    Grand Opening

Bentwood Truck Museum Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 A.M.

After eighteen months of hard work by more than 100 volunteers, the Bentwood Truck Museum is ready to open. The old factory on the corner of Palmer Street and Norman Drive had been scheduled to be destroyed. When Roger Haygood heard about the plans to tear down the building, he bought it so that he could store his collection of old trucks there. Then he had the idea of turning the building into a truck museum.

During the past year and a half, the old building has been transformed into a treasure chest of memories. Instead of a dark and dull house, the building has become a cheery, bright home for all kinds of trucks from the past.

The museum now houses 68 trucks, and we hope to have even more soon. There is a 1959 school bus, a 1942 bakery truck, and a 1937 fire engine. Our oldest vehicle is a 1919 milk truck. Our newest vehicle is a 1966 tow truck.

You can take a ride on a fire truck, a mail truck, or an ice-cream truck. Rides are $2.00, but you can get a ticket for a free ride at any grocery store in Bentwood.

Help us celebrate our grand opening by bringing your family and friends! There is something to interest everyone who attends. The Bentwood Truck Museum is a special piece of our history.

    * To get to Bentwood Truck Museum, take Route 29 (Kingston Highway) to Palmer Street.

    * Go south on Palmer Street for one block and take a left onto Norman Drive.

    * You will see the museum building and the amusement park on your left.

    * Parking is available across the street, on your right.

I turned 8 years old the day I skipped school for the first time. It was easily done: Both my parents left for work before my school bus arrived on weekdays, so when it showed up at my house on that cold winter morning, I simply did not get on. The perfect crime!

And what did I do with myself on that glorious stolen day, with no adult in charge and no limits on my activities? Did I get high? Hit the mall for a shoplifting extravaganza (狂欢)?

Nope. I built a warm fire in the wood stove, prepared a bowl of popcorn, grabbed a blanket, and read. I was thrilled and transported by a book—it was Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises—and I just needed to be alone with it for a little while. I ached to know what would happen to Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley and Robert Cohn. I couldn't bear the thought of sitting in a classroom taking another exam when I could be traveling through Spain in the 1920s with a bunch of expatriates (异乡客).

I spent that day lost in words. Time fell away, as the room around me turned to mist, and my role—as a daughter, sister, teenager, and student—in the world no longer had any meaning. I had accidentally come across the key to perfect happiness: I had become completely absorbed by something I loved.

Looking back on it now, I can see that some subtle things were happening to my mind and to my life while I was in that state of absorption. Hemingway's language was quietly braiding itself into my imagination. I was downloading information about how to create simple and elegant sentences, a good and solid plot. In other words, I was learning how to write. Without realizing it, I was hot on the trail of my own fate. Writing now absorbs me the way reading once did and happiness is their generous side effect.

    (1) Why did the author skip school on that day?
A . Because her parents left home early. B . Because it was a biting cold winter morning. C . Because she was fascinated by a novel. D . Because she was anxious to take the exam.
    (2) What did the author think is the source of true joy?
A . Reading a fiction by the fire. B . Travelling with a bunch of expatriates. C . Breaking the rules and regulations. D . Being occupied by one's passion.
    (3) Which can best replace the underlined phrase "braiding itself into" in the last paragraph?
    A . Entering. B . Destroying. C . Mending. D . Blocking.
    (4) What can we infer from the passage?
A . The author was tired of his roles in the real-life. B . Writing has a horrible effect on the author's life now. C . The author skipped school when he was 8 years old. D . Becoming a writer is the author's childhood dream.

For the past 3000 years, when people thought of money, they thought of cash. From buying food to settling bar bills, day-to-day dealings involved paper or clinking bits of metal. Over the past decade, however, digital payments have taken off — tapping your credit card on a terminal or using a smart phone has become normal. Now this revolution is about to turn cash into an endangered species in some rich economies. That will make the economy more efficient, but it also poses new problems that could make the change victim.

Countries are eliminating(消除) cash at varying speeds. But the direction of travel is clear, and in some cases the journey is nearly complete. In Sweden the number of retail cash transactions per person has fallen by 80% in the past ten years. Cash accounts for just 6% of purchases by value in Norway. Britain is probably four or six years behind the Nordic countries. America is perhaps a decade behind. Outside the rich world, cash is still king. But even there its dominance is being weakened. In China, digital payments rose from 4% of all payments in 2012 to 84% in 2020.

Cash is dying out because of two forces. One is demand — younger consumers want payment systems that plug seamlessly(无缝地) into their digital lives. But equally important, suppliers such as banks and tech firms (in developed markets) and telecoms companies (in emerging ones) are developing fast, easy-to-use payment technologies from which they can pull data and pocket fees.

