    Blood Drive & Marrow(骨髓)Registration

“These patients deserve a chance at a normal happy future and they rely on the kindness of the strangers to make that happen.”

    — Daisy, Isabelle's Mother

Isabelle is the daughter of Daisy and Saman Mirzaei. In January 2014 Isabelle, 12-year-old, was diagnosed with a genetic blood disorder, beta thalassemia. Isabelle's body is unable to produce healthy red blood cells. As a result, Isabelle has been receiving blood transfusions (输血) every 4-6 weeks since she was 13 years old. A lifetime of regular transfusions can lead to serious medical problems. Her only chance at a normal, healthy life is to have a marrow transplant. Isabelle is only a child, so doctors have started a search for an unrelated marrow donor through The Match Registry. The Mirzaei family asks that you consider helping patients like Isabelle by registering to be a marrow donor and give the gift of life, the gift of blood.

“This way, everyone.” said the young Bahamian as he led the way to the boat. As the boat moved over the waves, I thought back eleven years to my first island visit via a cruise ship. As we landed, I noticed a sign advertising swimming with dolphins. I looked at my mother; she knew exactly what I wanted, but I was too young. “Maybe some other time,” she said. I think everyone knows that those four words usually translate to never. It made me, a little boy, depressed for many days. From that day on, it was my dream to swim with those gentle creatures.

Now, after 15 minutes of travelling, we reached the Sanctuary Bay. As we arrived, I saw the gray creatures showing off their unique talent before my eyes. We were led off the boat, past a back building. Our guide told us we would have the pleasure of spending the next 90 minutes with Kaholo, a young male, and Robola, the largest female, who is quite famous for having played the lead in the film Zeus and Roxanne.

My father and I were joined by four others and followed the man once more. He told us to jump into the water while he let the dolphins into that part of the bay. For the first 20 minutes, we could go anywhere and touch the dolphins as they swam by.

Kaholo and Robola must have known I was their biggest fan because they swam towards me as if I had had fish. After the introductory period, they jumped over our heads. I got a hug and kiss from Robola, and also learned how to have Kaholo talk to me.

This was by far the most magical experience of my life. Next time your parents say “Maybe some other day”, have faith in them. Your dreams are important to them too, and they will do whatever they can to make it possible, because dreams can come true.

    (1) What was the author's dream according to the text?
A . Travelling with his parents. B . Swimming with dolphins. C . Visiting the Sanctuary Bay. D . Watching a film played by dolphins.
    (2) How did the author feel after the first island visit?
    A . Excited. B . Puzzled. C . Unhappy. D . Energetic.
    (3) What did Kaholo and Robola do during the visit?
A . They stayed away from the author. B . They learnt to have a talk to the author. C . They had special interest in the author's fish. D . They showed a friendly attitude towards the author.
    (4) What's the best title for the text?
A . Dreams Do Come True B . Play with Dolphins C . My Parents' Promise D . The First Island Visit

It is widely acknowledged that it is by no means an easy task to bring up a child well. And our ancestors already understood it well. As an old proverb says, “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” That is being quoted more and more often these days. And I'm pleased about that.

Parents need to be involved in their children's education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft or coaching a child's sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child's education. And don't forget to communicate with teachers—they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together.

Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. There are other ways such as helping with homework. reading to a child, coaching a children's team, providing emotional support, helping solve problems and building self-esteem(自尊). Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.

Businesses can also help shape our children's future—invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, a teacher, a nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands.

It really does lake an entire village to raise a child. So share the responsibility-and the joy—of bringing a child to his or her full potential.

    (1) What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
A . Raising a child well needs various efforts. B . Communities play an important part in raising a child. C . Our ancestors raised a child by using the whole village's food. D . People in the same village should take care of a child together.
    (2) Which of the following has the author stressed in the text?
    A . Family education. B . School education. C . Life-long education. D . Karly childhood education.
    (3) The author thinks visiting the workplace can have an effect on children's         .
    A . talent B . health C . grades D . occupations
    (4) What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
A . To show his research on education. B . To call for more attention to children. C . To make examples of education reform. D . To introduce some ways to teach children well.

A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.

“It's extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components,” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing the components together. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.

They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, and then has to be matched well to everything it's connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.

Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”

    (1) What was the difficulty for engineers to make the robotic fly?
A . Lacking enough engineers. B . Lacking ready-made components. C . Starling to study the system too late. D . Having no way to fix components together.
    (2) What was the system of the robotic fly like?
A . It was huge but solid. B . It was small and changeable. C . It was complex but precise. D . It was fixed and traditional.
    (3) What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A . Engineers will fix the system on some animals. B . The system of the robotic fly will have a great effect on our daily life. C . The system of the robotic fly will face lots of scientific questions. D . Engineers will use the findings of the system to do further research.
    (4) What can we learn from the text?
A . Robert Wood did the research on his own. B . Wood will produce the system to put it onto the market. C . The robotic system can have some different functions. D . Engineers made the system in order to study power technologies.
