Michael Ha has a better understanding of the sentence "Where there is a will, there is a way." Now he is 22 years old and has become an example of young people because of his story of success.
Michael Ha was born in a very poor family. His parents worked in Vietnam before they moved to Britain in 1980.They couldn't find jobs in Britain because they spoke little English. The whole family had to live on benefits (救济金) and they lived in a small house in Hackney ,a poor area in East London. Growing up is not easy for Michael, but he never gave up.
At the age of ten, he set his heart on going to Cambridge University. It was not easy, either. Michael studied at a school, which used to be called "the worst school in Britain". However, young Michael made up his mind to try his best, no matter what kind of school he was studying at.
The smart boy studied very hard and did well in every subject at school. Once he made a bet(打赌) with his friend to learn further math. As a result, after just spending four months teaching himself from a textbook, he got an A in further math.
Now Michael is the star medical student in John's College, Cambridge and has just won an award for his excellent grades. He hopes he will be an example for other young people from poor family.
Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell—a signal causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.
Communication, of course, doesn't need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar for honey. So why shouldn't trees have ways of sending message?
By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it's not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. "There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better," says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University. "For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful."
A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people's health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.
What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.
We spend so much time waiting to be loved, hoping love will find us, and looking for that special love. Unfortunately, that's not usually how life works. To be loved, you should love and respect yourself as much as you do others. In order to love someone, you should love yourself.
•Stop comparing (比较) yourself to others. We all have different gifts. When you compare yourself to others for what they have, whether it is a car, a house, or a job, it makes you feel bad about yourself. Really be grateful about everything you have. Gratitude keeps your heart open to love.
•Practice receiving love. To truly love is to be able to receive it. When someone loves you, does some kind deeds to you, or says kind words, accept it. Know that you are worthy of love. It is important to accept a gift of love by others. You give yourself a chance to learn more about yourself that you are lovable.
• Write about your experiences, good and bad. When you write down good experiences, allow yourself to feel those feelings. When you remember bad experiences, allow yourself to feel self-compassion. Compassion is not self-pity, but rather willingness to accept one's own pain and regret.
•Stop trying to be perfect. Stop blaming (责备) yourself for being less than perfect. Just follow all the steps above and don't let anyone's expectations of you put any pressure on you.
A. Do not feel sorry about it.
B. Everyone on the earth is unique (独一无二的).
C. Allow yourself to feel the love that has come your way.
D. Appreciate yourself.
E. Keep a diary.
F. Always do your best, but not reaching perfection is NOT failure.
G. You give someone a joy of giving by loving you.
Dad was not only my best friend, but my compass (指南针). While he was alive, he1 me with his actions and advice. He taught me one important 2: "Believe in yourself."
If there was one phrase my dad 3 liked to hear, it was "I can't." He never got to finish high school and 4 two jobs to support his large family, 5 he never complained. Through education and years of hard work, my dad became an excellent journalist.
When I was in high school, I had a 6 time with math. He tried to help me, but I 7 struggled. So my math teacher suggested I meet with him at 7:00 each morning before school for 8 help. I told Dad, "That's 9! I'm tired! I can't do that!" He replied, "You're doing it. I'll send you to school." Every morning at 6:45, we'd leave the 10. Despite (尽管) working 12 hours every day, Dad never once 11 driving me to school.
After months of 12, I was facing the final exam. I was so 13. On the day of the final, my dad hugged me and said, "Luke, 14 yourself. You can do it." His words made me realize I needed to trust in my 15 and in the hours of work I'd 16. When I got my 17 proudly, the first person I called was my father. He cried, "Yes! You deserved it!"
Even now, whenever I 18 that a task is too much for me, I think back to that exam. No matter how 19something is, if you're willing to work, you can succeed. I'm forever 20 to Dad for that lesson.
"Ding..."the alarm went off, John yawnedturned around, considering: "Sleep one more minute, one minute does no harm."
One minute(late), John got up, washed his face quickly and went to school in a hurry. While(reach) the crossroads, John saw the green light flash., the light turned red before he could put his feet on the zebra line. "Oh, if only I could be a minute earlier." he sighed.
After several minutes'(wait), John finally went across the road. Then when he was rushing towards the coming bus, he pitifully saw the bus leaving in front of(he) eyes. John sighed again: "If only I could be a minute earlier."
John waited and waited, but without luck, no buses showed up again. Finally, he decided (walk) to school.
Unfortunately, the class had begun when he(reach) the classroom. John lowed his head and went to his seata red face. Pointing to her watch, Miss Li said: "John, you are twenty minutes late today." John felt(terrible) regretful.

I was sitting at my favorite table in a restaurant last Sunday and wait for the food I had ordered to arrive. I suddenly found that Lin Ling, one of my classmate, worked like a waitress there. Honest speaking, it was great surprise for me to find her working there. As far as I know, she's from a richer family. What was it that made her to work there? I walked up to her and asked her the reason. When asking, she said, "I just want to earn some pocket money so that we can help some children in poor areas go back to school." How a good girl! I should learn from her.
