It was meant to be the holiday of a lifetime—my first trip abroad alone, without my parents. I had organized everything myself and I would show them how independent I could be.
I had arranged to stay in a farmhouse outside a village in southern Italy. My schedule said that the plane would arrive in Italy at five o'clock in the afternoon and it was a thirty-minute drive from the airport to the village. I wanted to get to my destination before it got dark, so I could have a drink, watch the sunset and enjoy an evening meal.
The problems began at the airport. My plane was three hours late taking off. I walked around the airport, looked in the shops, and drank coffee in the cafes. I didn't eat anything. That was a mistake! When the plane finally took off, they gave me a cold, tasteless meal which I could not eat.
We arrived in Italy in the early evening and I was feeling lightheaded from the Lack of food. The sun was setting as I was collecting my bags! I missed it completely! I went to the desk to find my hire car and that was when I discovered the next problem. The receptionist couldn't find my name in the computer and there were no more cars. There were no buses or trains to the village, and the taxis were in strike.
The receptionist felt sorry for me. She phoned her brother, Alessandro, who agreed to take me to the village. I waited for Alessandro at the front gate and he arrived driving a very old car with smoke pouring out of the engine. We set off. Fifteen minutes later we broke down. I was tired and depressed and very, very hungry. I began to think my parents were right. Maybe I was too young to travel on my own. Luckily, Alessandro was a mechanic. After an hour, he fixed the car and we started driving again.
It was nearly midnight when we arrived at the farmhouse. A man opened the door and smiled. "Come in," he said. "We have been waiting for you." I sat with a group of the friendliest people I've ever met and had a meal that was absolutely wonderful. And I'm glad to say that the rest of my trip runlet out to be exactly the same.
Which are the best cities to shop in? Writer Ellie Clare, has been to five cities around the world to find out. This week she writes about Paris.
I went to Paris in June. It's a lovely city for sightseeing at that time of year, but it's also a great place to find high-quality fashion. I started in the speciality stores and visited all the top names, including Cartier, Chanel and Christian Dior. I've never seen such beautiful things, but they are, of course, very expensive. I bought some perfume and moved on to the huge department stores in Paris. Two of the most famous are Primtemps and Galleries Lafayette and they are definitely Soot places to visit. One place I found disappointing was the Champ-Elysees, the most famous street in Paris. In the old days, it was a great place for fashion, but now there are too many fast-food restaurants, banks, airline offices, shopping centers and cinemas aimed at tourists. Don't waste your time there!
After the shops I tried the markets. One of the most famous places to find treasures in Paris is the flea market. There are three main flea markets—each selling an unbelievable range of old and second hand goods. They are located around the old gates to the city. I spent hours walking around these fascinating places and while I was there I discovered the meaning of the name "flea market". Hundreds of years ago, the royal family gave away their old clothes, which were then sold by people at these markets. But the clothes were full of little insects—fleas of course! One of the stall sellers told me that the best time to find treasures at the market was before the crowds arrived, usually between 5 a. m and 6 a. m. But that was a bit early for me. I was enjoying the Paris night life too much! There are also open-air markets all around the city where you can buy flowers, clothes, pets, food and many other things. And if you want to buy a book, visit the rows of bookstalls along the River Seine. You can find some great bargains there, or you can spend hours just looking.
If you want to buy half of Paris or if you just want to walk around and look, you'll love the experience. Paris is a great place to shop!
When children are fitted with problems, they may not be able to deal with them. Children need to learn how to solve problems. You can help them to learn it.
The best way is to take the time to talk about problems as they happen. Of course, this is not easy to do. Problems have a way of bursting upon (突然发生) someone at the worst time.
There are many things you can do to help children learn problem-solving skills. One good way is to find out what made the problem happen. This is a skill that children won't learn without help. You can show children what the problem is. Then it can be solved.
The next step for children is to learn how to solve the problem alone. This step takes courage. Some of them are so afraid of being wrong that they can't solve problems. You can help them by talking about some possible solutions. Then two of you can decide which solution is the best. Let the children try it out. Now the children will see that problems can be solved, and you can praise them for choosing a right solution.
Another step of problem-solving is to help children see the laws of cause and effect (因果规律) If a glass is knocked over, it will fall and break. If children like to write on the wall, his pencil always leaves a mark. Soon the children will see the link between cause and effect, and then they are on the road to growth.
The ability to solve problems is complex for children to learn. It is not easy for adults, either. It takes patience for adults, and it takes practice for children. But problem-solving can be taught. All you need is time and effort.
One of the most famous buildings in the United States is Carnegie Hall, the home of classical and popular music concerts in New York. Carnegie Hall is known not just for its beauty and history, but also for its amazing sound, it has been said that the hall itself is an instrument. It takes the music and makes it larger than life.
Carnegie Hall is named after Andrew Carnegie, who paid for its construction. He was a wealthy man who also gave a lot of money to schools and public libraries. Construction on Carnegie Hall began in 1890 and the official opening night was on May 5, 1891.
The hall was owned by the Carnegie family until 1924 when it was sold to Robert E. Simon. The building became very old and in 1960, the new owner made plans to destroy it and build an office block. Isaac Stem led a group of people who fought to save Carnegie Hall and finally, the city of New York bought it for ¥5 million. It was then fixed up between 1983 and 1995.
In 1986, people realized that Carnegie Hall had never kept proper records of its history. Advertisements and stories in newspapers about how Carnegie Hall needed help to recover its history led people to send in old concert programmes and information from all over the world. Over 12, 000 concert programmes were received and with these it was possible to make a proper record of Carnegie Hall's concert history.
Because the best and most famous musicians of all time have played at Carnegie Hall, it is the dream of most musicians who want to be great to play there. This has led to a very old joke which is now part of Carnegie Hall's history. Question: "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" Answer: "Practise, practise, practise."
a. Robert E. Simon bought it in 1924.
b. Carnegie Hall got its name.
c. Carnegie Hall recovered its history.
d. New York City paid ¥5, 000, 000 for it.
e. Construction on Carnegie Hall began in 1890.
GIY stands for "grow it yourself'. There is a new fashion for growing your own food. And there are a lot of reasons why growing your own food is a good idea.
GIY helps reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (排放物). Food in supermarkets travels a long way, which produces a lot of CO2. If you grow as many vegetables as you can at home, you can help save the earth.
GIY can be good for people's health. Compared with supermarket vegetables, vegetables you grow by yourself are better for your health. Because they have more nutrients (营养品) and they don't have chemicals.
GIY can also save your money and make you popular. First of all, seeds are much cheaper than vegetables. And secondly, you can save more by planting the most expensive and the most productive (多产的) vegetables. Thirdly, you can give your vegetables to friends and neighbors, which will make you very popular.
Don't worry if you don't have much space. To GIY, you don't even need a garden. You can use pots on your balconies (阳台). And don't worry if your space could get much sunshine. You can plant vegetables that don't need a lot of sunshine.
Grow your own vegetables now. You will have both a healthier body and a healthier social life.
