Cats are the only animals that can climb high onto the old buildings in Rome by law(法律).
St. Petersburg, Russia(圣彼得堡, 俄罗斯)
Cats not only live an enjoyable life in the city, but they are also an important part of the city culture. The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg has one of the longest histories of looking after cats. The museum was once a palace(宫殿). It has had cats since the 18th century to catch mice. Kunqu Opera(昆曲) is one of the oldest operas in China. It has a long history of over 600 years and it is called the Mother of Chinese Operas.
At the end of the Yuan Dynasty (朝代), Gu Jian, an artist in Kunshan near Suzhou, worked together with other artists and they first created Kunshan qiang(昆腔). Then in the Ming Dynasty, Wei Liangfu, a great opera artist, improved it and a new kind of opera, Kunqu Opera, came out. After that, his student Liang Chenyu made more changes to it and wrote the first Kunqu play. Later, more and more artists started to write plays. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Kunqu Opera was quite popular in China. It was the second most popular opera( after Beijing Opera), because Beijing Opera was easier to learn.
Kunqu Opera has lots of wonderful plays. Many of them are still popular today, such as The Peony Pavilion(《牡丹亭》) by Tang Xianzu and The Peach Blossom Fan(《桃花扇》) by Kong Shangren. The Peony Pavilion is the best of all Kunqu plays. It tells the love story between Liu Mengmei and Du Liniang.
Because of the hard work by opera artists and the help from our country, Kunqu Opera is coming back to life.
