Shandong Province held the 36th Weifang International Kite Festival on the third Saturday of April in2019. A lot of kite fans from all over the world went there to join in the interesting festival on that day. Different kinds of beautiful kites flew in the sky.

Over 2, 000 years ago, a man named Gongshu Ban from Shandong Province invented a kite. It was made of bamboo. In the following centuries, kite-making developed well in China.

The first Weifang International Kite Festival was celebrated in 1984. In 1983, the Chairman of the Seattle Kite Association David Checkley took part in a kite show and later he visited several kite manufacturers(制造商). He found that kites made in Weifang were the best. He suggested holding the first Weifang International Kite Festival there. After that, Weifang began to hold it in April every year.

At the fifth festival, Weifang became known as the" Kite Capital of the World". Today, Weifang is home to over 300 kite factories. People in Weifang sell their products to about 40 countries and regions(地区) , making up 85 %of the domestic(国内的)markets and 65 %of the foreign markets.

However, there are also some problems. "Few people would like to learn about traditional kite-making," said Yang Hongwei. Yang's grandfather was once one of the best kite makers in Weifang. Nowadays, Yang still uses traditional ways and skills to make kites. In her opinion, only traditional things can last for a long time. Since the1990s, she has travelled to many countries to teach and take part in kite shows. "I won't stop teaching the ways of making kites as long as someone wants to learn. Meanwhile, the government should hold more kite festivals in China or even overseas, "she said.

High—speed trains

China created its first high—speed railway line in 2008. Since then, many visitors have travelled around China by high—speed trains. China is working on new high—speed trains that will have a top speed of 400 kilometers per hour. These high—speed trains will connect more than 80 percent of main cities across China.

Shared Bikes

Shared bike services started in western countries. Unlike traditional bike—sharing methods, China's shared bikes allow users to simply pickup or park on the street. People just need to scan a QR code (扫描二维码) on a shared bike with a smartphone app. After you finish riding, you can park it everywhere, lock it and pay for your ride.

Mobile payment

Mobile payment is turning China into a "cashless(无现金的) society". For example, customers now pay for goods simply by Ali pay or WeChat pay with their mobile phones. They can also use Alipay to buy things on international websites and apps. What's more,in some countries around the world, they can also use Alipay or WeChat pay.

Online Shopping

China has the largest number of Internet users in the world. The largest online shopping website Alibaba has created an "online shopping festival" and celebrates it on November 11th every year. People can buy plenty of things at good prices on that day. And online shopping also helps to provide jobs for many people.

The "four new great inventions" are not the only "Made in China" products to be welcomed in foreign countries. China plays a more and more important role in the world.

Recently, researchers have found that dolphins know their own names much like people. Dolphins talk to one another with whistles(口哨)and calls. Scientists have known that the animals also use unusual whistles to name each other. They had thought that dolphins only heard each other's voices. However, the scientists didn't know that dolphins listen for their names too.

To test this idea, the researchers caught 14 dolphins and recorded their name calls. The scientists then copied each dolphin's voice. When the changed recordings were played, the dolphins replied strongly to the names of their relatives and group members. They paid no attention to the names of dolphins they did not know.

Dolphins live in large groups that grow and change. Each dolphin's unusual whistle helps it quickly find a friend or a family member, or call for help. Understanding their calls requires learning. It's a skill that's seen in very few animals, which include humans and elephants.

Elephants, for example, communicate with sound. Their sounds can be heard by other elephants miles away. Dolphins, too, communicate with each other by making sounds like this. Elephants also communicate by moving their head, feet and trunk(象鼻). In much the same way, dolphins communicate by their movements. They often touch each other to express friendship.

Unlike dolphins, elephants also communicate by their great sense of smell. They can recognize other elephants by the smells they have.

Why do dolphins and elephants share the gift of communication? Scientists think it may be because they are social and smart animals. Both have strong family relationship. Now, whether they also have nicknames(绰号)is another question!
