It was a terribly rainy wet winter day. While I was walking from the library after getting my university applications (申请) for the next year at the end of my lunch break, a man was walking towards me with two huge boxes of brochures (小册子).
I thought, "What on earth is that man trying to do? Carry all those things?" Then all of a sudden he dropped them all! It was a terrible mess with hundreds of brochures all over the path in front of me! "Oh, no," I thought. The man sat down and started trying to pick all of the brochures up. I couldn't believe how many people passed by without even caring at all.
I thought, "I'm not going to be one of those people who don't care about this man. I'm going to help him." So, even though it was the end of my lunch break from work and I would be late if I stopped to help him, I didn't mind. If I explained what happened, I was sure my boss wouldn't mind too much. So, I helped him pick them all up. Then I asked if he would like a hand in carrying a box to where he went. He said yes gratefully.
I carried one of the heavy boxes. The box I had to carry was very heavy — as I'm quite a petite (娇小的) girl but I didn't complain. I just helped him with a big smile across my face. We got there and he thanked me very much for helping him out. He also gave me one of these lovely brochures about all the walks in and around the Bay of Plenty.
What is a better way to spend my lunchtime than helping someone? Luckily, I wasn't even that late back to work, so nobody minded at all!
Roughly the size of a soda can, sitting on a bookshelf, a relatively harmless device may be turning friends away from your home. The elephant in your living room is your Internet-connected camera, a device people are increasingly using for peace of mind in their homes. But few stop to think about the effect these devices may have on house guests. Should you tell your friends, for instance, that they're being recorded while you all watch the big game together?
"It's certainly new territory (领地), especially as home security cameras become easier to fix, " says Lizzie Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, America's distinguished manners advisors. "I think it will be very interesting to see what manners appear in terms of whether you tell people you have a camera or not, and whether guests have a right to ask that it be turned off, if it's not a security issue." Post wants to make clear that she's not talking about legal rights, but rather personal preference.
When it comes to security cameras, Post says it's a host's responsibility to make sure guests feel comfortable within their home. If the host casually acknowledges that there is a camera in the room by telling a story about it, that may be enough to provide an opening for a guest to say if they are uncomfortable.
However, if a contractor (合约工) is working in your home, you don't need to tell them that there are cameras watching. Then again, the camera can also work in contractors' favor. "If anything does go wrong while they're in the house, they don't want to be blamed for it," she says. "In fact, the camera could be the thing that proves that they didn't steal the $20, or knock the vase off the table."
With the help of the car manufacturer (汽车制造商) Hyundai, a 13-year-old girl was able to send a message to space, where her dad works on the International Space Station (ISS).
"He gets to live and work in space and he is doing lots of experiments up there. He has to stay there for long periods of time… I miss him when he is gone," Stephanie, who is from Houston, Texas, said in a video. "I think if we could write a really big message he would be able to see it from space. "
Hyundai took her wish to heart and decided to take on the challenge. Using Nevada's Delamar Dry Lake as a canvas (画布), 11 drivers drove Hyundai cars, spelling out "Steph♡s you" across 2. 14 square miles of desert. A promotional video, which Hyundai made to record the process, caught her father's response and showed the picture he took of her message from the ISS.
"I am happy that he could see it and knows that we are thinking about him back home," Stephanie said. "He has seen so many things up there, but I hope that this message was the most special. "
There are many misunderstandings about what can and cannot be seen from space. Contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall of China cannot be seen from space, but many seemingly less important things can be seen.
"A farmer from Louisiana could be burning wastes in his backyard, and it would make a big smoke trail that astronauts could see it from space," said Mike Gentry, a photo researcher for NASA's human-tended vehicles. And with a special camera, they can see the earth in great detail and even keep an eye on their favorite sports teams.
There was a story about a king.
One day, the king ordered some of his workers to dig a pond. Once the pond was dug, he made an announcement to his ministers, saying that one person from each family was required to bring a glass of milk during the night and pour it into the pond.
After receiving the order, everyone said "yes" and then went home. One of the ministers was preparing to take the milk during the night. Since everyone would bring milk, he would just take a glass of water instead and pour it into the pond. It would be so dark that no one else would discover it. So he quickly went out, poured the water into the pond and came back home, feeling rather satisfied with what he did. But much to their surprise, they saw the pond only filled with clear water! What had happened was that everyone was thinking just like the person: "I don't have to put milk into the pond, and someone else will do it." So when it comes to helping poor people, you shouldn't think that others will take care of it. If you don't do it, no one else will do it. Whatever you do, be true to your words, and that will make a big difference.
A. Rather, it starts with you.
B. All of a sudden, an idea occurred to him.
C. The king had never spent a sleepless night.
D. He couldn't wait to see what would happen.
E. So the pond would be full of milk by the morning.
F. He had his own way to find out whether his ministers were honest.
G. The next morning, the king came to visit the pond with his ministers.

I take the train to work every morning. There is rubbish thrown away everywhere in the railway station, terrible smell is more than I can put up with. So I always try to rush through it. The other day I was trying to do so as usual something made me stop for a moment. I saw the most beautiful act of old lady walking in front of me.
The old lady (support) by a white stick was walking slowly as each step took some effort. She stopped near a rubbish bin and slowly placed her walking stick against it. With great (difficult) she bent down, picked up some rubbish with her left hand and threw it inside the bin. all took her great effort.
I (move) to see this old woman make such a great effort to keep even a small part of it clean! I couldn't stop (think) about that all day.
I want to follow her example. I hope people will do the same as I do. If everyone makes contributions protecting the environment, there will be less pollution and the world will become (clean) and more beautiful.
It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.
Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters(怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.
There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精), or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.
"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.
"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her, "I said and knocked on the door.
Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"
