There are many great heroes in the world. For example, Gandhi, an Indian {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(nation) hero, was respected as the father of the Indian nation. He has been beloved by the Indians.

    He was born in India in 1869. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(Follow) the local custom, he got married at the age of 13. In 1888 he sailed to England, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} he studied law for three years and became a lawyer. On his return to India, he was sent to South Africa to work on a law case.

    In South Africa,{#blank#}4{#/blank#}surprised him most was that the problem of racial discrimination (种族歧视) was serious. There he formed an {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(organize) and started a magazine to fight for equal rights.

    Gandhi returned to India in 1915, when India was controlled by the British. Under his {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(guide), the Indians {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(devote) to fighting for an end to the British rule and independence for their country. In the political movement, many Indians,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (include) Gandhi, were put in prison. However, they struggled bravely without hesitation. The British government had to give {#blank#}9{#/blank#} and India won its independence in 1947.{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (fortunate) Gandhi was shot by an Indian who opposed his views and died on January 30th, 1948.

Then he saw the dog {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (walk) towards him. The dog stopped by the car and barked. The man opened the car and let him in. The dog sat beside {#blank#}9{#/blank#} and kept the man warm. At last, a car came and the man {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (save). He went back home, with the dog, of course.

    Do you ever throw away food at home? Have you ever thought about {#blank#}1{#/blank#} happens to the food that shops and supermarkets don't sell? Well, you might be shocked {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (find) out that nearly one third of the food {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (produce) by food industry gets wasted. What's more, around 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead {#blank#}4{#/blank#} healthy life.

    Many people in the UK are trying to do something about this imbalance and make use {#blank#}5{#/blank#} thrown-out food that is edible (可食用的). For example, there is a cafe in Leeds whose meals are created using unsold food from supermarkets, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (include) a lot of vegetables, fruit, fish and other items.     More cafes like this are being opened in other parts of the UK such as Bristol and Manchester, and it is now becoming a worldwide tendency. Also, new law should {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (pass), so that supermarkets don't throw away so much perfectly good food!

    My doorbell rings at 11 am. On the step, I find an elderly Chinese lady holding the hand of a little boy. In her other hand {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (be) a paper bag. She is the little boy's grandmother, and her daughter, Nicole, bought {#blank#}2{#/blank#} house next door last October. Nicole has {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (obvious) told her mother that I am having a heart operation shortly, and the result is that her mother has decided {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (supply) me with meals.

She pointed to the screen, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} showed a message from her daughter telling me that her mother wanted to know {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the food was all right for me.

So here we are, two grandmothers, neither of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (we) able to speak the other's language but communicating one way or another (with some help from technology). The doorbell keeps {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (ring) and there is the familiar brown paper bag, handed smilingly to me.

    If you have ever taken a handwritten prescription from a doctor or looked at the notes from your visit, it seems like no amount of squinting(眯眼) could help the letters get clearer. Bad handwriting almost seems like a{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(require) for graduating from medical school. But it's not the fact{#blank#}2{#/blank#}only people with bad handwriting{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(attract) to the medical field. If so, why does it happen to doctors?

Anything you talk about behind closed doors needs written evidence for your medical history. Doctors have to write more than any other employee, for {#blank#}5{#/blank#}they can hardly write letters clearly.

    Long days plus tons of writing leads{#blank#}6{#/blank#}a very tired hand. If doctors could spend an hour{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(deal) with every patient, they might be able to slow down and give their{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(hand)a rest. But the truth is that most physicians are rushing around to the next patient. With so many patients to see in a{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(limit) time, doctors are{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(concerned) about getting the information down than perfecting their handwriting.
