What do you when you begin to read an English newspaper？

 You'd better know what sections are there.Usually，there is international news，business，science and technology，entertainment or lifestyle，sports and cartoons.You can choose your favorite section to read carefully.

 Then，you come to the article itself.If you don't have time to read the whole article，the headline（标题）and photo give you a general idea of the story.

 Different kinds of articles

A news article includes body text and a photo with a short piece of text under it.It usually puts the most important information at the very beginning.If you don't have much time to read the story，just have a look at the first paragraph.

 A feature article is an in-depth（深度的）report on an event or person.It usually has an interesting opening.You get to know the idea of the article as you read.

 Another kind of article is an opinion（评论）article.Usually，some famous people give their own opinions about an important issue in a fun way.Opinion is different from news stories that are all facts.

 Be a critical（批判性的）reader

There are advertisements in newspapers.They can provide useful information about products，places，food or jobs.Remember that people make advertisements to sell you things.You don't have to do everything advertisements tell you to do.You should be critical enough to judge which advertisements are useful and which are not.

      One day, a mother crocodile (鳄鱼) and a baby crocodile swam slowly in a riven Suddenly, the mother crocodile saw a monkey, "Oh, a monkey! How nice if I have it for dinner!"

    "My son, can you go and get the monkey for me? I want to eat his heart," the mother crocodile said.

    "All right," the baby crocodile answered.

    The baby crocodile swam near the river bank (河岸). He shouted at the monkey, "Hey, monkey! Would you like some bananas? There are many banana trees over there on the other bank of the river."

    "I like them very much. But I can't swim. How can I get there?" the monkey asked.

    "Oh, I can take you there," the baby crocodile said.

    "Really? Thank you very much!" the monkey jumped onto the baby crocodile's back. In the middle of the river, the baby crocodile went into the water. When he came up again, the monkey was wet all over. "Don't do that again, or you'll kill me!" the monkey shouted.

    "I know, but I must do that! My mother wants to eat your heart."

    "My heart? Why didn't you tell me earlier7 I left it in a tree. We should go back for it!" So they went back.

    As soon as they got to the bank, the monkey picked up a big stone (石头) and climbed up onto the street quickly. He shouted at the baby crocodile, "Don't you want my heart? Well, catch!" The monkey threw(扔) the big stone at the crocodile.

    Why here are thousands of people including lots of the old and the young, climbing the Fenghuang Mountain. Because there is a famous festival in Dazhou, which called Yuanjiu Mountain Climbing festival.(元九登高节) This festival is related with a poet as well as an official in Tang Dynasty. His name was Yuan Zhen and people called him Yuan Jiu later. In A. D. 815, Yuan Zhen did something wrong with his job, so he was sent to Tongzhou, which was a poor and remote place in ancient China. He didn't give   ❶  and made lots of projects to promote (促进) the economic development.   ❷   the leadership of him, Tongzhou changed a lot.①因此人们喜爱他. Because he did such an excellent job, he was transferred to Henan in A.D.818.The day when he left was the ninth day of the first lunar month. All the town people climbed onto the top of Cuiping Mountain in the South and the Fenghuang Mountain in the North to say goodbye to him. ② From then on, the custom and tradition of climbing hills on the day of "Yuanjiu" has been kept in Dazhou. To remember Yuan Zhen, all people in Dazhou go out in groups and climb hills on that day. People are looking forward to getting rid of the bad luck in the past year, hoping in the next year everything is going well. To show great respect for the public customs and opinions, every year our government plans a series of activities to promote the influence of Yuanjiu Mountain Climbing Festival. Nowadays, ③Dawhou, more, feeling, and, people, more, cultural charm (魅力), are, of, even the tourists and foreign friends are attracted to take part in such traditional activities. I take pride in Dazhou.

    Maybe you are an average(普通的) student. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} However, this is not necessarily so. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how.

    Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, ect. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment (娱乐). A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

    Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

    Make good use of your time in class. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

    Study regularly(有规律地). When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you'll remember it longer.

    Develop a good attitude (态度) towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. Then help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be over worried.

    Making the Right Choice Once you decide to study overseas, you have to make some choices. To choose the right country or school, ask yourself：Where do I want to go and why？How much do I want to pay？How long do I want to study overseas？Do I want to live with a host family, with roommates, or alone？

    Getting Ready to Go Get your passport and visa(签证)early！Before you go, learn some of the language, and read about some common customs in your host country. Learn about the money. Bring some of it, and a credit card(信用卡)with you.

    Once You Are There After the first few weeks overseas, many students will feel a little homesick. They may miss their family, friends, and familiar(熟悉的)ways of doing things. Remember that it takes time to get used to a new place, school, and culture. When you feel sad or homesick, try to talk to others, or write about your feelings in a notebook.
