A young man once went into town and bought himself a pair of trousers. When he got home, he went upstairs to his bedroom and put them on. He found that they were about two inches too long.
He went downstairs to the kitchen. His mother and two sisters were washing up the tea-things there. "The new trousers are too long, "he said. "They need shortening by about two inches. Could one of you do it for me, please? "His mother and sisters were busy and none of them said anything.
But as soon as his mother had finished washing up, she went quietly upstairs to her son's bedroom and shortened the trousers by two inches. She came downstairs without saying anything to her daughters.
Later on, after supper, the elder sister remembered her brother's trousers. She was a kind-hearted girl, so she went quietly upstairs without saying anything to anyone, and shortened the trousers by two inches.
The younger sister went to the cinema, but when she came home, she also remembered her brother's trousers. So she ran upstairs and did as her mother and elder sister had done.
You can imagine the look on the young man's face when he put the trousers on the next morning.
Once there was a boy who was afraid of the dark. He thought that when it was dark his bedroom was full of monsters. But there came a time when he was too old to be allowed to keep sleeping with the light on.
The first night he was so frightened that he couldn't fall asleep because he kept thinking about the monsters in his room. So he got up and went over to his wardrobe to get a torch. But when he opened the wardrobe door he came face to face with a monster, and he let out the loudest scream(尖叫)in the world.
However, the monster didn't jump out to eat him as the boy had always imagined. To the boy's surprise, the monster took a few steps backward, grabbed(抓挠)its hair and started crying! The monster cried for so long that the boy's shock and fear slowly went away. He calmed the monster down as much as he could, and started talking to him, asking him why he was crying and what he was doing there.
The monster told him he lived in the wardrobe, but almost never went out, because he was afraid of the boy. When the boy asked him why, the monster told him the boy's face with two eyes, ears and a nose seemed to him the strangest thing he'd ever seen. The boy felt exactly the same way about the monster who had a huge head with many mouths and a lot of hair.
The two of them talked so much that they became quite friendly, and they realized that both of them had bee afraid of the same thing:t he unknown. To lose their fear, they had to get to know each other.
One Saturday, I got a phone call about electrical problem. Since I am not an electrician, I quickly realized that the woman on the line had the wrong number. The woman on the phone sounded extremely anxiious(焦虑的)as her electricity wasn't working. Her husband tried to replace a wall switch(开关), but now some of their lights wouldn't be on, and the heat had shut off.
The woman thought she was calling an electrician who had done work for her in the past. I had just recently changed my 1 and she got me instead. I'm not an electrician but I do work with electricity.
I informed her that she had the wrong number, and I didn't know what her old electrician changed his number to. She apologized and we 2 goodbye. After I hung up the phone I thought I could help her so I dialed back and found out she was iust. one town over.
When I got to her house, I told her I would help her, but l wouldn't accept any money. This confused(使迷惑)her and she asked why I would bother if I wasn't getting paid. I told her it was an act of 3 and to "pay it forward". The couple, who were both retired, said they had never met anyone like me before.
Her husband had installed the 4 switch which was causing a short(短路), After I was done, they thanked me and tried to give me some money. I told them I wouldn't accept anything, and that the best payment would be to find someone else to help out. I also said that if they can't find someone else to repay then just he extra nice to each other. They were both unbelievably happy that I managed to solve their electrical problems quickly, but I think I was even 5 at the opportunity to help them.
You live in a house made of sweets; you are walking in the clouds; you don't have to go to school tomorrow. How could all of these a things happen? In your dreams.
A dream is quite a lot of pictures ideas and fellings playing in the mind during sleep. Humans spend one third of life sleeping and six years dreaming. A person usually has three to five dreams a night, a one may not remember his or her dreams.
Many dreams, at least the ones we remember, are strange and interesting. That's why most people believe that dreams must have some deep meanings or important m . But people in different cultures have different understandings of the same dream. For example, when dreaming of fire, Chinese people think of money, Japanese may say it is "trouble". For people in the West, a dream of fire means something new is coming.
Scientists have very different opinions about the deep meaning of dreams. Some believe that a dream is only an ordinary part of sleep and doesn't tell us anything. Other scientists think that dreams directly show what people think of these days. Dreams are like a window into one's wish and fears. For example, if you are very nervous about an exam, you may see someone strange r after you in your dream.
Technology also helps us to know more about dreams. In some films, people can enter others' minds while they are dreaming. Well now, out of the dreams, we can really do it, too. Scientists can now r people's dream by scanning(扫描)their brain activity during sleep. Would you let scientists look into your dreams?
The villas(别墅)were very nice. Beautiful houses, wonderful lawns, and nice gardens. This was the kind of housing estate where John Wood preferred to work.
It was just before eleven o'clock at night. After John drove around for the fifth time, he thought that he had found the right house-No. 4. There was no light and the garage(车库)door was open. John parked his car in the next street and then came into the garage.
No one would think that a well-dressed gentleman with a white silk scarf and gloves, was really an excellent thief.
After looking around the house for a while, John got down to work. He searched every room, and before long, his hands were full. He had two necklaces, some gold rings and a purse with a lot of money. He put all the things in his pocket.
Then he found a small wall safe(保险箱)in the bedroom. John couldn't wait to take the valuable things from the safe and put them into his own pocket! But the thief met a problem; he couldn't open the safe.
John wiped a few drops of sweat from his forehead, took off his gloves, and placed them on a chair. Again and again, and finally, he opened the safe. He saw something shining-a huge diamond.
Suddenly, John heard someone opening the front door. It was the owner of the house. John put the diamond in his pocket, ran to the window, climbed out of the house and drove away in the dark.
Ten minutes later, the police arrived. After searching the house. the police found an important piece of evidence(证据)that could easily tell who was the thief.
Do you know what the piece of evidence was?
