Frank was a curious boy. The first time he saw an hourglass(沙漏),he wondered what it was.

His mother said,”An hourglass is made in the s   {#blank#}1{#/blank#}   of 8. The sand is put in at one end,and runs through a small hole in the m {#blank#}2{#/blank#}  . It takes the sand exactly an hour to run through.”

Frank  w {#blank#}3{#/blank#}  the little stream of sand. He was i {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ,because it would not run faster. ‘Let me shake it,mother,”said he,”it is lazy,and will never get through.”

“It will,Son,”said his mother, “The sand moves little by little,but it moves all the time. When you look at the hands of the clock, you think they go very s  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}   , but they never stop. While you are at play,the sand is r  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}  , grain by grain. The hands of the clock are moving,second by second. At night,the sand in the hourglass has run through twelve times. The hour hand of the clock has moved a {#blank#}7{#/blank#} its great face. That is because they keep working every minute. They do not stop to t  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} how much they have to do and how long it will take them to do it.”

Now, Frank's mother wanted him to learn a little poem,but he said,‘Mother,I can never learn i {#blank#}9{#/blank#} ,”His mother said,”Study all the time.N {#blank#}10{#/blank#} stop to ask how long it will take to learn it.”

Frank followed his mother's advice. He studied line after line,very busily; and in one and a half hours he knew the poem perfectly.

    “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy(财富) and wise (智慧).”

    This is an old English saying (谚语)．Did you hear of it? It means that we must go to bed early and {#blank#}1{#/blank#} up early in the morning．Then we will keep {#blank#}2{#/blank#}．We'll also be rich and clever.

    This is true．The body must have {#blank#}3{#/blank#} sleep to be healthy．Children of young age should have ten {#blank#}4{#/blank#} sleep every day．Children who don't have enough sleep can't do their work very well．They won't be clever and they may not become rich!

    The body also needs {#blank#}5{#/blank#}．Walking, running, jumping, swimming and playing games are all exercise．Exercise the body strong(强壮).

    Exercise also helps the blood(血) to {#blank#}6{#/blank#} around inside the body．This is very important．Our blood {#blank#}7{#/blank#} food to all parts(部分) of our body．The head also needs blood． Exercise helps us to think{#blank#}8{#/blank#}.

    Mr Brown's horse was lost at night. All of his friends were very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to hear that and came to see him together. After {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（听） his story, one of them said, “Why didn't you close the door of the stable(马厩) last night?” “You aren't a deaf man”, the second said. “Didn't you {#blank#}3{#/blank#}anything at that moment? The thief(小偷) must {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(赶走) the horse away out of the gate, and couldn't carry it on {#blank#}5{#/blank#} back.” “I agree with you,” said the third man. “How {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(careful) you are!     Doing sports is good for our health. Do you like sports? {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (哪一个) sport do you like best? My favorite sport is riding a bicycle. Why do I like bike riding? The main {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (原因) is that I like to go to different places. When I'm {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (空闲的), I often ask a few friends to go bike riding.     Children grow quickly, especially their feet. But many families, cannot a{#blank#}1{#/blank#} new shoes when a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites（寄生虫）from the soil.

    An American man has a s{#blank#}2{#/blank#}． for those barefoot kids – a shoe that grows with the child. Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it is able to last so long.

     “It grows in three places: the front, the side and the back with the child. It can last up to five years. The b{#blank#}3{#/blank#} is compressed（压缩的）rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather.”

    The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14. Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a v{#blank#}4{#/blank#} in an orphanage in Kenya. “… and there was a little girl in a white dress walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. And she had to c{#blank#}5{#/blank#} open the front of her shoes to let her toes（脚趾）stick out. At that time I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?” However, Lee says it was i{#blank#}6{#/blank#} to turn his idea into a reality at that time. “Yet I kept writing down I should do this because of this or because of that. All these reasons why it really was important for me to try to make the shoes grow are to try to help them.” Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. Together, they have sent over 50,000 pairs of shoes to 70 countries. Lee says a pair shoes gives a child self-worth and more chances to succeed b{#blank#}7{#/blank#} much protection.
