Slightly larger than the North Island, and much less populated, the South Island of New Zealand is well known for its fantastic scenery and wide range of outdoor activities. Among the many places you could visit, here are some of the best known.

        Marlborough Wine Region

The largest wine area in New Zealand(producing more than half of New Zealand's wine), Marlborough is home to New Zealand's most famous wine, made from the sauvignon blanc(长相思) grapes. Take a car and spend a few days visiting some of Marlborough's wineries(酿酒厂). Most have wines available for tasting and a number of them also have their own restaurant or cafe, where you can enjoy the wine alongside.

        Kaikoura

The charming background of Kaikoura is the snow-capped mountain range which seems to come all the way down to the sea. Among the many activities here—fishing, hiking, kayaking(划独木舟) and even bird watching—the one not to miss is a boat trip on the bay to see the whales. Kaikoura is in fact one of the best places in the world for whale watching.

        Queenstown

On any list of places to visit in New Zealand, Queenstown should be at the top. This alpine(高山的) town has things to do for all seasons, and impressive scenery that is among the country's very finest. Located on the shores of Lake Whakatipu, there is a full range of water as well as land-based activities. In the winter Queenstown is the place for the best skiing in New Zealand.

        Milford Sound

Mitre Peak is a mountain which seems to rise out of the waters of Milford Sound and is one of the most photographed and recognisable New Zealand sights. Milford Sound lies in the southwest corner of the South Island. The water is surrounded on either side by rock faces that rise at least 1, 200 meters (3, 900 feet) and after rain hundreds of waterfalls appear, some up to a thousand meters long.

It is no wonder that Milford Sound was described by Rudyard Kipling as the "Eighth Wonder of the World".

    (1) What do we know about Marlborough Wine Region according to the text?
A . Its wine has a good reputation. B . It's the world's largest wine area. C . Visitors have to pay to taste the wines there. D . The restaurants there offer food of various styles.
    (2) What's the most unusual activity in Kaikoura?
    A . Hiking. B . Fishing. C . Bird watching. D . Whale watching.
    (3) If you are interested in skiing in the winter, you can go to          .
    A . Marlborough Wine Region B . Milford Sound C . Queenstown D . Kaikoura

Is there a way to turn back the aging process in people? For centuries, people have been looking for a "fountain of youth". The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink its water, you will not age.

Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears that the answer may be called the hypothalamus(下丘脑), which is part of your brain. It controls important body activities, including growth, the way we process food and so on.

Researchers at New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that hypothalamus neural stem cells(干细胞) also influence how fast aging takes place.

Dongsheng Cai, a professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, was the leading researcher in a study on aging in mice. He and his team reported their findings.

"Aging speed can be controlled by a particular place in the body, which is the hypothalamus. And it can be controlled by a particular type of cells, which are hypothalamus stem cells. "He added that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body. So when hypothalamus function is in decline, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost, it eventually leads to aging.

Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate the hypothalamus in laboratory mice. They did this by injecting the animals with stem cells.

The researchers said the results showed that the treatment slowed aging in the animals. "When we injected the hypothalamus stem cells to the middle-aged mice, the mice aged slowly and they can also live longer."

But these results were just from studying mice in a laboratory. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in human beings.

"If we can translate what we have seen in animals to humans, I think humans can function better during later ages." Cai and his team say their study may have other benefits. They say the findings could lead to new ways to help doctors identify and treat any number of age-related health issues.

    (1) Why does the author mention the "fountain of youth" in the first paragraph?
A . To explain what the "fountain of youth" is. B . To introduce the hypothalamus. C . To show how to find the "fountain of youth". D . To help people find the "fountain of youth".
    (2) What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A . The brain. B . The aging process. C . Hypothalamus. D . The stem cell.
    (3) What do we know about the study done by Cai?
A . They have found a way to turn back the aging process. B . The brain controls growth, reproduction and the way we process food. C . The decrease of hypothalamus stem cells can lead to aging. D . The findings have been applied to human beings.
    (4) Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A . The Fountain of Youth B . A New Discovery About Aging C . The Ways of Slowing Down Aging D . Hypothalamus—the Fountain of Youth

Squatting down on my disorganized closet floor, I looked eagerly through my albums for the picture of my grandma's Christmas lights. I searched so long and so eagerly that I lost all feeling in the legs. Ignoring the pain, I went on with my search, because finding the picture was worth it.

My beloved grandma on my dad's side, who passed away almost four years ago, would decorate the Christmas trees like it was her job. Each year she would decorate an ornate, 12-foot-tall, shining tree in her living room, and most years she would have an additional pink tree, palm tree, coloured-light tree, white-light tree, bedroom tree, etc. The ideas varied year after year, but the theme was always the same:Let There Be Light.

For the outside of the house, my grandma hired people to come and string thousands of lights through the trees in her yard. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't cheap, but it was a labour of love. People in the small town came and parked their kid-packed cars on the street, gazing at the thousands upon thousands of shining lights year after year. They brought us magic, which was grandma's legacy. That is the family act I am supposed to follow for the rest of my life. It's what I'm dying to recreate and pass on to my own kids. I feel so much pressure because no one is capable of doing it—and of doing it correctly—but me.

So, it's me and only me, each year unfastening countless strings of lights, winding them round a 10-foot, prickly tree, and sending the lights to the highest branches. Though I'm only ever just scratching the surface of grandma's magic, I uncover a little more each year. I still haven't found that picture of my grandma's Christmas lights, but I know it exists, and I will find it, even if it means losing all feeling in my legs.

    (1) Why did the author suffer from pain?
A . She was missing her beloved grandma. B . She had trouble finding grandma's lights. C . She kept an uncomfortable gesture for long. D . She broke her legs while searching for something.
    (2) What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A . Grandma's Christmas trees. B . The atmosphere of Christmas. C . The beauty of Christmas trees. D . Christmas memories in childhood.
    (3) Which of the following best describes grandma's yard on Christmas?
A . Colourful and messy. B . Interesting and dizzy. C . Noisy and crowded. D . Shiny and attractive.
    (4) What's the author's attitude toward her grandma's way to spend Christmas?
A . It is the best way people like. B . It is her duty to pass it on. C . It needs to be improved. D . It is too costly to do it.

A funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolution: we stopped talking to one another.

I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and…I became invisible, absent from the conversation. The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction(互动). With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mum has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.

As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated(自动化), the alienation index(疏远指数) goes up. You can't even call a person to get the phone number of another person any more. Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.

I am not against modern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice mail system, and an email account. Giving them up isn't wise…they're a great help to us. It's some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.

More and more. I find myself hiding behind email to do a job meant for conversation. Or being relieved that voice mail picked up because I didn't really have time to talk. The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier…or at least facilitating my antisocial instincts.

So I've put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging with people who live near me, no cell phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I'm at home.

    (1) Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A . The Advance of Communications Technology B . The Consequences of Modern Technology C . The Story of Communications Revolution D . The Automation of Modern Communications
    (2) The sentence "Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent." means that          .
A . the people sitting beside you have to go away to receive a phone call B . you can hardly get in touch with the people sitting beside you C . modern technology makes it hard for people to have a face-to-face talk D . people can now go to work without going to the office
    (3) The writer feels that the use of modern communications is          .
    A . satisfying B . encouraging C . disappointing D . embarrassing
    (4) The passage implies that          .
A . modern technology is bridging the gap between people B . modern technology is separating the people C . modern technology is developing too fast D . modern technology is interrupting our communication