In general, the outlook of a cashless economy is excellent news. Cash is inefficient. In rich countries, minting, sorting, storing and distributing it is estimated to cost about 0.5% of GDP. But that does not begin to capture the gains. When payments disappear, people and shops are less fragile to theft. Governments can keep a closer eye on fraud or illegal tax avoidance. Digitalization vastly expands the playground of small businesses and sole traders by enabling them to sell beyond their borders. It also creates a credit history, helping consumers borrow.

    (1) What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A . To show the background of using cash. B . To introduce the main topic of the text. C . To present the development of cash. D . To explain the history of digital payments.
    (2) Which of the following statement is true according to the passage?
A . Sweden has already completely eliminated cash. B . Digital payments have replaced cash in rich countries. C . Britain develops faster than China in digital payments. D . Both developed and developing countries are using cash less.
    (3) What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A . The ways of digital payments. B . The effects of cash dying out. C . The reasons for cash being endangered. D . The importance of digital payments.
    (4) What is the author's attitude towards the future of cashless economy?
    A . Ambiguous. B . Optimistic. C . Indifferent. D . Disapproving.

Earth's tallest animal is in deep trouble. Wild giraffe populations are falling rapidly, with recent survey data showing its numbers have fallen more than 40 percent. And unlike the well-known plight (困境) of gorillas, elephants, rhinos, and other disappearing African animals, the decline of these giants has gone largely unnoticed.

Giraffes that are extreme high — adult males can stand nearly 6 meters tall — still live in 21 countries in Africa, but their habitat is being repurposed for human use, especially agriculture. Even in places where their native grasslands remain excellent, small and separate habitat caused by development elsewhere can restrict their range and prevent genetic diversity. And climate change can encourage lengthy droughts, which lead desperate giraffes to feed on farmers' crops, making them seem like pests to local communities.

Illegal hunting also contributes to the decline of the animals. Humans have a long history of hunting giraffes, seeking food as well as thick skin to make clothing and other items. But a belief that giraffes' brains and bones can cure HIV has gained wide attention in Tanzania, reportedly pushing prices for giraffes' heads and bones are as high as $140 per piece. Usually, with a single gunshot, a giraffe can be hunted. So they've become an extra income among Africa's growing groups of elephant hunters.

When humans try something risky to hunt for giraffes, however, there's evidence that they can improve the animals' fortunes. The West African giraffe, for example, was pushed to the edge of extinction in the 1990s. Down to just 50 in 1996, the subspecies won legal protection from the government of Niger, helping it grow to 250 in 2010. Conservationists have also worked with villages in Niger and planted 5,300 acacia(相思) trees since 2012, reducing the need for the giraffes to destroy crops.

That their number grows in recent years suggests that there is still time to save other giraffes, too." This stresses the value of making positive giraffe conservation and management efforts to protect critical populations across the continent,” says Arthur Muneza, East Africa speaker for the GEF. "It is high time that we increased our efforts."

    (1) What is ignored by people according to the author?
A . Wild animals' habitat being destroyed B . The number of elephants being smaller C . Gorillas and rhinos becoming endangered D . The rapid decrease of the number of wild giraffes
    (2) Which of the following factors influence the survival of giraffes according to the text?

    ① habitat loss ② serious diseases ③ people's hunting ④ climate change

    A . ①②③ B . ①②④ C . ①③④ D . ②③④
    (3) It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that ____.
A . it is quite hard for people to catch giraffes B . hunting giraffes is a way to attract foreign tourists C . it is very profitable to trade giraffes' heads and bones illegally D . local people use giraffes' bones to prevent HIV from spreading
    (4) Which of the following would be the best title for this text?
A . Giraffes' fortune might be improved B . How can people protect wild giraffes? C . Wild giraffes need legal protection now D . Why are wild giraffes suffering a silent extinction?

Many people choose to apologize in person because it often conveys more sincerity.. Here are some tips on how to write an apology letter.

. It is a good idea to begin by showing that this letter is an apology. This will give the person you are apologizing to the chance to put himself or herself emotionally in the right place to read the rest of your letter. Say something like: "I wanted to write you a letter to apologize for what I did".

State your mistake and be nice about it. Now that you have acknowledged that you are apologizing, say what you're apologizing for and why it was incorrect.. By fully putting it out there in the open, the person that you're apologizing to will know that you really understand what you did.

Express your gratitude. If you want to, though it is not required, you can acknowledge all the hard work and good things that the person you are apologizing to have done for you in the past. This shows that you appreciate him or her. .

Offer a solution that will lead to change.. What really gives an apology some effectiveness is finding a way to solve the problem in the future. This shows the person that you're really serious about making the situation better.

    A. State what your letter is about

    B. Just saying that you're sorry isn't really enough

    C. Acknowledge how much you have hurt him or her

    D. Be very exact and descriptive and don't leave anything out

    E. Besides, it can help show that you really feel bad about what you've done
