David Gill might be the richest man in Sebastopol, California. The semi-retired health care officer is banking the most valuable currency (货币) in the world—TIME. Gill has 480 hours saved at the local time bank.

In brief, a time bank does with time what other banks do with money: It stores and trades it. "Time banking means that for every hour you give to your community, you receive an hour credit (积分)," explains Krista Wyatt, a director of the nonprofit TimeBanks. Org, which helps volunteers set up local time banks all over the world.

Nobody knows the exact number, but thousands of time banks with several hundred thousand members have been set up in at least 37 countries, including China, Malaysia, Japan, Senegal, Argentina, Brazil and in Europe, with over 3.2 million exchanges. There are probably more than 40,000 members in over 500 time banks in the US.

In Sebastopol, 250 local people have time bank accounts (账户) where they save and withdraw hours as needed. For example, Gill likes to offer his advice and help with computer programming, editing and financial (经济的) planning. In return, he asks for help when he needs a ride to the airport or someone to transport heavy furniture. The time banks are building social capital (资本). "I've made wonderful friends I wouldn't have met otherwise and we now invite each other to our garden parties," says Gill. "It's about making community and being a part of the community. You can't put a price on that."

David Gill came to the time bank like most of his neighbors. He doesn't remember where he first heard about it a few years ago, but he immediately thought it was a great idea. He signed up, started using it, and when the founders asked for help, he stepped up. He gets paid in the currency he values most: hours.

Time banks are a valuable resource for building social capital and supporting aging populations. They allow people to contribute to their community and receive help in return, creating a stronger, more connected society.

Romain Rolland once said, "There is only one kind of heroism (英雄主义) in the world, and that is to still love life after recognizing the truth of life." Cai Lei, a patient with ALS (渐冻症), perfectly 1 this sentence.

Cai Lei was once the vice president of Jingdong Group, 2 a good job, and a happy family.

But who would have thought that at the 3 of 41, he was diagnosed with ALS and could only watch his body "frozen" 4 he could not breathe.

Many traditional Chinese festivals remind us of the special foods. As zongzi are to Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes are to Mid-Autumn Festival, yuanxiao—sweet dumplings made of sticky rice flour—are special to Lantern Festival.

Lantern Festival usually falls on the 15^th of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Spring Festival celebrations. Apart from the round-shaped yuanxiao, another beloved part of the celebration is the lanterns, which come in almost every possible size and shape.

"Guessing lantern riddles(谜语)" is an essential(必不可少的) part of the festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have answers to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answers. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The activity emerged(出现) during people's enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty(960–1279). As riddle guessing was interesting and full of wisdom, it became popular among all social strata(阶层).

Lantern Festival was at its peak in the Tang and Song dynasties. It was a day of great fun at the time. In the evening, people went into the streets with all kinds of lanterns, watching lion or dragon dances, eating yuanxiao and setting off firecrackers.

The festival also provided a chance for unmarried young girls to go out freely in search of their true love, since they weren't normally allowed to do so. The famous poet Ouyang Xiu recorded this romantic tradition with the well-known line:"Atop the willow tree hangs the moon;my date comes in the evening soon."

Do you know that vocabulary is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if your grammar is not completely perfect.

However, one common problem is leaning new words and then forgetting them. So, when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can't remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying word lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don't have a very good memory.

The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Each time you learn anew word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition(释义). You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.

Imagine you just learn the word "generous", write in your vocabulary notebook: generous(adjective), definition-giving or willing to give freely. Example One, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner, you're very generous. Example Two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It's best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It's helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps-writing the word and using it at once-help you remember and use new words.
