Do you know what Oxfam is? Where was it started? How many branches does it have now?
"Oxfam" is the short form for the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (全国饥荒救济委员会). It is an international organization to help the poor all over the world. It was started in 1942 in England during the Second World War to provide relief to war victims in Europe. When the war was over, Oxfam continued its work, sending materials and money to the poor throughout Europe. Since then, Oxfams have been founded in 12 countries, such as Oxfam America, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Hong Kong and so on.
Twenty-eight years later, a group of volunteers started Oxfam America. It was first in Washington, DC, then in 1973 Oxfam America moved to Boston. In England, Oxfam organizes many charity activities every year to raise money. It also runs many charity shops. The shops receive things donated by people and sell them to those who need them. The money from the sales will be used to help the homeless and the poor in different parts of the world.
Oxfam Hong Kong is a member of Oxfam International. Every year Oxfam Hong Kong organizes Trailwalker to collect money for the poor in Hong Kong and some other areas in the world.
I was now in my twenty-seventh year on the island. One evening Friday went out to look for food. But soon he was back, and he looked very afraid.
"Master! Master!" he cried, "There's a great ship near the island, and men are coming to the shore in a boat!"
I jumped up and ran with him down to the shore. I saw that it was an English ship! But why was it here? English ships never came this way. Perhaps they were pirates(海盗)!"Don't let them see you, Friday!" I called, "We'll hide in the trees and watch. "
There were eleven men in the boat, but three of them were prisoners(囚犯). Their arms were tied with rope, but their legs were free and they could walk. The other sailors pushed the three prisoners up the beach, laughing and shouting and hitting them. The three prisoners walked slowly along the beach and sat down under a tree, not far from us. They looked very unhappy.
Very quietly, I came up behind them through the trees, and called out to them in English.
"Don't be afraid, "I said. "I'm an Englishman. Perhaps I can help you. "
The three men turned and looked at me. They did not answer at once. They were too surprised.
Perhaps they thought I was a wild man myself, in my strange clothes made of animals' skins, and with my long hair and beard.
Then the oldest man spoke, "I am the captain of that ship, "he said, "and these two men are my first and second officers. Last night there was a mutiny (叛乱), and the seamen took the ship from me.
Now they're going to leave the three of us here, to die on this island. "
"Do these mutineers (叛军) have guns?"
"Only two, "he answered, "and they've left those on the boat. "
"All right, "I said. "We'll fight them. But if we get your ship back for you, you must take me back to England. "
Friday ran back to my house to get all the guns, and the captain and I made a plan.
a. The three prisoners sat under a tree on the beach.
b. The writer and Friday saw a ship coming to their island.
c. The writer managed to talk with the three prisoners.
d. The mutineers took the ship from the three prisoners.
A volunteer experience
It was March 2018. I was finishing high school. While I was looking forward to my college years, I also felt a strong desire to volunteer abroad. After weeks of serious consideration, I decided to have a gap year(间隔年).
I cannot tell you how many hours I spent trying to find the programme I was most interested in. I contacted many volunteer organizations. In the end, I signed up with " African Impact". I wanted to make an impact(影响)-no matter how small-on Africa and its people.
I took part in the Child Care Project. We worked in an orphanage (孤儿院) in Cape Town( 开普敦) and spent time with a group of orphans(孤儿) between the ages of 0 and 3. There was nothing as exciting as seeing a baby taking her first steps, hearing a two-year-old girl repeat all of the letters in the alphabet after I said them, seeing a little boy kick or catch balls of different sizes, and watching all of the kids carefully wash their hands as it became a habit. These were the skills that I watched the children develop during my time there. My heart was filled with pride.
I also took part in the Teaching Project and worked in a preschool. Teaching was more tiring. Some children were naughty. They didn't always listen to me. But it's hard to describe the joy I felt when the kids finally understood what I was trying to teach them.
Volunteering in Cape Town changed my life. It has changed who I am as a person. I cannot be more grateful for this amazing experience.
