Today is {#blank#}1{#/blank#} and hot. The temperature(温度) is about 39.5℃.My friends and I {#blank#}2{#/blank#}to the beach because we think it's an {#blank#}3{#/blank#} place in summer. There are lots of people on the beach. They {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a great time. Look at those people over there. They are {#blank#}5{#/blank#} beach volleyball. Some boys are lying(躺) {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the beach and talking. They are very {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. Look at that woman. She {#blank#}8{#/blank#} photos. Her camera is new. There are also many people swimming {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the sea, and they look very happy. We want {#blank#}10{#/blank#}, too.

I moved here three years ago, and because of my business, I needed to fly both to China and the United States often. When I traveled alone, I felt lonely because I didn't speak English well. I made a decision that I had to learn English well.

I came to Rita Colina's class at the Chinese Community Center in Houston. Before the class, I always walked away when I met any foreigner. It's completely different now. I try to communicate with Americans in English by myself. Now I like to talk to foreigners. Not only the life becomes more flexible, but also I really love to live here.

I learn English in four ways:

First of all, I listen to what the teacher teaches in class. Then I keep speaking during the class.

Second, I do my homework right away when I get home. I memorize at least five vocabulary words every day.

Third, I listen to American radio stations, and I watch the TV news and other American programs with my family every day. I ask them whatever I don't know.

Finally, I go to American stores as often as possible so I will have more chances to learn more new words, and find any chance to talk to Americans in English.

Anyway, the most important thing is not to be afraid to open your mouth. It doesn't matter even though you speak incorrectly. It's the key, you know.

I was looking through my old photos last Sunday. One photo{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(catch) my eye. In the photo, I was sitting in a chair, hugging Duke, my best friend in the whole world.

Duke was an interesting name for such{#blank#}2{#/blank#}little dog. But he was my friend from the moment I could walk. He stayed with me in that chair when I read{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(book). When I went outside{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(play) games, he would drive our cats up to the trees and then walk off feeling proud of{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(him). When he was hungry, he would carry his food dish in his mouth and drop{#blank#}6{#/blank#}at my mom's feet. When I was sick, he refused to leave my bed until I got{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(well) than before.

I learned a lot from Duke. I learned that a short sleep at noon could be good{#blank#}8{#/blank#}you. I learned that simplest dinner can be delicious{#blank#}9{#/blank#}you eat it with great enjoyment. I learned that life can be good when you live it with love and joy.   {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(sad), I also learned that life is short, especially if you are a dog.

To me, Duke is like a teacher who has taught me how to love and to be loved.

What makes a true friend? I think a true friend {#blank#}1{#/blank#} always be ready to help others. I didn't believe it until (直到……才) one thing happened to me when I was eight years old.

My friend Wang Zhenhui always listened to his mother, and he never {#blank#}2{#/blank#} his mother's rules. But I was different. I didn't think it was {#blank#}3{#/blank#} for my mother to teach me everything. Wang Zhenhui knew all about that, but he said {#blank#}4{#/blank#} to me.

One day, Wang Zhenhui invited me to watch a movie. I liked it very much, so I went to the cinema with him happily. The movie was about the love {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a mother and a son. It really touched my{#blank#}6{#/blank#}. After watching it, I started to knowhow great the love of the mother was. I fel sorry for no listening to my mother before decided to think more about my mother {#blank#}7{#/blank#} about myself. After I told him my plan, Wang Zhenhui smiled and said, "This movie is really great. That's a good choice for {#blank#}8{#/blank#} you and me."

Suddenly, I knew{#blank#}9{#/blank#} we were at the cinema. I realized (意识到) a true friend is helpful. It's {#blank#}10{#/blank#} good to have a friend like Wang Zhenhui.

Lily: Hello, Betty! How's your first day of school?

Betty: Hey, Lily! {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I'm happy to see my friends. What about you?

Lily: Me, too. My classmates and teachers are great.

Lily: My favourite subject is music.

Betty: Yes,I do. But my favourite subject is English.

There was a class of students who were very unruly (难管教的). None of the teachers wanted to teach them. So the headmaster had to call a teacher named Nancy who had just given up {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (she) job at a different school. He asked Nancy if she would like to come in and teach at the school {#blank#}2{#/blank#} one term. She agreed quickly {#blank#}3{#/blank#} thinking twice. 

The headmaster decided not to tell Nancy {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (something) about the class. He was afraid that she would be scared off. After Nancy taught this class for a month, the headmaster sat in the class to see how things were going. To his surprise, all the students did good jobs by {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (they). The headmaster praised (赞扬) Nancy for her work in and {#blank#}6{#/blank#} class. And Nancy thanked{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(he) for giving her such an excellent class to teach. But the headmaster said he really didn't deserve (值得) any thanks. 

Nancy smiled and told him, "You see, I discovered your secret {#blank#}8{#/blank#} my first day here. I looked in the desk and found a list of the students IQ scores. I knew that I had a challenging group {#blank#}9{#/blank#} children here — they were so smart that I would have to work really hard to make the study interesting for them. "

She showed the headmaster the list with the students'names and the numbers 136, 146, 129, 132, and so on written next to the names. The headmaster laughed and said, "{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(that) were not their IQ scores, but their locker (储物柜) numbers!"
