To me, music is food and water. I can't live without it. I know this is not true for everybody. Many people don't listen to music and they can get along quite well. But music is everywhere in our life. For example, when you watch films or TV plays, do you find them interesting if there is no music? You would find them boring. And when you are waiting for the train or the plane, you would like music because it makes the time shorter.

It is true that music is everywhere in our life. Some people like to sit by the sea and listen to the sound of the sea. Some enjoy listening to the singing of birds. Those sounds are some kinds of music. So music has meaning for everyone in some way or other. Of course, it has special meaning for people like me. We spend our lives playing or writing music.

What would life be like if you were a rocker, a soccer player, a professor(教授)at Stanford University, and a Nobel Prize winner? Carolyn Bertozzi from the US lives such a cool life!

Bertozzi, 56, wins this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry and becomes this year's only female(女性) winner in science and the eighth female to receive the chemistry prize in history.

Bertozzi won the prize for studying the sugar coats of cells(细胞). She has found a smart way to connect cells together. This finding helps to develop better tests for serious diseases like cancer.

However, Bertozzi said she only fell in love with chemistry until her second year at Harvard University."Most of my classmates thought the class was very difficult. But I liked it a lot because in my eyes the problems were challenging even though it usually took me long hours to solve them."

Besides doing science studies, Bertozzi has lived a colorful life. She was a keyboarder in a rock band and she also played soccer, winning an athletic scholarship from Harvard.

Moreover, Bertozzi never forgets her job as a female scientist. "In the late 1980s, only 10 percent of the students were females," she told Chemical & Engineering News. "There were maybe only one or two females in a lab, so we tried to support each other by starting a monthly get-together. Now, I'm so glad to see more and more females taking part in science." In 2022, Bertozzi won an award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her work to increase diversity(性别多元)in science.

Kathy: Betty, how was your holiday?

Betty: Not bad. I was just staying at my grandma's home.

Mike: Where does your grandmother live?

Betty: My grandmother lives in the countryside. This place can let me relax and study at the same time.

Kathy: I agree with you. The countryside is quiet and lets us slow down our pace of life(生活节奏).

Mike: What have you learned during your holiday?

Betty: I've learned something about language learning. It is very important for us. And I searched for some information on the Internet. I found that Hong Kong held a meeting about language learning and teaching in July, 2024.

Kathy: About language learning and teaching?

Betty: Yes. Experts(专家) from all over the world came to Hong Kong for the meeting. They talked about how technology(科技) can improve language learning.

Mike: That sounds so cool. Technology is developing very fast. We all need technology every day, like mobile payments and online shopping.

Kathy: You're right. I think technology is also very helpful to our language learning. For example, we can learn some things beyond books through the Internet.

Betty: I had a pen friend that holiday. She has helped me a lot with my spoken English. We have kept in touch on the Internet.

Mike: After listening to your sharing, I also want to make a pen friend.

Betty: Haha. What about your holiday life, Mike?
