Many people say that they are working too many hours. They don't have enough time to relax or to stay with their family.

    Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1, 646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2, 159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works 513 more hours a year than a French worker.

    Why do people work so many hours？Some people work extra hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies don't pay overtime. Their workers don't get more pay for more work. Some people think it's their duty to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don't work more hours.

    Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers used all their vacation days. In Great Britain, there is a saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull(迟钝的) boy. "If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.

When I was twelve, I wrote the first note to my mother, "Hi, Mom! Have a nice day! Love, Marie! ", and I folded the note into her change purse(零钱包) . 

My mother worked as a cleaner in a clothing factory. I knew that when she bought meals in the dining hall, she would have to look for change in her purse. I didn't know that she would keep that note, and always carry it with her. 

From the day that I carefully folded the small piece of paper into my mother's change purse. ____. They would be put in the fridge, under a lamp, or beside the TV set. I even found one hidden in my shoe. From the outside, our notes may have been general records of our days, ideas and wishes. But to my mother and me, they were a lifeline—a special communication with each other that no one else shared. 

On October 20, 2009, my mother died after a long illness. I stood near her bed, holding her hand. I didn't cry the day my mom died, and I didn't cry a week later when I went to collect her things. I was so thankful that she no longer had aches and pains. 

Recently, I found a note that my mom had left me. It had been hidden in the pages of my favorite childhood book for years. It read, "Dear Marie, I love you always. Miss you a lot. Don't forget me. Be happy! Love, Mom" That day, I cried. 

One year, a British expedition（探险队）got lost in the Sahara Desert（撒哈拉沙漠）. The sun was burning hot. Everyone quickly ran out of {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. If they made a wrong decision, then they could all {#blank#}2{#/blank#} soon. 

At this time, the leader took out a water kettle （壶）and said, "I found a kettle of water in my bag. But before we pass through the desert, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} is allowed to drink it." The kettle of water {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the faith（信心）for everyone to cross the desert. . 

Finally, the expedition made it out of the desert. With tears of joy, they opened the kettle with shaking {#blank#}5{#/blank#} —but sand not water! 

Was it a kettle of sand that {#blank#}6{#/blank#} saved them in the desert? The answer is no. Their deep faith in the hope of survival（生存）, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} a seed（种子）, had taken root（植根）and grown in their hearts. That is what led them out of the {#blank#}8{#/blank#} situation in the end. 

In fact, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} hard time you face, as long as there is a seed of faith in your heart, don't give up {#blank#}10{#/blank#} , then you'll succeed（成功）.

It's seven o'clock. Jenny gets up at seven and puts on her clothes, then she has a delicious breakfast. After breakfast she makes her room tidy. Her mother usually does it for her, but she is doing that now. 

After morning lessons, Jenny has lunch at school. She eats with her best friends and they talk about all kinds of things. Stars are always their favourite topic (话题). 

In the afternoon it's time to play different sports, such as football, basketball, table tennis and so on. Jenny likes sports and she likes playing basketball best. She goes home at 4: 00 p. m. Her parents come back from work at 6:30 p. m. It takes them about half an hour to get home. Jenny does her homework first and then she listens to music or watches TV. 

Dinner time is about 7:30 p. m. Jenny helps her mother make dinner. After dinner, Jenny's father cleans the room. Jenny and her mother help him. Every evening, Jenny tells her parents interesting things at school. She tells them some interesting stories, too. She likes talking with her family. Her family always have a nice evening like that. 

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days,a brush was made from camels'(骆驼) hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some hair from the family cat to make a brush.

The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more hair. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin had to tell his father what he had been doing.

The cat's lot was about to improve. That year,one of Benjamin's cousins,Mr.Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed (印象深刻) with Benjamin's drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes as well as six paintings by an artist, which were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes that Benjamin had ever seen

In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his talent. He asked Benjamin's parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.

In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two books on painting to take home. The books were long and boring. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said that those two books stayed with him by day, and under his head at night. While it was likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
