Why Live Near the River?

Imagine pioneers traveling west in the 1800s. In those days, it was hard to find running water and shops where to buy things. As time went by, most pioneers had to make their homes near a river so that they could get water easily.

How did rivers help people live in the past?

Back in the pioneer days, people grew their own food, caught their own fish, and collected their own water.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}People also used rivers as roads, traveling on boats. Traders shipped goods (货物) to people from other areas.

When building many factories right next to rivers for the water's power to make machines work, some people choose to live near a river for working. They use the river to ship large goods, and some of them work at these factories where power factories provide electricity for homes and businesses.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Who wouldn't want to live near a river?

Some people are nervous about living near rivers because rivers can cause floods (洪水). Every once in a while, floodwaters rise higher than a house, ruining (毁坏) many things in the house.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Such waste causes water to smell bad and pollutes the crops (作物) we eat. Water and crops in polluted areas can make people very sick.

How do people decide where to live?

 {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Rivers can provide jobs and fun activities in a beautiful place. However, those living by rivers should be willing to accept possible problems as well.

Mr. Watson's store sold many different things. Every day, Jess came to the store and he loved to look at the pipes. One pipe especially caught his eye. He imagined that some day he would be a grown man and could smoke a pipe, just like his father that he didn't remember.

Jess reached out and touched the pipe. He kept thinking that when he was old enough, he would go to work and his mother could stay home. He would not have to wait three hours after school until she came.home from her job. Oh, why? He wondered, did it take so long to grow up and take his father's place.

He looked around the store and put the bowl of the pipe in his hand. He just wanted to get the feel of it- nothing more.

Suddenly, he heard footsteps behind him. He turned around quickly. It was Mr. Watson, the friendly store owner.

"Hello, Jess," Mr. Watson smiled, and kept on walking. Jess struggled to answer but could not get his voice up. He swallowed and smiled back weakly.

The store seemed extremely warm. Jess watched his feet begin to move and take him out of the store. Like sleepwalking, he moved towards the ground. He looked around and saw the empty swing. Sitting on the swing, a sharp pain caught him in the stomach. He knew it was the pipe he felt. He had walked out of the store with it!

The sun was slipping down through the trees and it was time to go home. His mother would look at him and she would know. She always knew. A bot tear ran down his cheek. She trusted him. He remembered the nice way she said, "You're a little man now, Jess." Her trust in him was all he could think about now. The pipe and its magic power meant nothing. His dream of growing up meant nothing.

Looking at the long shadows of the trees coming towards him, Jess now knew what he had to do. He jumped out of the swing and started running. His feet were quick, decisive, taking him straight back to the store like an arrow. Mr. Watson was just inside the door. Suddenly and blindly he held out the pipe. Mr. Watson gently took the pipe from the boy's hand and patted him on the

shoulder. Jess felt the warmth of Mr Watson's big hand, and felt his shoulders had become a little broader and stronger.

Everyone has his or her own experiences and daily routine. Here are three people talking about their daily lives．

There is a park near my home. But I don't go there very often. One afternoon, I went into the 1  and found it was very small. In the park there were two 2 ways. One was wide and clean, there were lots of beautiful3 on both sides, but the other was narrow and dirty, wild grass grew everywhere. I stood there for a while, at last I decided to follow the dirty way.

Ah! There was a small4 there. It was the most beautiful garden I had ever seen. There were trees and flowers. Some clean and comfortable chairs were under the trees. I thought it was the 5 place of the park.

Many people6 me that there was nothing to see in the park. Now I would love to tell them if they follow the right way, they can feel the 7 . But each time I tell them, they just smile at me without 8 . I know they don't believe me. My trip to the park that day made me understand 9 about life. In our life, we always have to make a decision. Don't be 10 to choose a different way. Be brave. You may get a big surprise!

Ronny looked like every other kid in the classroom where I volunteered at the Reading Mom in New York. 1 , he couldn't read like others in his grade because he had a speech problem. I worked with all students in his class one by one to improve their 2 skills.

On the days when it was Ronny's turn, I'd give him a warm 3 . That's why he sat close to me and opened the book as if he was opening a treasure that 4 had even seen.

I watched his 5 move slowly under each letter as he tried hard to read out. Every time he tried to read, his pronunciation sounded really 6 . In spite of that, the biggest smile would show on his face and his eyes would shine with 7 , which broke my heart.

A few weeks before the school year ended, I 8 Ronny with a book written by myself. A few days later,I returned to the school to pay a visit. I 9 Ronny on a chair near the playground, the book open in his legs.

His head teacher said, "He hasn't 10 that book since you gave it to him. Do you know that's his first book he's ever actually owned?"

Deeply moved, I 11 to Ronny, placed my hand on his shoulder and asked, "Will you read me your book?"For the next few minutes, he read to me more 12 than I'd thought. The pages were already dog-eared, as the book had been read 13 times already. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said with great 14 , "What good book!"

At that moment, as a writer, I knew 15 a writer should always do — care enough to write a story that changes a child's life, care enough to make a difference.

If there was an empty lot (一块空地) in your neighborhood (街区), what would you want to turn it into? My classmates and I have turned such an empty lot into a place of hope.

The empty lot in our neighborhood was full of wild grass. As a project for our geography class, we wanted to change the lot. We hoped it could become a place to improve (改善) people's mental (心理的) health.

After weeks of designing, researching and making models (模型), we began our plans. Now the lot is a different place. There is a wood walkway with purple benches (长椅). Kids like the relaxing color, and they come to sit together and make friends.  

A few beautiful plants grow in the ground. There is also a bright blue hopscotch (跳房子游戏) board. We make it for a group of 8 to 10 school-aged kids who have no places to play in the neighborhood. And you can see a white wall painting with red words like "Love" and "Peace".

Now, the lot gives the neighborhood hope and beauty. More people love the neighborhood and have great hopes for things of the future.
