Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.
Life is busy and exciting.Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10  million and heavy traffic.I'm very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside  the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18, the daughter Chinda, who  is 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.
I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent  in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I've learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite.I'm learning all about Thai food and culture People don't use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back,I'm going to cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok.I  thought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month they're taking me to Phuket  Island, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next,we're going to travel  to Mr.Phairat,s hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they  have two elephants.I'm going to ride those elephants — and even wash them.Sanan and  Chinda say it's really fun.
I'm amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants.Elephants are an  important pan of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol(象征)of  Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century,a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle.
I'll tell you all about my Thai boxing(拳击)lessons next time I write.
Love,
Mandy

Dear Edward,

How are you doing? I just visited Machu Picchu in Peru today. I've never seen such a great place before. This place is so amazing that I want to share my feelings with you.

When I first got to Machu Picchu, I felt like I was walking in the sky. Even the clouds were just under my feet. Do you know how high Machu Picchu is? I was surprised that it was at about 2,500m. How could people build a city on such a high mountain? It must have been very difficult to move stones there.

Before the Europeans arrived, the Incas (印加人) were the last and the most modern society in the Andes (安第斯山). The Incas were afraid that the Spanish would find them, so they built Machu Picchu on an Andes plain (平地) as a secret city in the 14th or 15th century. As a result, the Spanish never found Machu Picchu.

An American explorer discovered Machu Picchu in 1911. For a long time before that, nobody even knew Machu Picchu was there. After Machu Picchu was found, it was called "The Lost City of the Incas". It is still a mystery why and how Machu Picchu was left and forgotten by everyone.

I just had a wonderful day. Especially, I will never forget the "goodbye boy" who was a local boy dressed in traditional Inca clothes. When we went down the mountain by bus, the boy waved goodbye to us until we were out of sight (视线). He shouted some words at us too, and I guess, it meant, "Goodbye, come back again soon!" Why don't you visit Machu Picchu someday? I am sure you will love this place as much as I do.

                                                                                                                                                                      Yours truly,

                                                                                                                                                                          Lynn

If you meet a British person in the street, it is very likely that he or she will apologize whether it is his or her fault (过错) or not.

It seems that Britain is becoming a nation where everyone is saying sorry. Almost each person says sorry about eight times each day—and one in eight people apologize as many as 20 times a day.

As you may have seen, the British apologize more often than members of other cultures. A research shows that in many cases, people's love of saying sorry in Britain goes a little further than it does for Americans. For example, about 15 British people would say ”sorry” while only 10 from the US would do this if they sneezed, if they corrected someone's mistake of if someone knocked into them.

In the old days, “sorry” was used to express regret and sadness for having done something wrong. But now British people use the expression as a way of showing good manners. For example, they might say “sorry” instead of “excuse me”, “pardon”, “what” or “whatever”.

People in Britain also use sorry when they share the same feeling with others—so they might say “sorry about the rain”.

However, British people's use of “sorry” may make things very confusing (迷惑不清) and difficult for foreigners who are not familiar with their ways. But actually, people in Britain pay much attention to the feelings of others. This is the very reason why they apologize every day.

England is the biggest of the four countries in the United Kingdom. Together with Scotland and Wales, these three countries make up the island of Great Britain. When you include Northern Ireland (the country in the northeastern part of Ireland) we call it the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK). Over 50 million people live in England. That's around 80 percent of the UK's total population. It is a multicultural (多元文化的) country where more than 250 languages are spoken in the capital city of London. Outside of the big cities, England is a very green country and has many beautiful rural areas, such as the Lake District in the north and the New Forest, a big area of forest in the southern part of the country.

Music

English people love music. In the summer, there are music festivals all over the country. Glastonbury (格拉斯顿堡) is a five-day festival of music, dance, comedy, theatre and circus (马戏). About 175,000 people go to it each year.

People in England listen to all types of music, especially pop and rock. England has produced many international groups and singers like the Beatles, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Adele.

Sport

The most popular sports in England are football, rugby (橄榄球) and cricket (板球). Most towns have at least one field where teams can play. English football teams like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are world-famous. Cricket is a traditional sport played with a bat (球拍) and ball. It began in England and is now played all over the world.

Food

England is a very multicultural country and this has a big influence on the food people eat. Indian, Chinese and Italian cuisines (饭菜) are popular besides traditional English food like fish and chips, roast beef or sausage and mashed potatoes (土豆泥). Many English people drink several cups of tea each day, usually with milk.
