Once there was a king. He was wise but everyone was afraid of him. His face showed the sadness deep in his heart. So there were deep 1 lines（皱纹）on his face.

    In his country lived a beautiful girl. Everyone seemed to love her, so did the king.He wanted to 2her, and finally he decided to speak to her of his love. After he dressed in his best clothes, he looked in the 3, but he saw a hard face, 4when he tried to smile.

    "How about wearing a mask（面具）?" he thought. Then he ordered his magician topaint a mask that looked kind and happy and handsome. The magician 5and said: "But you must keep your own face in the same lines that I paint and be kind to all people from your heart. If not, the mask will break." The mask looked so6that no one knew it was not the true face of the king. Months passed, the beautiful lady got married to the king, and the king treated everyone 7to keep the mask from breaking.

    At last, the king didn't want to cheat his beautiful wife any more. 8 he asked the magician to take the mask off. Surprisingly, he found his face was just like the mask he had worn for so long!

    This story tells us that a man is what he is in his heart.

    A few years ago, I worked a 12-hour night shift(夜班) and got home from work.

    I was on my way back home and was very tired. I 1 at a restaurant to have breakfast. Right after I placed my order, I saw a man come in. He was carrying a small backpack and looked like he had seen better times. He reached in his pocket and pulled out some2 . He asked the waitress if 38 cents was 3 to buy a cup of coffee. She looked at his backpack and said, “ 4. Have a seat.” (Coffee was 50 cents a cup at the time.) It really touched me how she had tried to protect his pride and how he hadn't asked for any charity.

    Shortly before my 5 came, I asked the waitress to come over. I said, “You know, I am not feeling well. I don't think I am going to be able to eat my breakfast. Do you think there is6 here who might eat it?” She first asked if I was OK and then she 7. She said, “I think so. Are you sure?” I told her that I was sure.

    She then walked over to the gentleman and told him that I had ordered food and it was too8 to stop the order but I didn't feel like eating. Would he be so kind as to take it 9they wouldn't have to throw it away? I had walked to the cash register(收银台) and was paying for the meal. At the cash register, I asked if they had gift cards. They did. I bought one 10 $25.00 and asked them to give it to the gentleman after I left.

    The first day of university our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a 1_ hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled（有皱纹的）, little old lady with a smile. She 2_ a minute and said, “Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a big one.

    We became immediate friends. Every day for the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I always loved listening to this ‘time machine'3 she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of this year Rose became a campus role model and she 4_ made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she loved the attention from the other students.

    At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football club. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the platform. As she began to deliver he prepared speech, she dropped her cards on the floor. A little upset she simply said, “I'm sorry I'm so nervous. I 5 beer for Lent（大裔节）and this wine is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order …” As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; wo grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge6 between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older, but it does take talents and abilities to grow up…”

    One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. However, these words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE.

    Last Friday, I was just in France to visit my 96-year-old grandmother who is very dear to me 1lives alone. I don't visit her very often, so every time I go to see her, 2of us think that it might be the3time we see each other. Last time I visited her in December of 2014, I did some video interviews about her life. I asked her 4 it was like to grow up with her father in the 1920s, to live with two young children, with her husband 5 in a prisoner's camp (集中营) in Germany. I also asked her about her greatest 6. I learned a lot of amazing new things about her that I never know before.

    This year, I did not really have questions to ask. I only wanted to tell her how loved she is. So, I cooked for her and read stories. I gave her a foot massage (按摩). 7 leaving, I wanted to leave something 8 behind besides the memory of our time together. So I wrote her five different love and thank notes to let her know how much she means to me. I 9 them in different places where I knew she would 10find them. One of them was under her pillow. 11 one was hanging from the lamp shade by which she reads in the evening. Another one was by her toothbrush. One was in her mailbox which she has to check every day. And the last one was in her car. She still 12to the nearby village a couple of times a week!

    I knew that these cards would surely cheer her up after I left. Really she called me as I was catching my plane back to the US. She said," I found your three cards! By the time I discovered the third, I was laughing out loud! They did me so much good. Thank you so much!" I smiled to myself, 13she still has two more to go! It is Sunday today, so my guess is that she hasn't 14her mailbox or driven her car! I can 15 how happy she will be when she finds them.

    It was l sunny Sunday afternoon. John's parents were not in. John decided to go to the Happy Theater to watch a talent show, so he 1. Only Barky, John's pet 2stayed at home. Just after John left, a bad person 3 the window, and then he came into the house 4it. He began looking for expensive things in the rooms. He found some 5in a box. He took out the money, but as he was leaving, he 6 a dog's barking (叫声). He looked around and found Barky looking at him angrily. He was very scared.

    Barky was about to bite (咬) him when John came home. John let Barky sit down and told the bad person, "Come with me to the 7, or Barky will bite out!" So the bad person had to 8 John to the police station with Barky close behind. A 9put handcuffs on (给...戴上手铐) the bad person after John told him the thing.

    Barky had a(n) 10 for watching the house. But the bad person didn't know.
