Four years ago when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It was a Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my 10-month-old sister home alone. Anyway, my sister was still asleep in her room. In fact I had the house to myself. I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Nothing was on TV, so I felt bored and touched the candles on the shelf…I had an idea! What would happen if I set fire to some kitchen paper? Well, of course it went on fire, but it wasn't the tiny flame(火苗) I'd expected, and I couldn't blow it out. I threw it on the floor, and then I got my dad's boots(靴子) and stamped it out.

But there was a huge hole left on the floor. When my mum came home later, she smelt the smoke immediately. She dropped the shopping bag, luckily for me, over the hole. I thought this meant she would never see it. However, after running round the house checking for a fire, she of course picked up the bag and saw the hole. Next I was grounded(关禁闭)  for months. Even worse though, the hole was still there, reminding me of what I did.

The village of Hengly was going to have the Bean Olympics. It was a competition to see which kind of bean would grow the fastest and tallest.Everybody was excited. They couldn't waited to show their best plants.

Cassie knew clearly which bean she would choose for the competition, for her family had planted a special “family bean.”It was a flat bean that her greatgrandparents had brought from Sicily. Her grandmother planted the beans every year and served them at many meals.Cassie was sure they would be unbeatable beans.

However, the plan did not work out that way.Although Cassie's bean plants looked healthy with beautiful purple flowers, they did not grow as fast or climb as high as any of her neighbors'.These people chose beans from seed(种子)stores.Their beans had wonderful names like “Rocket” or “Top Crop.”One type was even named “King's Bean.”That was the bean Ivan planted, and his plants climbed almost to the top of the fence.Cassie's plants were just near the middle of the fence.

On the day of the competition,Cassie was disappointed that her beans were in last place.Ivan laughed at hr beans and said she could win a prize for the slowest, shortest beans.

The organizer,Mr.Williams, handed out medals for the fastest-growing and the tallest beans plants.“Now there remains only one final test, and it is just as important:the taste test.”

Mr.Williams cooked the beans from each competitor and chose five experienced villagers as judges(裁判).

Cassie was nervous.Would her family beans lose another time?

After the judges tasted the beans,Mr.Williams counted the results.“We have a winner,” Mr.Williams announced.“The judges all agree that Cassie's beans are the winner.”

Cassie grinned at this unexpected result. Many of her neighbors, even Ivan asked for her seeds. They were all in favor of the good-tasting beans even though they didn't grow fast or very tall.

John and Bobby joined the same company together just after they completed their university studies the same year. Both of them worked very hard. Several years later, however, the boss promoted(提拔) Bobby to manager but John was still a worker. John could not take it, and gave his resignation(辞呈) to the boss. He complained that the boss did not think much of those who were hard- working, but promoted only those who flattered(奉承) him.

The boss knew that John had worked very hard for the years. He thought a moment and said," Thank you for what you said, but I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave."

John agreed the boss asked him to go and find anyone selling watermelons in the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found a man selling watermelons. The boss asked how much they cost every kilogram. John shook his head and went back to the seller to ask and returned to tell the boss $1.2 every kilogram,

The boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone selling watermelons in the market. Bobby went and returned, saying. Boss, only one person is selling watermelons. $1.2 every kilogram, and $10 for 10 kilograms. The seller has 340 melons. On the table there are 58 melons, and every melon weighs about 2 kilograms. They were brought from the South two days ago. They are of good quality.

Hearing what Bobby said, John realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided to stay and learn from Bobby.
