We are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet? Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks didn't work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way computer network system would keep on working all the time.
At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to used it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. Scientists had also developed software that made "surfing" the Internet more convenient.
Today it is easy to get on-line and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day. Sending e-mail is more and more popular among the students. The Internet has now become one of the most important parts of people's life.
Life in an American high school is an interesting and exciting learning experience. High school in America is not just a place for studying some subjects. It is also an important social centre, where students can develop other interests and talents.
The high school course is divided into four years. The teenager usually starts school about 8:00 a. m, and ends at 3 p.m. There is no school on weekends. Students have lunch at the school cafeteria. After lunch they play sports, talk to friends or simply relax. The lunch break lasts about an hour.
When the school day ends, some students go home, but many still stay at school for after-school activities. There are many activities and clubs to choose. In the afternoon many students practise sports with the school students team. Sports are an important part of high school life. American high school students like to be "popular". This means being a good student, being active in the community and being well-liked by others. Most American high school students have part-time job during the school year and a full-job during the summer. Parents encourage their children to work because it's part of growing up and becoming responsible and independent. Most high schools have a job list to help students find work. Teenagers are fond of their jobs!
Children like to copy what they hear. They copy their parents, their friends and even the TV. This teaches them how to1 the language. Copying also does good to students of a second language. When you listen to foreigners speak English, repeat what they say 2you can. Children don't practice grammar, but use the language to talk about things that interest them. They don't 3 their vocabulary or poor grammar. They find ways to 4themselves, and they do it successfully.
Students of English school also pay their attention to communication. Look for5 to talk with people in English. If you can't find a foreigner to talk to, talk with 6 students. You can join an English club or go to an English club or go to an English corner. Don't worry about 7, what you want is to learn how to communicate easily and comfortably. Remember that you communicate successfully even with a 8vocabulary.
Eating out is one of the joy of being in the USA. The food is usually good and often excellent; the p are reasonable; and the service is mostly fine. Some restaurants are o for breakfast; others are open twenty-four hours a day. A number of restaurants call themselves "family restaurants". Many of these serve no alcohol and all are at very reasonable prices. Many restaurants, especially the more expensive ones, open at about 11:30a.m. It is the most n time for lunch in the USA, and some remain open until the evening, so it is p to order a meal throughout the afternoon. When you a at most restaurant, you should not just go in and sit down—unless you see a sign saying "Please seat yourself". Usually you will have to wait for a waiter to escort(陪同)you to a table. Do not expect to s a table with other parties, even if the restaurant is crowed. It just isn't done. Many restaurant have a no-smoking section, in some place by laws.
