As a student, what does it mean " to be good"? TheCode of Conduct for Primary and Middle School Students (《中小学生守则》) holds the answer.

    Last year, a new draft (草案) code came{#blank#}1{#/blank#}, replacing the old content. There are some important {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Big phrases like"have deep love for your motherland, the people and the Communist Party of China" are not there anymore. The new code tells students to respect the national flag and national emblem (国徽){#blank#}3{#/blank#}. It also {#blank#}4{#/blank#}students to "know about China's history".

    Also, the new code asks students to "lead alow-carbon (低碳的){#blank#}5{#/blank#}"，"takepart in voluntary work"， and "control the time you spend online". The change on brave actions {#blank#}6{#/blank#}draws attention. The old code told students to act bravely when they saw people {#blank#}7{#/blank#}rules. But the new code asks students to learn to protect {#blank#}8{#/blank#}and ask for help.

    Many teachers are {#blank#}9{#/blank#}to see these changes. Students say they know{#blank#}10{#/blank#}to do when they face some problems.

    Summer was coming and it was getting hotter. Mrs. King got {#blank#}1{#/blank#} early one morning and went to the market after she {#blank#}2{#/blank#} （have） breakfast. She knew that everything was cheap there before eight o'clock. She wanted to buy many {#blank#}3{#/blank#} （vegetable） for her family.     I never saw my father home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a "night out with the boys". He had no{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (hobby) but just took care of his family.

    For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 am. He was always {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (interest)in my life—how my family as doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (English) or Florida.

    The morning on Sunday, January 16, 1996, my father telephoned me as {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (usually), this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.

    The call came at 4:40 am. That day my father {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (send)to hospital in Florida, I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed(发誓)that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him and {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (real)get to know him.

    I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, but my father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.

    In the years since his {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (die) I have learnt much about my father, and even more about myself. As a father, he never asked me for anything but my time. Now he has all my attention, every single day.

    One Saturday afternoon, my daughter Alice asked me, "Are all people the same even {#blank#}1{#/blank#} they are different in color?" I thought for a minute and then I said, "I'll explain to you if we can make {#blank#}2{#/blank#}quick stop at the grocery store. I have something interesting to show you." At the grocery store, we {#blank#}3{#/blank#} some apples: red, green and yellow ones. Back home, I told Alice, "It's time to answer your question." I put one apple of each kind on the table. Then I looked at Alice, who had a strange look on her {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

    People are like apples. They come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. Some of the apples may not even look like the others. As I was talking, Alice was examining each one {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Then, I took each of the apples and peeled {#blank#}6{#/blank#} with a knife, placing them back on the table, but in a different place. "Okay, Alice, tell me which is which." She said, "That's {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. They all look the same now." "Take a bite of each one and taste. See if that {#blank#}8{#/blank#}you decide which one is which." Smile came across her face, "People are just like apples! They are all different, but once you take {#blank#}9{#/blank#}the outside, they're pretty much the same on the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}."

    She totally got it. I didn't need to say or do anything else.
