A desert is a place where almost no rain falls. Only plants and animals that need very little water can live in a desert. Here are two types of deserts.

In some deserts, the land is rocky. They're called rocky deserts. Plants can store their own water grow in the dry and rocky deserts of North America. Rattlesnakes (响尾蛇) live in rocky deserts. A rattlesnake gets its name from the rattle (响环) on the end of its tail. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Most cacti (仙人掌) grow in rocky desert. They grow very slowly, but they can live for 20 years. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Some types of owls like to build their homes in them.

 Throwing snowballs is one of the oldest and most popular winter activities. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} is so popular that more and more people start showing their interest. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (actual); throwing and dodging(躲避) snowballs has been turned into a team sport.

 The Japanese {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (start) yukigassen in 1988." Yukigassen" means " snowball fight" in Japanese. It was first a {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (children) game of throwing snowballs at one another. Now, this winter sport has become popular in other {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (country) that get a lot of snow.

 Yukigassen is played on a snowy field between two teams of seven players. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} purpose of the game is simple: hit players of the other team {#blank#}7{#/blank#} throwing a snowball at them. Being hit by a snowball means that player is" out". The team with {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(many) players left on the field than the other team wins the game. Another way {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (win) a game is for your team to catch the card on the other team's side of the field.

" People enjoy Yukigassen {#blank#}10{#/blank#} everybody likes making snowballs and throwing them at one another." said Mimatsu Yasushi, the CEO of the Showa- Shinzan International Yukigassen Executive Committee.

 In a new study, researchers found a fact. Whether it's sports practice, music lessons or a usual catch- up with friends, when children are doing after- school activities, they may feel happier and healthier than those who always look at a screen.

 What's more, children's happiness improved when they joined in after- school activities, while things were completely ▲ when they spent time on social media (媒体) or playing video games.

 The researchers studied 61,759 school students from Grade Four to Grade Nine. They worked out how many days every week children joined in after- school activities from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Then they compared the number to well- being factors (幸福的因素 ) like satisfaction, sadness and worry.

 Lead researcher Dr. Rosa Virgara said the research showed how some out- of- school activities can improve children's happiness, while others, especially screens, can be bad for their mental(精神上的) and physical health." Screens are a big distraction(分散注意力的事物) for children of all ages. Whether children are playing games, watching TV or using social media, there is something about all screens that hurts their happiness," she said.

 The study also showed that even children who were already happy also benefited (得益于) from joining in after- school activities." This shows that there is a big need to find ways to encourage children of all ages and backgrounds to join in activities that keep them away from TVs, computers and smart phones," Dr. Rosa Virgara said.

Mangroves are special trees that grow near the sea. They are really good at cleaning the water and helping animals like birds. They can protect the seaside from big waves when there are big storms. They also help fight climate(气候) change by taking in CO₂.

A new center called the International Mangrove Center (IMC) was opened in Shenzhen on November 6^th,2024. The center was built by 18 different countries to protect mangroves. As a vital part of mangroves protection, it will help make rules for keeping mangoves safe. People share ideas on how to take care of mangroves and animals that live there. A professor from Tsinghua University thinks that the center will help people learn more about the mangroves and how to protect them.

 From 2020, Shenzhen has done a great job protecting mangrove forests and the birds living in them. People are not allowed to use streetlights because it may hurt the birds' eyes at night. Shenzhen is showing how to bring back mangoves and make better places for them. It shows that cities can help take care of nature. With the help of the IMC, mangroves in Shenzhen will be better taken care of and grow better.
