Uthman Affan was a very rich man who was known for his generosity. In fact he was so generous that people still tell stories about him today, more than a thousand years later.
Uthman lived in Medina. It is a very dry part of the world where there isn't a lot of rainfall. One year, the rain didn't come and there was a drought(干旱). People were running out of food. Things got so bad that the people had to eat leaves from the trees in order to survive.
You can imagine how happy the people and the merchants(商人)were when they learned that a group of camels(骆驼)were approaching Medina. Each camel carried a lot of food, and the people looked forward to being able to eat good food again. Knowing that the group belonged to Uthman made the people even happier, for they knew he is well-known for generosity. But it was not welcome news for the merchants in Medina, because Uthman was a very sharp businessman. Although he was fair, Uthman drove a very hard bargain.
Even so, the merchants immediately went to Uthman. They wanted to buy the food on the camels from him so they could sell it for two or even three times its usual price at that time. So they were ready to pay any price Uthman asked. But Uthman turned them down. The merchants raised their offers again and again, but each time Uthman refused. Finally the merchants made their best offer: five times the value of the food. Guess what? Uthman had made a decision to give away all the food to the starving people of Medina.
One Moore Elementary school teacher is showing students the importance of communication through “shout-outs”. Third Grade Moore Elementary teacher Lindsey Winders said a shout-out is a compliment(称赞)that students can say or write down. “Like, 'hey I noticed you doing a really great job solving your math facts yesterday. I wanted to make sure you know that I saw you do that,” Winders said.
Winders said she makes sure she is giving shout-outs to her students every day. “I might write them a sticky note, or write them a quick little note in their plans. I might just say it to them on their way into the classroom or on their way out of the classroom, but most importantly I try to do it every day,” Winders said.
In addition to the compliments, Winders has the students greet each other every morning during morning meeting. She will have students give examples to the class of how to communicate in different settings. Third grade student Nayelli Moranchel said she has given at least six shout outs this year. “It makes me happy, because they always write something back,” Moranchel said.
Recently, Winders took it one step further and wrote a personalized note on each of her students' desk. “In our classroom, sometimes it can be challenging for me to give a compliment or a shout out to each and every one of them in a way that feels equal and valuable at the same time. So I thought what's a better way to be able to do that than leaving a note on their desk that can stay for as long as they want it.” Winders said.
Winders said it is encouraging when she sees her students copy the act, and give each other compliments without her guidance.
After opening the world's first commercial Direct Air Capture plant(直接空气捕集工厂)designed to pull CO2 out of the air, Swiss company Climeworks is now trying to create the world's first “negative emission(负排放)” power plant.
An international team of scientists has been working on a way to turn captured CO2 into minerals. The project is called CarFix. Experts capture the gas, put it into water and send it to more than 700 meters underground. There the CO2 on contact with a special kind of rock forms into a mineral.
“Our results show that between 95 and 98 percent of the CO2, sent underground was mineralized over the period of less than two years, which is amazingly fast,” says lead author of the CarFix project, Dr. Juerg Matter. Before this discovery it was thought that this mineralization could take hundreds to thousands of years.
The DAC technology can collect CO2 from the atmosphere and then store it underground or sell it to business needing the gas. For example, customers can use it in drinks. And the first plant in Zurich is supplying the captured CO2 to a nearby greenhouse to “feed” vegetables. By using the company's CO2 the customers can reduce their carbon mission as well as lower their dependence on energy.
A 2015 study suggested that before the CarFix project, experts could collect CO2, but they didn't have a large-scale(大规模的)method to safely treat it.
Combining Climeworks' DAC technology with the CarFix mineralization process they will be able to create a system. This system doesn't put additional carbon back into the atmosphere. Actually it is carbon negative.
“The economic cost of applying this kind of carbon capture technology on a large-scale is not particularly practical now, but for the first time we are seeing a realistic and effective system,” says Christoph Gebald CEO of Climeworks.
More than 40 million Americans move each year, but not always by choice. Whether you're moving because of work or schooling or for better chances, adjusting to(适应)the life in a new place can be difficult. Here are some tips to help you adjust to your new home.

You may discover a talent or interest you never knew you had.
Get involved with(融入)your neighbors
Introduce yourself to neighbors and everyone else you meet. This is the best way to get advice about living in your area, and to make new friends. Attend local events that interest you, visit the markets or yard sales, take classes and so on. All of these things will help you meet people come and feel connected.
It takes time to get to know a new place, so don't expect to feel comfortable right away. To help make the process easier you can meet new people, find a support group near you. A fresh move is also a fresh start. It is therefore a great time to start fulfilling a dream you've had, whether it is going back to school, starting a new career, or finishing a novel.

In December 2016, Jordan Kahana was driving along a highway in Arizona when he 1 two small dogs on the side of the road. The puppies were eight weeks old. Kahana was on his 2 to Colorado to celebrate the beginning of the New Year with friends, but he stopped and rushed the 3 abandoned(被抛弃的)dogs to the animal hospital. After that, Kahana decided to 4 them.
Kahana 5 his job as a digital director in 2017 to travel more. 6 he rescued the pups he was planning on 7 full time. He had bought a one-way ticket to Bali in November, to leave that upcoming March. After rescuing the pups, however, his plans took a bit of a 8. But still, the 9 was to travel. So 10 flying for international adventures, he decided road trips would be their thing!
11 then, the 30-year-old man has traveled about 32,000 miles with the two 12pups, who he named Sedona and Zeus. So far, the three have been to 35 states together and hiked through 13 national parks. They've even visited Canada. Kahana posts his travels on his 14 Instagram account viewed by hundreds of thousands.
When asked how he 15 Sedona's and Zeus' names, Kahana said that he first found the dogs when he was 16 from Sedona, Arizona to Page, Arizona. He thought Sedona was a 17 name for the female puppy and Zeus, which sounds a good name for a 18 dog, was taken from Greek Mythology.
“I was 19 forced to become a morning person,” Kahana said. “The pups, without 20, wake me up around 6:30 in the morning to go out for a walk.”
Music is in the corners of everyday life. It is said to be beneficial to us both (physical) and mentally.
There are many ways to make music. For example, if you blow into bamboos or shells, (permit) air to come in, they can produce pleasant music. A recent discovery suggests that music was played much earlier than we think. In 1995, deep in cave in Slovenia was occupied 45,000 years ago by Neanderthals, a leg bone of a bear with four finger holes was found. The discovery suggested that flutes(笛子)had come into (exist) at that time. Later, many other (tradition) musical instruments like drums were dug out from underground. Ancient people even (seek) a way to make music out of a bow that (intend) for hunting, so we have to admit that they did have a great gift music. But if exactly dated, the Neanderthal flute is by far the (early) known example of music.
Now music can be found in every known culture, and even the most distant groups have a certain form of music.

I used to be very close to my father when I was a child. Whenever I quarrel with my mother, I would turn to my father for comfort. As I got old, the gap between us began to grow, that made it hard for me to start a conversation with him. She had done so much for me but I always took for granted. A week ago, my dad gave me the ride home on his bike. I was so tiring that I fell to asleep against his back. Later my mother told me Dad was happy that we had not been so close for a long time. That day, I hugged Dad thankful with tears in my eyes.
