In the United States, headmasters and teachers discipline(惩戒) students in several ways. The teacher often writes or {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the student's parents. Sometimes students have to stay at {#blank#}2{#/blank#}for an extra hour. If a student behaves {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, the headmaster can suspend (勒令…休学) the student. The student cannot come to school for one, two, or three days, Sometimes, when the headmaster suspends some students, they are {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. "A three-day vacation!" they thought.

    Mr Lazares, a headmaster, didn't like to suspend students. When the boy who was not behaving well in class was sent to his {#blank#}5{#/blank#}, Mr Lazares telephoned the boy's parents. "If you come to school with your son, I won't {#blank#}6{#/blank#} him having classes," he said. The boy's father came to school and went with his son to every {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. Other students stared at the boy and his father. The boy was embarrassed. After that, he behaved better.  He didn't want his father to come to school {#blank#}8{#/blank#}. Other students behaved better, too. They thought, "I don't want my {#blank#}9{#/blank#}to come to school!"

    That year, about 60 parents came to school with children who didn't behave well. The next year, {#blank#}10{#/blank#}parents had to come to school. The students were behaving better.

    Captain Joseph Mackey's airplane was flying over the ocean on its way to Great Britain when engine trouble started. He turned back and made a crash-landing at night in the deep snow of Newfoundland, All the men in the plane were killed except Captain Mackey who was badly hurt.

    Captain Mackey waited all the next morning for an airplane to come{#blank#}1{#/blank#}him. In the afternoon he set out to find help. He went about a mile but found that he was too weak to go on through the snow. Half walking and half{#blank#}2{#/blank#}, he made his way back to the plane.

    The second day many planes passed above him, but none of the pilots saw him. In his plane was a flask(长颈瓶)of aluminum(铝)powder. He poured this on a huge stone to make the stone shine, but the wind blew it off.

    The third day Captain Mackey heard a plane coming nearer, flying very low. It flew right over him and passed on. Then he gave up hope of being found. In a few minutes the plane returned, and the pilot dipped(稍微降低) one wing to get a{#blank#}3{#/blank#}view. He had seen the aluminum powder blown by the wind on the snow.

    The pilot came for a better look, and then he saw Captain Mackey{#blank#}4{#/blank#} his arms. Jim Allison, the pilot, was an old friend. Allison quickly climbed higher and sent a radio message. In a short time a plane came and dropped a sleeping bag, food, medicine and tools for Captain Mackey. Later two men arrived with a sled to rescue him.
