One day, a colt(雄马驹) took a bag of wheat to the mill. As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to {#blank#}1{#/blank#}small river. The colt didn't know how deep the river was. He looked around {#blank#}2{#/blank#}saw a cow eating grass nearby. He asked, "Aunt Cow, could you please tell me if I can cross the river?" The cow told him that he could cross the river {#blank#}3{#/blank#}it was not very deep, just knee high.

While the colt {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(cross) the river, a squirrel jumped down a tree and stopped him.

The squirrel shouted, "Colt, stop! You'll drown(溺死)! One of my {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(friend)drowned just yesterday in the river." Not knowing what to do, the colt went home {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(ask)his mom.

He told his mom his experience along the way. His mother said, "My child, don't always listen {#blank#}7{#/blank#}others. You'd better go and try {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(you). Then you'll know what to do."

Later, at the river, the squirrel stopped him again, "Little horse, it's too {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(danger)!"

"No, I want to have a try," answered the colt. Then he crossed the river {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(careful).

On the other side of the river, the colt realized that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as deep as the squirrel told him.

① "When side by side two rabbits go, who can tell the buck (雄兔) from the doe (雌兔)?" China's Yang Jingru and Li Jinzi "played the buck and the doe" in the women's 1,500m short track speed skating (短道速滑) event of the Winter Youth Olympic Games on Jan 20th, 2024.

②They used the classic "rabbit strategy (策略)". The key of the "rabbit strategy" is teamwork of two skaters. One skater runs very fast from the start, while the other stays behind. This is different from the usual 1,500m speed skating strategy of keeping the same speed and then speeding up in the last few turns.

③Using the "rabbit strategy", after the first turn, Yang suddenly skated at full speed. She ran one turn faster than the other skaters and stayed at the back of the group, but nobody noticed it.

④Working with Yang, Li changed between the front and the back in the first half of the race. This made the other skaters wonder (感到疑惑) who was the "leading rabbit". In fact, when the bell rang and showed that there was only one turn to go, everyone had two turns left except Yang. As a result, Yang and Li rushed the finish line successfully while others were getting into a mess.

⑤The two Chinese short track speed players cleverly use the "rabbit strategy". They won both gold and silver medals, making it a classic case at the Winter Youth Olympics.

Cai Zongqi is a teacher from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Having lived in the United States for nearly 40 years, he has spent around 30 years sharing his understanding of Chinese literature (文学) 1 his students.

In 2007, his book How to Read Chinese Poetrycame out. 2 book includes 143 famous Chinese poems. Cai said he couldn't find good teaching materials to perfectly explain 3 Chinese poems meant. With the help of the book, American students can understand Chinese poetry 4 than before.

The book 5 is so popular has been reprinted (再次印刷) time and again. Encouraged by this, Cai went on to write some more 6 including How to Read Chinese Prose (散文) .

Cai believes that reading Chinese poetry may help readers to look at 7 life from a new point of view and live a better life. Cai started the How to Read Chinese Poetry podcast (播客) in 2022 8 the beauty of Chinese poetry and literature to more people around the world. In the podcast, poems 9 aloud in English and Chinese with classical Chinese music in the background.

Charlotte's Web(夏洛特的网)is a popular children's novel. It was written by Elwyn Brooks White. And it talks about the deep friendship between Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Wilbur was taken good care of by his little owner in a barn(谷仓). Wilbur ate and drank all day and felt very happy. He also met a good friend—Charlotte the spider. However, when the weather cooled down, he was going to become a dish on people's tables. Charlotte, Wilbur's friend, was sad about that. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

At first, Charlotte didn't have any plans. But she kept thinking every day when she worked on her web. Finally, smart Charlotte came up with a wonderful idea. She wove(织)a big web above the pen( 猪 圈 )and wrote the message" Some Pig". This made Wilbur a famous pig, and many people came to visit him. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Not only did he not get killed, but his owner also decided to look after him well for the rest of his life. However, Charlotte's life was coming to an end.

When I was a boy, I used to love walking in the woods around my home. My mom warned me several times1 to travel so far that I would lose sight of the house. Being a naughty  boy, 2 , I soon found myself walking further away, testing just 3 I could go into the woods without getting lost. After4 my way once for two hours, though, I decided that I had better leave a trail (痕迹).

There is an old saying that goes, "We will be known forever by the trails we leave. " As I have grown older and wiser, I have done my best to never13 a trail of destruction in my life as I did in the woods that day. I have instead tried to leave tracks of14 , kindness and goodness and I have also15 to show others that they can do the same and of course they have succeeded in doing this. May you always leave tracks of joy as you follow your own trail of love.
