The Boy Made it!

    One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

    Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
    He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
    Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
    By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
    The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
    Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs. Wild. Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
    When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

Ausie Perine is not a typical superhero. Well, maybe he looks the part, with his signature cape (斗篷) flapping against his blue shirt. But two things set this caped fighter apart: His enemy is not an imaginary one from a comic book but hunger and homelessness. Also, he's only four years old.

Our hero's story started in the family living room. Ausie and his father, TJ Perine, were watching a program on Animal Planet about a mother tiger leaving her cubs. "I told him that the cubs would be homeless," TJ says. "Ausie didn't know what homelessness meant, but he was sad and wanted to know more."

Seeing this as a teachable moment, TJ took Ausie to a local shelter, where they saw some homeless men. "Dad, they look sad," Ausie said. "Can we take them some food and smiles?" That day, Ausie used his allowance to buy each man a sandwich. When they returned the next week, Ausie again dipped into his piggy bank to buy sandwiches, which he handed out along with his new catchphrase, "Don't forget love!"

Days later, word of Ausie's acts of kindness spread through social media. A local food chain jumped aboard, agreeing to donate $10,000 toward the cause. Soon, donations poured in continuously. Thanks to the collective support, now he can feed about 800 people at once.

But Ausie isn't just filling bellies. He's improving the lives of those he meets. In the shelter, Ausie talked to a man named Raymont with respect, which touched him deeply. He shared with TJ just how grateful he was to be treated so considerately by a young stranger. With the help of TJ, Raymont obtained a driver's license, with which he found a job. All that was made possible because a little boy took the time to care.

Ausie's passion has now become his family's calling. They established the Show Love Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to offering medical and mental health care as preventive steps against homelessness. Young Ausie continues to give out food, smiles, and his inspirational message of love. "It makes me feel like I'm saving the day."

It was 1504,and Columbus was making another trip to the New World.Columbus and his men needed fresh water and food after three months at sea.They saw an island and went to the shore.On the island there were unfriendly Indians who refused to give food and water to them.Columbus' men were afraid of the Indians,but he had a clever plan.He used gesture(手势) language to tell the Indians about his mysterious (神秘的) power to turn off the light in the sky.He knew about a lunar eclipse (月食) the next night because the information was in his almanac (天文历书).Columbus told the Indians,"Tomorrow night I'll turn off the light in the sky." But they didn't believe him.When the eclipse began the next night,the Indians became very frightened.They begged Columbus to turn on the light again,and they quickly gave him all the food and water he wanted.Immediately Columbus and his men hurried back to the ship and sailed away in the moonless night.

The university I attend has about 3500 students. One early afternoon, I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (walk) around the campus when I found a female student sitting on the walkway with tears on her face. Everyone just walked by her, so I decided to stop {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (give) her a hand. I dropped my books and sat down beside her. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} turned out that she injured her ankle (脚踝) and was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (able) to walk. So I told her that I would sit with her {#blank#}5{#/blank#} she was ready to get up. It only took a few minutes for her to calm down. Then I took her {#blank#}6{#/blank#}the hand and got her to the nearest hospital.

She thanked me so much for just stopping! Since then, when we run into each other {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (occasional) on campus, she would smile and thank me again. And we have become good friends now. I am amazed that just my sitting there, {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (offer) support and comfort to a total {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(strange) would affect her so greatly. She said she was grateful for what I had done, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} made her feel that she was not alone in the world.

Grainne lived alone. My morning routine 1 with her daily walks to and from her gates, and we began having 2 there.

She was an easy conversationalists, with a good habit of focusing 3 on me as we talked. She told me she was 87, and she was surprised I was only 26. I found myself 4 her things I hadn't necessarily told anyone. "I have never felt at home anywhere, I'm traveling to find out where I 5 ." I told her.

We both looked forward to my daily 6 . However, as our friendship grew, my beloved grandfather was seriously ill. I 7 to go back to India soon.

The day before I left Dublin, I went to say goodbye to Grainne. We both knew we were likely talking to each other in person for the 8 time.

Shortly after my return to India, my grandfather 9 . I emailed Grainne telling her "I lost the only person who made me feel less 10 ." Grainne wrote back, an email full of 11 . She said: "I hope you understand you don't fit into places. You fit into 12 . You will always fit where you have people to fit with."

Although I was never able to 13 Grainne again, my friendship with her continued through emails. It was one of the most 14 friendship I've ever known. I was 26 and alone in a foreign country, and she was 87 and alone in her own home. Together we made the world 15 again.

We all know how it feels to get lost in a great book. But what's happening in our brains as we dive into it? How is it different from what happens as we experience real life? Now, a new study led by Dr Leila Wehbe and Dr Tom Mitehell of Carnegie Mellon University have provided partial answers to these questions. 

Since reading comprehension is a highly complex process, earlier studies tried to break that process down and focus on just one aspect at a time: mapping fMRI signatures（特征）associated with processing a single word or sentence, for example. "It's usually not like reading a book, and usually the stimulus（刺激物）consists of out-of-context sentences designed specifically for the experiment"

To address these issues, the researchers developed a computer program to look for patterns of brain activity that appeared when people read certain words, specific grammatical structures, particular characters" names and other aspects of the story—a total of 195 different "story features". In the study, they first asked eight volunteers to read Chapter 9 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and recorded their brain activity using an fMRI scanner（扫描仪）. Then the researchers fed the volunteers' fMRI data into their computer program and had the program identify the responses of different brain regions to the 195 features mentioned above. 

The result showed that when the volunteers read descriptions of physical movement in the story, there was significantly increased activity in the posterior temporal cortex, the region involved in perceiving real-world movement. Besides dialogue was specifically related with the right temporoparietal junction, a key area involved in imagining others thoughts and goals. "This is truly shocking for us as these regions aren't even considered to be part of the brain's language system," Wehbe says. 

Next, Wehbe and Mitchell hope to study how and why language processing can go wrong. "If we have a large enough amount of data", Wehbe says, "we could find the specific ways in which one brain—for example, the brain of a dyslexic（诵读困难的）person—is performing differently from other brains." And this, the researchers think, may someday help us design individually tailored（特制的）treatments for dyslexia and other reading disorders.
