Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it improves with 1. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must take some action. You must first go where there are people. You won't make friends if you stay at home alone. Join a club or a group, for talking with those who 2 the same things as you do is easier. 3 join someone in some activities.
Many people are 4 when talking to new people. After all (毕竟), meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it's human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We 5 other people who are judging (评判) us finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don't forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself 6 you are, and you will feel more comfortable.
Try to be self-confident even if you don't feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look 7 at other people and smile. If you see someone you'd like to8 something to, don't wait for the other person to start a conversation.
Just meeting someone new doesn't mean that you'll make friends with that person. Friendship is9on mutual liking and "give and take". It 10 time and effort to develop.
When I was young, I liked to play jokes on people I knew, especially on my parents and friends. One day my mother was cooking and I was playing with my younger brother Tony. Suddenly I ran to my mother and said, "Tony fell from the open window!" She was very worried and ran out of the kitchen. Then I said, "Don't worry, I'm just joking." My mother shouted at me, "If you do it again, I'll hit you."
Another day I went swimming with my friends in the sea. I wanted to play a joke on them. In the beginning I swam fast and I called out “Help!”. All my friends came to help me. However, they found that I was joking. But half an hour later I wasn't joking. I was so fast, soon I got tired and couldn't swim on in water. I tried my best to call my friends for help, but this time nobody came to help me.
In the end they found I was telling the truth. They came and saved my life. They took me to the hospital. This is the best lesson in my life. From then on I haven't joked on anyone.
Dear Know,
I need some advice on how to make friends! I have just moved to a new city. I am 13. I don't know anybody here and I want to make some friends. What's the best way? Where can I meet people?
Yours,
Tony
Dear Tony,
There are lots of things you can do. First, you can ride your bike in your neighbourhood and try to find some kids. When you find some, you can go up and talk to them. You should also let your parents know that you want to make friends because they can help you. Maybe you can ask your parents to take you to the library or some places where there are lots of kids. You could try joining an art class or a sports club. These are all great ways to meet people. You can also try making friends at churches (教堂) if you go to churches on Sundays. Try to be active wherever you are, but just be yourself and don't try so hard. It takes time and patience. I hope you will find a best friend soon!
Yours,
Know
