The police have many ways of catching criminals. One way of catching them is by fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is the study of the patterns on our fingertips. We have known that no two fingerprints are exactly the same for hundreds of years. However, it wasn't until 1910 that the first criminal in the USA was convicted(被判有罪) using fingerprint evidence(证据).
Early on the morning of September 19,1910, Hiller's wife noticed that the light which they usually left on was off. When Hiller went to find out what was happening, he saw a stranger at the top of the stairs. The stranger had broken in and wanted to steal. Hiller and the stranger started to fight, but the stranger had a gun. He shot Hiller twice and ran away.
Hiller's wife ran to Hiller when she heard the gunshots but found him dead. So she called the police. Soon after, the police caught Thomas Jennings, not far from the Hillers' house.
The only problem was no one saw the criminal. However, the police had started using fingerprinting at that time. According to Hiller's wife, only several hours before Hiller's death, he had painted some wood near the kitchen window. Then the police checked the wood completely and found some fingerprints in the wet paint..
During the trial(审判), the police proved that the fingerprints belonged to Jennings, and he was convicted of Hiller' s murder(谋杀). Since then, fingerprinting has helped in the conviction of hundreds of thousands of criminals.
①The stranger shot Hiller twice and ran away.

①Which is more important in your mind, looking fashionable or feeling comfortable? You may find many people choose style over comfort and some even go to extremes(极端) to follow fashion. But we should remember: being fashionable isn't everything. It's more important to be healthy.
②Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So, they start extreme diets that are not good for their health. They might not eat meals or eat too little, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live?
③Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels. They might think high heels make them look taller. But, these shoes can actually hurt their feet and make it hard to walk comfortably, and they can increase the risks of falls. Some even wear tight clothes that influence blood circulation(循环), making it hard to breathe. Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health?
④Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair color. The material they use is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often or . at very high temperatures can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth it to risk our health, spending so much time and money?
⑤So, let's think again what's really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being? Clothes or hairstyles don't tell us anything about a person's character. Instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use that time to do fun things with friends. And instead of following extreme diets, let's eat properly and exercise regularly. Remember, the value of you is not. decided by your appearance, but by who you are as a person.
In the Chinese-speaking world, there are some things that everyone knows about and has in common. A good example of this is Jin Yong and his great works.
Jin Yong is the pen name of Cha Leung-yung. He was one of the most important and famous martial arts novelists(武侠小说家) in China. He passed away at 94 years old in Hong Kong. During his lifetime, Jin Yong wrote 15 martial arts novels. So far, more than 300 million copies of his books have been sold all over the world. It's just as the well-known saying goes,"Wherever there are Chinese, you will find Jin Yong's novels easily". His books have a great influence on Chinese, especially teenagers.
With his books, Jin Yong created an imaginary world called Jianghu. In Jianghu, fighting heroes practice martial arts hard, protect the weak bravely and build up good examples for the young. But Jin Yong also used some stories from history and traditional Chinese culture to make this amazing world. His stoểes took place in different dynasties. He used Chinese poems and legends in his books as well. This makes his books rich, colorful and attractive,
Jin Yong touched people's hearts through more than just his books. All of his novels have been made into movies, TV shows or video games. Most of them have been big hits. Lots of actors and actresses became famous because of his works.
Some students in China experienced the school life without any break. Some schools even gave up the midday playtime from the schedule(课程表). Why? This practice followed a common opinion. . However, these days more and more schools in China have extended the break time to 15 minutes and added playtime back into their schedules. On September 26th, Vice Minister of Education Wang Jiayi said that making the break 15 minutes(from 10 minutes) is very important.
Yes, give students a much-needed break. Every student needs time to' relax and have fun, even if some people think high school students are too old for the playground. School days are long and require lots of attention. Students should be given the chance to take a real break. After hours of sitting at a desk, they can use the break for physical activity. And it also can improve the ability to focus in class. Students at school with a real break say they return to class more relaxed and refreshed(活力满满的). Besides, they can use` the break to communicate with others.
Research on teens has shown that students benefit a lot from extracurricular(课外的) activities they enjoy, more sleep, more fun and more free time outside school.
So most schools have to start earlier or end later. That means students will have less of free time they want. That's not a great use of time. It's time for educational experts to think up some good ways to work it out.
A. Break is just a waste of time. B. However, adding break to the school day will take up teaching time. C. Physical activity can lower stress levels. D. Should students at school have longer break? E. Let students have time to do what they really like to do. |
Sarah often helped out at her dad's restaurant, but today felt different-she was given the job of serving customers. Excited, she carried a pork steak to Table 6. Her excitement quickly turned to anxiety(焦虑) when she saw Kassy, a popular girl from school, sitting there with her friends. Feeling shy and afraid, Sarah hid herself behind the front desk to avoid being seen by her classmates.
Thoughshe was an excellent student, Sarah often felt out of place among her wealthy classmates. She remembered how Kassy used to make fun of her and worried that others might do the same to her for working at a restaurant. When Sarah's dad found her hiding, she didn't know what to say. He suggested that she should take a break.
Turning back to the kitchen, Sarah felt bad for letting her dad down. To her surprise, Tina, one of Kassy's friends, came over and said that she knew how mean Kassy could be. She also praised Sarah for her hard work. Her comfort gave Sarah the strength she needed.
With confidence, Sarahreturned to the dining area and brought the check to Kassy's table. When Kassy tried to make fun of her, Sarah and Tina did a silly"crab dance" and laughed together. As she crossed the dining room, Sarah realized she didn't feel embarrassed. Whether Kassy liked her family's restaurant or not, it didn't matter.
As Sarah returned to the front desk, she felt a sense of pride, knowing the restaurant was special to her, no matter whatothers thought. She understood that hard work and kindness were what really mattered. From then on, she started to enjoy her new role with confidence and pride.
When you' re bored, you might watch short videos. You may think it is a good way to have fun. But according to new study, this will only make you feel more bored.
Last year, a team at the University of Toronto Scarborough in Canada (do) an experiment on this with 159 people. The experiment was like this. First, they asked people to watch a 10-minute online video. They can't skip(跳过) the videos or switch (切换) them. People had to watch it from the (begin) to the end. After that, they could choose from seven short videos by (they). Each video was five minutes, and people had 10 minutes to watch them. During watching them, they were free to skip through the videos or switch among them. After watching them, the scientists asked people they felt during the experiment. Something interesting happened. All of them enjoyed the first part more than the (two). Why is this? Boredom has something to do attention. The more we dive into(沉浸) a video, the (little) bored we will feel. When you pay more attention to(watch) a video, it is not easy for you to feel bored. So it is better for us to watch a video (careful) and not to skip or switch videos too quickly.
