The ancient wisdom of Confucius is timeless. His thinking (lead) the Chinese for thousands of years. However, English teaching seems to be one place  his wisdom is forgotten.

I came to China 6 years ago, and quickly saw the plight (困境) of so many students  (struggle) to learn English. They know a lot “about” English, they never master the language. They learned far more grammar than students in Western cultures and almost no oral training. They were made (recite) sentences and passages from their books. Their teachers were spending 90% of the class talking to them “about” English in Chinese.

All effective language teaching in the world is built the basis of oral language. Students who excel in English are those that follow the wisdom of Confucius: they use language!

They use it primarily by speaking and listening, (eventual) supplemented (补充) by reading and writing. Every language is taught by gaining speaking competence long before grammar, reading and writing  (introduce).

Chinese students work so hard they learned English with correct spoken instructions and classroom practice, they would have the  (high) English scores in the world and they would conquer English.

Mr. Robinson had to travel somewhere on business. As he was{#blank#}1{#/blank#}a hurry, he decided to go by air. He liked sitting beside a window when he was flying, {#blank#}2{#/blank#}when he got onto the plane, he looked for a window seat. He found all of them already {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(take) except one. There was a soldier sitting in the seat beside {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Wondering why this one had not been taken, Mr. Robinson at once went towards it.

When he reached it, however, Mr. Robinson saw that there was a notice stuck on the seat. It said, “This seat{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(keep) for proper load balance, thank you.” Because he had never seen such a kind of{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(usual) notice in a plane before, Mr. Robinson was a little surprised. But he thought that the plane must be carrying something {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(particular) heavy in it, so he walked on and found{#blank#}8{#/blank#}empty seat, not beside a window, to sit in.

Two or three people tried to sit in the window seat beside the soldier, but they too read the notice and went on. When the plane was nearly full, a very pretty girl hurried into the plane. The soldier,{#blank#}9{#/blank#}was watching the passengers coming in, quickly took the notice off the seat beside his and in this way succeeded in having the company of a{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(beautiful) during the whole trip.

Chinese has overtaken French, Spanish and German to become one of the most popular foreign languages for jobseekers in the UK. Research shows graduates in Chinese earn {#blank#}1{#/blank#}average yearly salary of £31,000 or{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(much).

"I had a lot of friends on other courses {#blank#}3{#/blank#}didn't do much in first or second year. But for Chinese majors, you have to spend hours and hours{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(write) characters," says Hannah Jackson, who graduated in Chinese Studies from Sheffield University in 2012.

Hannah describes her course as "majorly intense". "Most of my friends admitted to crying in the first week owing {#blank#}5{#/blank#}the course intensity (强度). I was almost told at one point that I might want to reconsider and drop out."

"The degree is{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(absolute) worth it. The efforts{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(pay) off so far. I like that I could live, work and operate with relative ease in China. Looking around at people who have studied French or Spanish at university, I find there's no such chance{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(use) what they've learned in the workplace," Hannah says.

Hannah went to look for a job in Shanghai, where she found more employment{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(opportunity). After working as a project manager for Intralink Group for four years, she set up{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(she) own company earning £5,000 a day. She has now returned to the UK and works in business development for the Body Shop.
