Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian were on a trip to Canada to visit their cousins on the Atlantic coast. They also learned that most Canadians live within a few hundred kilometers of the USA border and that Canada's population is only {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(slight)over thirty million, but now they {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(amaze)to see such an empty country. Then they arrived in {#blank#}10{#/blank#}urban area, the busy port city of Thunder Bay at the top of the Great Lakes.

    While there are {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(amaze) stories of instant transformation (转变)，for most of us the {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(change) are gradual and require a lot of effort and work, like cleaning up a polluted river. Just be {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(patience).

    In order to know a foreign language thoroughly, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must understand the language when we hear{#blank#}1{#/blank#}spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it correctly with confidence and without hesitation.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (three), we must be able to read the language, and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are grammatically correct.

There is no easy way to success {#blank#}3{#/blank#}language learning. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}good memory is of great help, but it is not enough only {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(memorize) rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long a list of words and {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(they) meaning, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(satisfy) with only a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. ＂Learn through use＂ is a good piece of {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(advise) for those {#blank#}9{#/blank#}are studying a new language. Practice is important. We must practice speaking and {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(write) the language whenever we can.

    Coffee is the smell of childhood at my grandma's house, and the{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(pleasure) smell spread the house as she told me {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(story) of being a migrant from Europe after the war — she always said she found not having real coffee {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(hard) than learning English.     I don't very often have a full day off work. Today I did. I had a leisurely morning, going to the gym, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(walk) the dog, feeding my friend's cat, and thought I would hurry into the office at Job number 2, to fill in my time sheet so I would {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (pay) for the hours I have worked. I was thinking that I had worked less hours because the lady I share job with was working instead {#blank#}3{#/blank#} me. I prayed then, that somehow we would have {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (much) money coming in this month and imagined money coming in to my bank account.

    I arrived at the office to see the main secretary looking very pale. She asked what my afternoon {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (plan) were, when I said I had the afternoon free she asked me {#blank#}6{#/blank#} I could work for her, as she had really hurt her back. I was really looking forward to a day off, but she looked in such pain that I said yes straight away. She did a quick handover of what{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(be) urgent and needed to be done.

    I raced home and got {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(change) into work appropriate clothes and took over. Our boss phoned and thanked me for steeping in so that everything went {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(smooth). Thee unwell person went home, and I got four hours extra pay. It's amazing how {#blank#}10{#/blank#}universe works.
