I was 17 years old. Along with a dozen other boys I had made a long trip to Iowa in order to see a college that I was thinking of 1 . Now I was there and I was feeling sad and 2 . I was missing my family and the Appalachian mountains of my home. I loved 3 in the forests there. I loved how the 4 turned a thousand shades of green in the spring and then became a sea of red. 5 . and orange in the fall. I loved the 6 of countless wild flowers that grew in our meadows(草地). These things were a 7 of me.

A boy who has been climbing the equivalent（等量）of Mount Qomolangma in aid of a children's hospice（救济院）is about to reach his fundraising goal of £29,031. Six-year-old Oscar, from Lancaster, has climbed 10 of the UK's highest mountains to help Chorley's Derian House. He said he needed two more to match Mount Qomolangma's 29,031 feet height.

Oscar started his challenge on October 9, 2022, and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales was the first mountain to be chosen. He said that the hardest climb so far had been Cairn Gorm in the Scottish Highlands because the snow was so deep.

Oscar took on the challenge in the hope of raising enough money to send 29 children with life-limiting illnesses on holiday. "I wanted to be the youngest person to climb Mount Qomolangma and I have climbed 10 out of 12 mountains. When I get older, I want to climb the real Mount Qomolangma," Oscar said.

"It was amazing what a child's dream can achieve. We're speechless and couldn't be prouder. We were grateful to everyone that supported us along Oscar's journey," Oscar's father Matt wrote on the social media.

Oscar and his family hoped to make their final climb on Ben Nevis in Scotland on May 29, 2023. The climb would mark not only the completion of Oscar's challenge, but also the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent（攀登）of Mount Qomolangma by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

"For every foot he climbed, our children would get a pound to achieve their dreams. The total £29,031 raised by Oscar would help support the work of the hospice, which provides end-of-life care to more than 400 children across the northwest of England," said Karen Edwards, a senior official of Derian House.

"The six-year-old was an unbelievable little boy who had truly gone to great heights. How many six-year-olds could say that they have climbed the height of Mount Qomolangma?" Karen added.

Upon my arrival at Falconwood Apiary, Kaat Kaye is already engrossed in the meticulous inspection of the apian domiciles, oblivious to my arrival. I find myself privy to her soft murmurings directed towards the bees, their mellifluous drone resonating through the atmosphere, interspersed with her gentle words of encouragement and compromise.

Kaye was born with profound auditory impairment. Although she has the capacity to perceive sounds with the aid of auditory prosthetics, she often dispenses with them during her labors. "Acoustic sensations are alien to my experience," she elucidates. "I revel in the tranquility and stillness. In the company of bees, aural perception is superfluous. My concentration is heightened when not beset by incessant auditory distractions."

In her vocation, she champions organic apicultural practices that minimize the utilization of chemical treatments. Moreover, she gathers all the requisite intelligence for the stewardship of the hives by depending on her non-auditory senses. Perhaps most notably, what renders Kaye an extraordinary apiarist is almost metaphysical. Excelling in her vocation is inextricably linked to adaptability, navigating the myriad uncertainties that emerge on any given day. Is precipitation excessive? Scarce? When will the flora reach full bloom? Will it yield a bountiful harvest of honey? She responds with alacrity, ensuring not to disrupt the bees' cadence and equilibrium.

"There is a profound, almost spiritual dimension to the craft of beekeeping," she remarked. "You cannot exert absolute dominion over them, akin to any element of the natural world, indeed. Some years bestow upon us an abundant honey harvest. Other years are fraught with adversity, resulting in the loss of half of the hive. There is considerable sorrow but also considerable delight, too, in simply toiling in the great outdoors with these sentient beings—a living, complex superorganism."

My grandfather was born in a small town in Italy. He would wake up at four in the morning every day to work on the farm. Although he was a great student in school, he only went up to Grade 3 because he was required to help with the family farm. 

Later, my grandfather used his own hard-earned savings—the small amount was all he had—to travel to Canada. He was alone in a new country, not knowing anyone and not speaking English or French. At a farm, the owner quickly saw what a hard-working young man my grandfather was, so he paid my grandfather a much higher salary. Although the owner was very nice to him and treated him like family, he was not satisfied. He dreamed of being more successful, of better career advancements. 

One day, he got an offer to work in the construction industry. My grandfather, a newly immigrated young famer, who was eager to move up in the world, caught this opportunity and prospered( 发达 ) through hard work. Around 1967, however, he become overwhelmed(不知所措的)with stress, sleepless nights and anxiety from the business. He also had two young daughters to take care of and my grandmother was in the hospital at the time. The combined stress and anxiety unfortunately drove him into a major depression. During a medical check-up, his doctor warned him about his health. He knew it was time for him to make a change and decided to sell his shares in the company. 

He then began a smaller business of his own, which resulted in less stress and more time with family. Had he chosen not to quit his former job, he might have been a billionaire today. My grandfather will turn 95 in October; even at this ripe old age, he is still strong, well and high-spirited. Looking at his story as a life example, he teaches us to work hard, but at the same time not to forget to enjoy life and have a good sense of humour about it all. 

Work is important, sure, but there is much more to life than just that. Overall, this is the ultimate key to happiness.
