Chinese people are proud of their food. However, when foreigners like Britons think of Chinese food, their impressions (印象) of are different from what you might think.
I grew up in the UK. The Chinese food I was used to was food from Guangdong. For example, a(n) dish I would order would be sweet and sour pork (糖醋排骨). This is the type of food we generally eat lots of Chinese immigrants (移民) to the UK have come from Guangdong.
Something is changing, though Chinese-American cook Ken Hom has beenBritish TV for 30 years, and he said, “At the beginning of the 1980s, Chinese food was sweet and sour pork, mainly … Now you are seeing more Chinese food from Sichuan, Hunan and other of China. It is no longer just Cantonese food.”
What do foreigners think when they come to China and taste real Chinese food? You'll be glad that in my experience, the impressions have been very good.
My personal favorite is Yunnan food. And every foreigner I've eaten it with was by the different flavors (风味) when they try it.
One of my friendsin Yunnan for a year. She says she still hasn't had “proper Yunnan food” since then. That's thewhen you finally eat real Chinese food—you become picky (挑剔的)!
