Do you like traveling? Have you heard of the volunteer travel? Do you know what the volunteer travel means?

The main purpose of the volunteer travel is to take part in service activities to help others. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide service like teaching, cooking and animal caring. The volunteers may get free or discounted accommodation (住宿折扣), meals and laundry(洗衣), activities, or classes because of their help.

It seems that these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transport. However, the volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s, when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.

Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. But now, more volunteer trips have taken place within the volunteers' own countries in recent years. Volunteer projects in the countryside are now attracting more visitors living in the cities as a break from the fast and stressful city lives.

    ▲  By doing voluntary work while traveling, travelers may have a real and positive influence on the world. The service volunteers provide can reduce the costs for the communities they serve. Another advantage of volunteer travel is that it helps people living in cities experience the lives in the countryside. For those who are tired of city lives but can't move to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a way. In this way, travelers can relax themselves from their busy lives, while the countryside can get a lot by receiving more customers for local tourism industries.

About 90% of the population in the world is right-handed, But according to a report, lots of famous people are left-handed. For example, American presidents such as George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are left-handed. So are Leonardo da Vinci , Bill Gates, Seven Jobs and so on. What does that mean? Are left-handed people smarter than the right-handed?

To answer this question, scientists studied 2,300 right-handed and left-handed students between the ages 6 and 17 in Italy. The students were asked to work out some math problems. There was no difference when they looked at the easier math problems. But left-handed students did better at the more difficult problems.

In fact, left-handedness has not always been seen in such a positive way. In the pamphlet(小册子) The Prevention and Correction of left-handedness in children written by J.W. Conway in 1936, left-handedness was described as a serious " lillness".

Prejudices(偏见)against left-handed people are built into our language. To be someone's " right-hand man" is good. It means you are a person who can help a lot.

But having "two left feet" or receiving a " left-handed compliment(赞扬)" is bad. The word itself comes from the old English. "lyft" mean weak or broken. These prejudices not only appear in English. The French word for left is "gauche" which means "awkward(笨拙的)"， while "droite", the French word for right , means "clever".

There are many things that you should be careful with when you are alone at home. Read the following tips to protect yourself.

First, Keep the door locked when you are alone at home. Many people think it's the best way to {#blank#}1{#/blank#}themselves. Second, Keep a list of phone numbers to call for help, such as 110, the police station or a neighbour's number. Third, be careful with the electrical appliances. If you don't know how to use them, ask your parents. Make a safety check {#blank#}2{#/blank#}going to sleep. Finally, Look through the keyhole when you hear the doorbell. If there are strangers, ask "Who's that?" with the door locked and say "Come back{#blank#}3{#/blank#}" Don't tell them that your parents are away. Say "Mum's having a shower." Or "Dad's having a sleep." To ignore the doorbell is not a good idea because sometimes bad people ring doorbells to see {#blank#}4{#/blank#}anyone's at home.

Suppose you are in London and trying to find the bus to take you to Hyde Park(海德公园). This should be easy. But if you can't speak the language, it can be a problem. What will you do?{#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

Many people ask me what my favorite invention is. I find it very hard to answer them, because there are so many things in my life that I can choose. However, I have chosen a pen. Don't you think it's surprising?

I know that to most people a pen is very boring, but, to me, it stands for possibility(可能). There are so many things you can do with a pen. You can write a novel or a song, record information, or draw a picture.

A pen is like the beginning of something amazing to me. Every day, I write a new page with my pen, and I am slowly making a path(路) for my future. Maybe I will be a scientist and change the world with my discoveries. Maybe I'll become a musician and touch people's hearts with my music. Or perhaps I will be a writer and move people through words, or a teacher to help children grow into the kind of people that they want to be.

Our dog Max ate a plastic bag by accident. So my family and I rushed to the Emergency Vet(兽医诊所) at midnight. It nearly {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(杀死) Max. However, this is not the only case. In fact, thousands of {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(动物) lose their lives every year because they eat plastic bags. 

Plastic pollution is a {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(严重的) problem. We must take some {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(步骤；措施) to fight against it. The project "Say No To Plastic Bags" is a good try. When you go shopping, take your cloth bag and say no to plastic bags when they are {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(提供) to you. By refusing plastic bags, you are also {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(减少) the amount of plastic bags being produced. This action also means that {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(更少的) plastic bags need to be made. 

If you have to use plastic bags, try to {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(再次使用) them when you can. When they no longer have any use, please {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(回收利用) them. They can be changed into things that will be given back to our community, like outdoor furniture for schools.
