I spent two weeks in Kenya as a volunteer in a natural reserve. Our 1 was aimed at protecting wildlife. And we also did other 2 work, helping the local people to improve their living conditions.

I 3 the woods with slow heavy steps, picked up a few traps left by 4 hunters and helped monitor the population of giraffes, which was at risk to illegal hunting. We also 5 sporting equipment to local schools, where you could see their textbooks and classrooms were in 6 condition. We made changes, but sometimes they seemed useless. There are so many problems that need to be 7 such as environmental damage, illegal hunting, and lack of 8 to education. What can one group of volunteers accomplish? These are problems that maybe need to 9 many years to address.

So why choose to be a volunteer? After all, it is unpaid and often very hard work. Even though it is easy to get 10 , most of the time what we are in search of is life's meaning—to spend our 11 well and for a good cause.

These are moments I will 12 for a long time—the salty air, dozens of zebras eating grass, the sunset over the hills. And also the smiles, the waves of local children, the13 sound of laughter among strangers have been 14 impressed in my mind. These are the moments that remind me of how proud I am to have been a volunteer. These are the 15 that will stay with me forever and remind me of a time, a place and a certain destination.

I had never picked up a camera before my freshman year in 2012, when my journey to an artist began. For four years, I 1 G-Star School of The Arts, where my 2 for photography and filmmaking were awaken.

Having seen my first short film, my teacher came over, saying: "You got a good 3 . Why not consider doing this as your profession. I think you've got a 4 in it". Then, it clicked. I, therefore, 5 my bank account and bought my first camera.

Since then, I was amazed by the 6 the world has to offer. I have to 7 , though: I, shy and chicken-hearted, tended to capture nature-related scenes, 8 anything to do with people.

As I was 9 my way, I started photographing myself, the only one I felt 10 with. The camera soon became my strongest 11 , serving as the tool for how I expressed myself. Gradually, I gained enough 12 to start taking photos of other people, greatly touched by how I was able to 13 the best in them through the lens (镜头).

Each year, I would look back on all of the shots I did that year and would 14 them to the first one I ever took in my career. Although the progress seemed substantial, I realized the key to growth as an artist is to never be 15 . This allows me to create progressively better work year after year.

When I was 15 years old, I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn't the first time I had been to a foreign1 . Like most English children I2 French as school and I had often been too France, so I was used to3 a foreign language to people who didn't understand English. But when I went to America I was really looking forward to having a nice holiday without any4 problems.

How wrong I was! The misunderstanding5 at the airport. I was looking for a6 telephone to give my American friend Danny a7 and told her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking lost and asked if he could8 me."Yes", I said,"I want to give my friend a ring"."Well, that's nice,"he said."Are you getting married? But aren't you a bit 9 ?""Who is talking about marriage?"I became a little10 ,"I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I have arrived. Can you tell me11 there's a phone box?""Oh!"he said,"there is a phone downstairs."

When at last, we did meet up, I told Danny what12 to me. Danny laughed,"I had so many13 at first. There are lots of words which the Americans14 differently in meaning from us British."She said to me,"But don't worry. You'll soon15 to all the funny things they say. Most of the time British and American people understand each other!"

I was first going into this final day, the Junior Sled Dog Championship. We'd trained two years and wanted to beat Blake. I knelt down to pat Kenai and my hands 1 from nerves and excitement. Kenai tipped up his face to lick my chin. "You are 2 , aren't you?"

Just before the countdown started, Blake shot me a 3 grin, hands trembling too. Then I heard, "Go!" 4 I could yell "Hike!", Kenai leaped forward. The rest of the dogs 5 after. We started last. We flew down the long hill. Then we 6 a corner. I leaned to keep the sled steady. Kenai saw Blake's team before I did. His tail flew up, and he 7 . Seeing his tongue still flopping forward, I let him go all out. We closed the 8 . A bridge later, we inched closer. On the next hill, Kenai drew even with Blake's sled and then we passed it.

9 our sled hit a branch. The runners caught. I lost my 10 and fell off the sled. Witnessing the sled come to a stop, I struggled through the deep snow to Kenai. I 11 . His shoulder was bleeding.

"Kenail! No!", My voice came out a howl. Kenai 12 to stand. He looked at me, his blue eyes 13 to keep on. He would do it, too. For one frozen moment I saw myself on the winner's stand with the trophy. But no, I bent and gently 14 Kenai in a blanket.

The race vet examining Kenai, I watched Blake accept the trophy. Kenai squirming (扭动) in my lap, I leaned over upon him. Just at that moment, I felt a warm tongue on my wet cheek. I smiled and realized that I had the 15 that really counted.

Cruz Genet,11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn't agree. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese? So on a 1 January evening last year, the two friends ventured onto the 2 pond near their homes, to get a better look. First they tossed a rock onto the ice to3 it. Then they stepped on it. 4 the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, then…FOOMP. He crashed through the 5 frozen surface." There was no sound, no crack," he recalled,"I just fell through instantly". Cruz 6 to help his panicked friend. FOOMP— the pond 7 him too.

 The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling in their limbs. Any chance of their 8 themselves was slipping away. Cruz was sure he was going to die. Anthony's older sister was nearby and started screaming for help.

 John Lavin, a9 driving nearby on his way home, heard her. He quickly 10 . Seeing the boys, he grabbed a nearby buoy (救生圈), 11 off his shoes, and ran into the cold water, chopping(劈) his way through the ice with his free 12 .

 Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and pulled them back to land. When in hospital, doctors discovered that their five- minute 13 in the water had lowered their body 14 nearly ten degrees.

 Fortunately, the boys have fully recovered, though they are still a little awestruck by their 15 neighbor." Just to think," says Cruz," If he weren't there, we could have died."

I was interested in volunteering at a hospital because both of my parents work in hospitals. I wanted to see what the 1 was after hearing them talk about it. To be more 2 , I wanted to work at the VA — a hospital in Palo Alto because the 3 of VA is "to serve those who served" and I really 4 this very idea.

To my greatest joy, I was 5 the VA program, and throughout this summer break I've spent around 110 hours 6 at VA Palo Alto in different departments. To be honest, I had never at all felt more welcomed and 7 in every department I went to. After some initial experiences, I 8 to work in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) since I am interested in computers, and I wanted to see how they are used in a hospital setting.

My overall experience of volunteering at VA can be 9 into the words of "eye-opening and 10 ." Throughout my whole life I have been 11 to health care from both my parents being physicians and my health problems, but I have never 12 been on the other side of the glass, so to speak. What I 13 most about my experience was the ability to see what it's like to help people. I want to 14 volunteering at VA because I believe there is no other experience that can be as 15 as working in a hospital that treats Veterans.
