it controls the direction of our lives. Simply put it, if one believes he is a failure, he will set himself up to fail. If he considers himself to be a successful person, he will succeed.

    Dr. Joyce Brothers, a well-known author and psychologist said, "A person's self-concept is the central part of his personality. It affects every aspect of human behavior. It's no exaggeration (夸张) to say that a strong positive self-concept is the best possible preparation for success in life."

    A loving person lives in a loving world, while a hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone you meet is your mirror.

    Mirrors have a very particular function. They reflect the image in front of them and so do all of the people in our lives.

    When we see something beautiful such as a flower garden, that garden serves as a reflection. In order to see the beauty in front of us, we must be able to see the beauty inside ourselves. When we love someone, it's a reflection of loving ourselves. We have often heard things like "I love how I am when I'm with that person." That simply translates as "I'm able to love myself when I love that person." Mostly, when we meet someone new, we feel as though we "click". Sometimes it's as if we've known each other for a long time. That feeling can come from sharing similarities.

    Just as the "mirror" or another person can be a positive reflection, it is more likely that we'll notice it when it has a negative message. For example, it's easy to remember the moments when we have met someone we're not particularly crazy about.

    Frequently, when we dislike qualities in other people, ironically (讽刺地), it's usually the mirror that's speaking to us. It is not when I start complaining nor is it a time when I pick on the annoying one. Rather, I begin questioning myself further each time I meet someone that I don't particularly like. I ask myself, "Is there something similar in me?" Occasionally, I could see a piece of that quality in myself. It means that just as I can get annoyed or disturbed when I notice that aspect in someone else, I better reexamine my qualities and consider making some changes.

    At times we meet someone new and feel distant, disconnected, or annoyed. Although we don't want to believe it, and it's not easy or desirable to look further, it can be a great learning lesson to figure out what part of the person is being reflected in you. It's simply just another way to create more self-awareness.

    While rhythms in the foreground of music are often dominated (支配) by higher tones, rhythms in the background of music are often made up of lower tones, such as the bass lines of jazz and blues, and the left-hand and low-pitched rhythms of the piano.

    "Music in diverse cultures is composed this way, from classical East Indian music to Gamelan music of Java and Bali, suggesting an inborn origin," said Laurel Trainor. To find out why lower tones might dominate rhythms in music, Laurel Trainor and her co-workers had 35 volunteers listen to two streams of piano tones produced in a computer, each of a different pitch (音调).

    In one set of experiments, the researchers scanned the brain activity of the volunteers as they listened to these streams of tones, showing the brains of the participants responded more strongly when the lower tones were off beat. In another set of experiments, the researchers had the volunteers tap their fingers in time with the streams of tones, and they discovered the participants changed their finger tapping to follow changes in timing of the lower tones more often than for the higher tones.

    These findings suggest people are better at detecting mistakes in the timing of a rhythm when they happen with lower tones, which could explain why lower tones dominate musical rhythms. "There is a physiological basis for why we create music the way we do," Trainor said. "Almost all people will respond more to the beat when it is carried by lower-pitched instruments."

    Trainor and her co-workers also found that people are better at sensing the higher-pitched of two real-time sounds. This could explain why rhythms are commonly expressed by higher tones.

    "Indeed, high-pitched instruments can carry important rhythmic aspects―for example in jazz, higher-pitched instruments often add rhythmic interest—so the rhythm is an interaction between different instruments," Trainor said. "What we are saying is that most typically bass-range instruments lay down the basic beat."

    By the time I was called "Queen of English" in my class, I have become known to the whole school. It wasn't from nowhere where I got a popularity. I started working hard on the English language when I came into senior school. I used a dictionary to find the meaning of each words in popular songs. After a period of hard work, I was starting to understanding more and could translate texts, dialogues and songs better than I never had. The more I practiced, the easier I found to achieve fluency and accuracy. When it comes to pronunciation, the only source I had was songs.
