One evening, a boy and his grandfather went for a walk. As they walked, they found a pair of old shoes on the road. They thought the shoes must 1 a farmer who was working nearby.     Stephen Hawking is one of the most famous scientists in this century. He was born in 1942. He's world well—known on space and time. Stephen was searching some very big questions, such as "How did the universe begin? How will it end?"

    Stephen was a student at Oxford University. He studied math and science. Then, at the age of twenty, he became sick. He was so young, but the doctors said to his family, "He has only two more years to live." As a matter of fact, the doctors were wrong – he didn't die. He can't walk but he uses a wheelchair. He can't feed himself and get in or out of bed himself. But he refused to give in to the condition. He talks with the help of a computer. After Oxford, Stephen went to Cambridge University. Three years later, in 1965, he became a doctor of philosophy (哲学).

    Because of his serious health problems, it was difficult for him to draw or to write. So he started to think in pictures. With this new way of thinking, he became one of the most famous scientists in the world. In 1981, he met the Pope (教皇) in Rome. They talked about his ideas. Then in 1988, he wrote his first important book, A Brief History of Time. It sold more than 5.5 million copies in 33 different languages. He was once invited to China, he impressed us with his self—confidence, humorous and witty (风趣的) conversation.

    When you talk with someone, you'll need to end your conversation at some point. And there many reasons why you need to do that. Either you or the other person may need to continue an activity, such working or shopping. Or you may have run out of things to say. You just want to keep the conversation short.

    Butdo you end a conversation in a polite way？It may on where and how the conversation started. It may also depend on your relationship with the person. If you already know that person, you can just say, "I need to run now. "Or you can say, "I'll catch you later. "You may also give a reason for ending the conversation. "I really need to go—my piano class starts in ten ."

    Perhaps you just meet someone in a social situation (社交场合), and you have a nice talk. But then you have to go. You can say, "It was nice meeting you. Maybe we can talk happily again sometime in the  . "

    You could use these  to end a conversation, and you should notice that others may also use them.  they do so, you should know that it's time for you to stop and get on with your day.

The Reasons of Learning English

    Today lots of people in China can speak English and more and more people are learning this language. Then what do they learn English for? We have done a survey and here are some people's reasons:

    Alice White: I like traveling by myself very much. I've been to many places in China, and I plan to travel to some foreign countries. English is the most widely used language in the world, so learning English will do great help to my trips.

    Mark Smith: I'm actually not so interested in English. I like Chinese much better. However, I have to learn English. We have to take English exams and the score of English takes a large part in the total score. Luckily, I'm not doing too badly in it, or I'll have to struggle (奋斗) with it.

    Ben Green: It is necessary to learn English. As you know, the competition in the job market is very fierce (激烈的). If I have a good knowledge of English, I will have a chance of getting a good job.

    Kate Lu: It's interesting, isn't it? I can get information that others can't get. I can talk and write letters to interesting people that others can't communicate with. And I can always make people surprised by speaking good English.
