I started to love running at a young age. I loved to race my father and my sister around the backyard. I wished I could run in the Olympics and win lots of  1 .

    One day my mother saw an advertisement for a race in a newspaper. "Would you be interested in  2  part in this race?" She asked me, pointing to the advertisement.

    "Yes, of course." I answered.

    I  3  the next few days practicing for my big race. My sister set up a table in the backyard so she could  4  me water and time.

    On the day of the race, just before the race, my  5 said to me, "Don't   6up all your energy at the beginning of the race. You need to have energy  7  you can run much faster at the end."

    The race  8 . Following dad's words, I didn't run as fast as I could. Then other runners started passing me, which made me feel  9   . I began to feel tired, and I started slowing down and breathing harder.

    Just at that moment I heard, "Come on, Kelly! You can do it! Don't give up. Keep running!" Out of the corner of my 10 , I saw dad running beside me around the outside of the track.

    I took a  11  breath and tried my best to go on running. I didn't win the race. I came fifth, but I felt like a   12  . I had done my best, and I hadn't given up.

    Later, as I thought about the race, I felt  13 that my dad had never left my side. He always  14  me when I feel like giving up. He runs alongside me through my life. I'll remember my dad's words 15 , "Never give up. You can be a winner, even if you lose."

    When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence "How do you do?" for example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.

    Languages don't just have different sounds; they are different in many ways. It's important to master the rules for the word order in the study of English, too. If the speaker puts words in a wrong order, the listener can't understand the speaker's sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes when the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn't change. Let's see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.

    "She only likes apples." "Only she likes apples." "I have seen the movie already." "I have already seen the movie."

    When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit of the language and use it as the English speaker does.

    If you are really interested in music festivals, then you have probably heard of the Bestival Music Festival. It takes place every September on the Island of Wight, the UK. As it is at the end of summer, people think it's their last chance to go to a festival and have fun before going back to boring work.

    The dream begins as soon as you start traveling to the island. In order to get to the campsite (营地) of the Bestival, you have to take the ferry (渡轮). The ferry is full of happy festival lovers who are ready to join in the fantastic music party. After you arrive at the campsite, you can put your tent up. There people talk with each other openly. They are not that cold like those you meet in your everyday life. 

    The festival lasts for four days. During that time you forget all your worries and problems, just like living in a dream. And it is really hard for you to come back to "reality" after that. 

    It seems that Bestival gives people a real sense of unity. I joined in the Bestival with my friends the year before last. It was so happy and we all lost ourselves in the beautiful music. We Are Family sung by Sister Sledge was my favorite. I'm really looking forward to joining in it for a second time.

    We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you. Remember these three words: reduce, reuse and recycle.

    REDUCE

Reduce means "use less." Don't waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary— or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad. It may cost a lot of money to bring them to us.

    REUSE

    Reuse means "use again." Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don't use a paper cup or a paper bag. It's better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.

    RECYCLE

    Recycle means "change things into something else." Although it takes energy to change something into something else, it's better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighborhood and join in recycling programs. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.

    Confidence is very important in daily life. It is (use) to develop a healthy attitude(态度). If people are more confident, they are  happier. And they can have more chances to be  (success). Here are some suggestions to be more confident.

    ★ Speak loud. When you are not confident, you can't do well in  you want to do. Try to speak loud enough so that people can hear you  (clear). The high voice can help you become more confident.

    ★ Play sports. Physical exercise makes you tired but strong. A strong body helps you be full  confidence.

    ★ Encourage yourself.  (write) down a list of things you did during the day to see how many things you have done well. Give yourself praise(表扬) for the good things you have done.

    ★ Pick up a hobby.  you like singing, sing as much as you . In some ways, a hobby can make you excellent. And it will make you  (happy) and confident.

①Gamaham: The most difficult thing about learning English is to remember new words. I study the words and remember them, but a week later I have forgotten most of them. When reading something in English, I always get into trouble when I come across a new word. There must be a better way to learn new words.  

②Viekers: I have been studying English for so long now, and I don't enjoy it any more. I used to like it, but now I feel as if I'm not making any progress. I wish there was something I could do to make me interested in studying English again.   

③Selina: I wish I could improve my spoken English. Every time I join in a group discussion or try to speak English to someone, I find it difficult to express myself. I don't know what to say and I can't think of the words I need.  

④Gina: I don't like English at all. Why do we have to study English? I'd rather spend more time on maths and science, because I think those subjects are more important.  

⑤Jim: I think it's easy to remember new grammar rules, but when writing something I always make a lot of mistakes. How can I learn to use the rules that I have learned?
