Do you know any 9-year-olds who have started their own museums? When Theodore Roosevelt was only nine and two of his cousins opened the "Roosevelt Museum of Natural History". The museum was in Theodore's bedroom. It had a total of 12 specimens(标本). On display were a few seashells, some dead insects and some birds' nests. Young Roosevelt took great pride in his small museum.
Born in New York in 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was not always healthy. "I was a sickly, delicate boy, "he once wrote. Roosevelt had a health condition called asthma (哮喘). He often found it hard to breathe. Instead of playing, he watched nature and then read and wrote about it.
Roosevelt's interest in nature sometimes got him into trouble. Once, his mother found several dead mice in the icebox. She ordered him to throw them out. This was indeed "a loss to science", Roosevelt said later.
Because Roosevelt was often sickly as a boy, his body was small and weak. When he was about 12, his father urged him to improve his body. Roosevelt began working out in a gym. He didn't become strong quickly. But he did decide to face life's challenges with a strong spirit. That determination stayed with Roosevelt's whole life. And finally his body did get strong. As an adult, he was an active, healthy person. He enjoyed adventures and loved outdoors.
In 1900, at the age of 41, Roosevelt was elected Vice President. A year later, President Mckinley was shot and killed. Roosevelt became the 26th president of the USA. At 42, he was the youngest leader the country had ever had.
On one evening 30 years from now, you might sit down to a table and get ready to have your dinner. What will you be eating? Will the food still be the same as it is now? Here are a few possible choices for the future.
Insects
Insects take up little space and don't make much waste. They also have more protein than beef, chicken and pork. This makes insects another possible food of the future. Most people probably won't want to see the insects they eat. So in the future, people will first turn insects into powder to make with other foods like chips and biscuits.
Vegetable meat
A new kind of burger(汉堡包)is now popular in the United States. It looks and tastes the same as any other burgers. But it's actually a "beef" burger made out of plants. People use peas and potatoes to make the "beef". They take coloring, protein and fats from these plants and mix them together.
Algae(藻类)
It is said that algae farming could become the world's biggest farming in the future. Algae is cheap and grows, very quickly. Also, it is very good for people. It has much more protein and oil than many other plants. People may also use algae oil and algae butter in the future. Some algae has a strong taste.
Manmade meat
Meat grown in labs might be another kind of future food. People use stem cells(干细胞) from animals to grow the meat. Chicken, beef, and pork can all be made this way. Manmade meat can be healthier than traditional meat. People can control what type of fat goes into the meat. They can choose only healthy fats.
One day, when I was a new student in high school, I saw a boy from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. He was carrying all his books. I thought to myself: "Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must really be a bookworm. "As I was walking, I saw some kids running toward him. They knocked all his books out of his arms and pushed him to the ground.
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw tears in his eyes. I felt sad and I went directly to him.
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are fools." He looked at me and said, "Thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. Then I invited him to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He agreed. We played together and had fun on that weekend. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. Over the next three years, Kyle and I became best friends.
When we were seniors, we began to think about college. We would go to different schools, but I knew we would always be friends.
As a top student, Kyle was invited to give a speech for graduation. He was nervous when he was about to speak on the stage. So I said, "Hey, you'll be great!" He looked at me and smiled.
Being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. "he said in his speech. He talked about meeting me and being best friends with me in the last four years. When he finished the story, he looked at me and gave me a little smile.
I saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same thankful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.
Never underestimate(低估)the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person s life, for better or for worse.
The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3, 000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world. The Silk Road covered almost 6, 500 kilometres. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.
Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices(香料), cloth, valuable stones and gold.
There is a famous old story along the old road. It is said that Roman soldiers travelled through central Asia. They started to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese village of Liqian. Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the story of blue-eyed villages of China was started.
During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from the Mediterranean, Persian, Magyar,
Armenian, Bactrian, Indian and Chinese areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.
In modern times, the old Silk Road routes are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35, 000 objects from all along the Silk Road. In this way, China protects the history of many countries and peoples.

During the trip, I(find) the Chinese people were friendlythe streets were safe. One place I visited was Huaqiangbei electronics market, where almost all kinds of electronics were available at reasonable prices. In the evening, I hung out with my friends in that area and had great fun speaking to folks from the US, Germany, Australia and other(country). We are all deeply(impress).
Although my trip was short, my visit to Shenzhen gave me a much(clear)picture of this city. I am looking forward to my next visit!
