    One of the big challenges that students face in applying to universities abroad is writing the application essay.

     Admissions officers(招生负责人) attempt to get at what type of person you are, what motivates you, and what you feel passion for. In a single 500-word piece of writing, they attempt to gather all about you. So your task is to put the stamp of your personality on the essay and make yourself special.

    You can try and guess what the admissions officers like.  The essay will sound empty and become another dull piece of writing, which admissions officers get thousands of each year.

    It is true that admissions officers aren't exactly looking for anything. If they ask for someone who has inspired you, it could be anyone. It could be a grandmother, a teacher, or even a character from a movie. A lot of people will say their dad. But since you really feel it, you'll have a lot to write about.

    There are some important things to remember. These admissions officers want good writers. You don't have to be Ernest Hemingway, but you have to be able to form an interesting story. That means revision and editing, cutting out stupid grammar mistakes, reading it over several times, leaving it for a few days and looking at it again.

    Also, you should use exciting language and really make the reader feel the same passion as you do. It also means finding something unique about your point of view, something that other people might not think of. For example, if you want to write about your dad, you can focus on a specific anecdote(趣闻) about him.

A. The essays you are required to write differ from university to university.

B. The answer is just as open-ended as the question itself.

C. Admissions officers love personal stories that ring true.

D. The essay topics all have something in common.

E. You can turn to famous writers to polish your essay.

F. Whatever you do, make sure the essay is as good as possible.

G. But that won't work.

    Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

    For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

    Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Anger may cause you a cancer.

B. Do not express your anger while angry.

C. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

D. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

E. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

G. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.

How to teach a child to respect

    As a child grows out of being an infant and begins to notice and react to the world around him, you may find yourself wondering how you possibly impart all of the things that he needs to become a responsible, respectful adult.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} A child who learns to respect all he meets not only receives respect from others, but also learns to respect himself as well.

●Show your child respect. This is perhaps the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child by giving him your full attention and he will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in communication.

●{#blank#}2{#/blank#} The more you say “please” and “thank you” to your child, the more likely he will learn to use them with you and others. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.

●Agree to disagree.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Explain your decision so that he will understand your reasoning and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you doesn't equate to disobedience.

●Control your impulse to overact. When a situation arises between you and your child that requires calmness, keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

●Praise, praise, praise! So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it that the accomplishments are not celebrated enough.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A.Teach manners by using polite requests and responses.

B.Try to remember that a child won't always agree with you.

C.Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.

D.If he sees you lose temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

E.A child may act like he pleases, but will respect being given limits.

F.When you see your child exhibit respectful behavior, make sure he knows just how proud you are of him.

G.Setting a good example is the best way to start a child on the path to respect.

任务型阅读

    We are not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to turn the path of anxiety, anger, and sadness into a state of happiness. Here are four ideas to get you started. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

● Laugh out loud

    Just expecting a happy, funny event can raise levels of pleasure-causing hormones (荷尔蒙) and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped greatly, while their levels of pleasure-causing hormones rose 27 percent.

● Do one thing at a time

    Edward Suarez, professor of medical psychology at Duck, found that people who do several things at the same time are more likely to have high blood pressure. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Instead of talking on the phone while cleaning the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation.

●{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Although relationships help take away stress, sometimes you need time to recharge and reflect on your own. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading at home, or looking through books in a bookstore.

● Practice mindfulness

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Instead of worrying about your check-up tomorrow while having dinner with your family, focus on the here and now — food, the company, and the conversation.

A. Spend time alone.

B. Focus on the present.

C. Take care of the soul.

D. Take that finding seriously.

E. Choose the ones that work for you.

F. They started experiencing biological changes right away.

G. Find a quiet place near your house and make it your secret place to escape.

    My friends and I had one-week trip to Bali Island in June three months ago, which was really impressive.

    It wasn't the typical trip by the sea with swimming suit at the beach. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The rest of the days we would practice what we had learnt from the video with our coach, first in the pool, and then in the sea. Every day we had to dress ourselves up in the tight diving suit and a jacket with a heavy steel tank on the back

    I wasn't how most people would imagine spending their holiday. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Not only did we appreciate beautiful view under the ocean, but we also felt less like tourists and more like professional divers as we learn more skills each day. This was more than just diving in life jackets. We were able to get away and explore underwater, swimming with turtles and other beautiful sea creatures in the ocean. “There are no mobile phones down there, no emails, no keys to lose, no birthdays to forget… {#blank#}3{#/blank#} The ocean is the last quiet place on Earth,” as a US journalist wrote in his book DEEP.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} When we had to fully concentrate on our breathing, we started to realized how we had been taking it for granted. We had never truly “felt” ourselves breathe before.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} In fact, my friends and I are already planning another diving trip to the Red Sea in the coming winter holiday. Why not join us?

A. Of course we had dived in the sea before.

B. However, we really enjoyed every minute of it.

C. It's said that diving can be attractive yet I was unsure about it.

D. The experience also allowed us to get to know ourselves better.

E. All stress, noise and troubles of life are left at the surface of the sea.

F. I've become interested in diving and have no doubt about the attraction of diving.

G. Instead, we spent our first morning siting in a room watching teaching videos about diving.

    Running is a great way to get in shape and just about everyone can do it. Given that it's so easy to take up the sport, a lot of beginners jump right into running without actually knowing what it takes to establish a healthy routine.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. If you are just starting out, avoid the following things to help you increase your chances of running success.

    Doing too much too soon

    One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is doing too much too soon. Picking up a new hobby like running is no doubt exciting. Runners need to ease into the sport before increasing the distance.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

    Beginners might think they need to run nearly every day to meet their fitness or weight-loss goals, but this couldn't be further from the truth. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}, especially for beginners whose muscles and bones haven't  yet been conditioned for such intense (剧烈的) exercise. So it's important to give your body ample rest between workouts. Follow a training plan that includes rest days.

    Comparing yourself to others

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. You're excited about running, so you are probably reading running blogs, magazines and message boards where you might start to feel inadequate about your own running pace. Instead of getting down on yourself, remember that every runner was once a beginner and use their success as motivation!

A. Not taking rest days

B. Not running every day

C. As mentioned, a healthy routine is what they attach importance to

D. Running is a demanding activity which can be really hard on your body

E. When starting out with running, it's tough not to compare yourself to others

F. It will help reduce the risk of injury, so you can continue with your new running routine

G. Many make a number of common mistakes, which can interfere (干扰) with training or lead to injury

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort.

B. She enjoys listening to classic music.

C. She never goes to expensive restaurants to enjoy meals.

D. She loves her students and cares for them.

E. My mother is hard-working and never wastes money.

F. Can you tell us something about your mother?

G. I never forget it and always bear it in my mind.

    My mother is a diligent and kind woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher, she works hard. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Both my brother and I love her dearly as she loves us.

    My mother has been teaching math at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints.

    Often she says to us, "work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society". What a piece of good advice this is! {#blank#}5{#/blank#} This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. My mother is great indeed, and I always feel proud of her.
