    The harder we try, the happier our life will be!

    It is hard to imagine how a person is to spend the whole life when only the head and hands are able to move.

    Xu Ruiyang, an 18-year-old student from Kunming, has suffered (遭受) from spina muscular atrophy (脊柱肌肉萎缩)1she was 2 years old. At that time, the doctor said that most children with spinal muscular atrophy will only live a few years.

    The family did not give up, or even just2. To help Xu Ruiyang live with dignity (尊严), her parents 3her living and learning skills strictly. Opening a book or raising hands, some very easy actions for common people,4, are big challenges for Xu. She had to use her head or5to work together with hands to finish these actions.

    In Xu's opinion, her sunny and self-confident13comes from the love of her parents.

    "If we are not able to make her live longer, we can make her life wider," said Xu's father. They travelled across China and more than 20 14 over the world, including Italy, Thailand and Singapore. During these trips, she developed an interest in learning a 15language. "I think it's cool to learn about other countries' culture and express your feelings to others," said Xu.

    Last June, she finished China's Gaokao and received an offer from Sichuan International Study University.

   Mrs Wilson, the middle-aged wife of a rich businessman, invited some of herfriends to lunch. She was very anxious to try a new way of cooking a fish dish,and she was very pleased with herself when the dish was ready. As the dish was very1, she put it near the open window to cool it for a few minutes.2,five minutes later, when she came back for it, she was frightened to find her neighbour'scat, Chester, at the dish. Luckily she was3to stop the cat from eatingthe fish. That afternoon was a great success and everyone enjoyed the dish verymuch.

She was in an armchair just near the window, whenthrough the window she was surprised to see the neighbour's cat5inthe garden. Why, the fish dish must be poisonous (有毒的). What would happento her friends? She at once phoned the family doctor for advice. The doctor toldher to telephone each of the visitors to meet him at the hospital as soon as possible.Finally, the danger was6. Once again Mrs Wilson was alone in herarmchair in the living room, still tired but7happy.Just then, the phone rang. It was her neighbour. "Oh, Millie, her neighbourcried, "Chester is dead. She was killed by someone in the car and thrown inyour garden. "

Two brothers planned a two- day trip in a forest and soon they were lost. They were far from home. But they knew how to camp. The older brother went to look for firewood (木柴). The younger brother went to look for food and water, but he could not find anything. He was very tired, so he sat down to have a rest. 

He noticed a bird in the tree next to him. Then he heard a voice, "I know where your parents are! I know where your parents are!"

Wondering who was talking, the boy looked around. He got so confused (迷惑的) when he saw nobody. Then he heard the words again. Suddenly, he came to know that the bird was talking to him!

The young boy looked at the bird. He said, "Can you really help us get home?"

She said, "Yes, I can. I know the village you live in. I can take you back there. I only ask for three insects (昆虫) to eat. That will give me the strength (力气) to guide you home."

The young boy quickly agreed to feed the bird and ran back to his camp as fast as he could to tell his older brother about it. His older brother did not believe him at first. Slowly he agreed to go with him and met the talking bird. 

They found three insects for the bird. The bird swallowed (吞下) them quickly. "We will leave in the morning," she said. 

The next morning, the boys followed the bird home. It took them many days. When the boys got home, they and their parents were very happy to see each other again. The parents had been sad since the boys left. The family decided that they would always feed hungry birds. 

When Emily Cummins was a teenager, her grandfather had an illness — a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had difficulty getting toothpaste(牙膏) out of the tube(管). She made an invention that helped him with this, and won the Young Engineer for Britain Award for her toothpaste dispenser(自动取物器). 

A few years later, Emily learnt that some African countries are short of water. The women and children there often walk many kilometres a day to get water for their villages. They usually put the buckets(桶) on their heads. They have to walk carefully so as not to waste the water. Emily's invention is a simple water carrier. It makes it possible for the women to transport up to five buckets of water each time. 

Her latest project is a simple fridge that runs without electricity, but only needs the energy that comes from the sun. There are now thousands of families in villages in Zambia, Namibia and South Africa who use it. 

Emily has already won several prizes for her inventions and was named one of the world's top ten young people. And Emily often visits schools and talks to teenagers. She wants to encourage them to come up with new ideas that make the world a better place. 

The English Language Assistants program（英语语言助理课程）is very famous in the UK. Every year，it sends many language teachers to support the teaching of English in other places around the world. I took part in the program last year and spent six months in a small town called Privas（普里瓦）in France. 

The small town lies in the southeast of France. It is a beautiful place. And it's famous for its chestnuts（栗子）. Lots of chestnuts are produced there every year. There is even a festival about chestnuts. People from Privas have a strong sense of belonging. On weekends，young people who live a busy life in nearby cities often come back to Privas to get together with their family. 

The quiet environment and comfortable lifestyle（生活方式）made me fall in love with Privas. The school where I taught was a great place to learn about French culture. I learned some special French customs there. 

People greet each other by kissing on the cheek（脸颊）. The number of kisses depends on where you are in France. On my first night in Privas，I stayed with a host family. They told me that in most places in France，people give two. In the north of France，they give four kisses. And in Privas，the custom is to give three. This made me sometimes wonder which cheek to kiss first. Since I had long hair，when a person was kissing me，some of my hair would end up in his or her mouth. That was really funny and awkward（令人尴尬的）. But people there were pleased that I was getting used to the local culture. 

Six months of staying there made me feel like part of the town. It was an unforgettable experience and I can't wait to return there some day.
