One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching television. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Ding-Dong! Ding-Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.

Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.

Without any thinking, my brother said, “No." He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.

Then I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.

Soon he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy's family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.

“And how can I help you, little lady?” Pappy's voice was joyful.

“Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I'd like to buy a present, sir.”

“Well, let's see,” Pappy said, “who is this present for?”

“My grandpa. It's for my grandpa. But I don't know what to get.”

Pappy began to make suggestions. “How about a pocket watch? It's in good condition.” The little girl didn't answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy's face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.

“This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says grandpa loves music.”

Just then, Pappy's expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl's heart, he told her, “I'm sorry, Missy. That's not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”

The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “No, I don't think so.”

In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

In the popular imagination, the rise of self-driving cars will mean greener cities, safer roads, and happier workers. With technology, speeding, braking, and reaccelerating-which are responsible for much of the gas burned on roads, today and the resulting air pollution-would be a memory. But despite these opportunities, there are certain reasons why driver less vehicles may fail to live up to some of these expectations, or at least take a little while longer to achieve them.

First, truly automated technology - at least the kind that requires no human involvement -is rare in every sector of the economy, and there's little reason to think driving will be any different. There is a permanent need for a human backup in case driving, that means human drivers will still bear the final responsibility for the cars they're riding in.

A related challenge-particularly for driverless cars-is the complexity of the systems involved. For example, some cars today require over 100 million lines of software code (代码) to keep them running More code means more functions, which, to some degree, also means more opportunities for software errors. Driverless cars raise a challenge in this regard and possibly cause more opportunities for errors- errors that can lead to accidents.

Yet the greatest challenge facing driverless cars isn't technological, but psychological. Surveys consistently reveal global skepticism about the technology. Americans, for example, remain more worried than excited by driverless cars. Over half of the American public says it would not ride one given the opportunity. This shows a deep-seated lack of trust in the technology. Similar ideas have been expressed worldwide.

What's more likely is that human drivers will continue applying some control over their cars, regardless of how automated those cars are. Some may quarrel with this idea. But automakers have long been preparing for it. Just ask Nissan, Waymo, and Zoo, all of which are exploring ways for human drivers to retake control of a car should automation fail. In other words, driverless does not-and will not-mean humanless.

The fire is spreading toward him. What are you going to do?

The passers-by who were very brave took immediate action and they rushed in to help. The fire was moving closer. A few people tried to lift the car, but hardly moved it. Luckily, by their joint efforts, they finally lifted the 3,000-pound burning vehicle up onto two wheels while another person pulled the young driver out.

    Loneliness Peaks

For years America has been talking about obesity, but a new study points to a more serious health issue: isolation and loneliness.

Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need — crucial to both well-being and survival. Extreme examples show infants who lack human contact in care fail to grow and often die. Indeed, social isolation has been used as a form of punishment. According to Julianne Holt-Lunstad, the lead author of the study, an increasing portion of the U.S. population now population now experiences isolation regularly. Over 42 million adults above age 45 in the U.S. are estimated to be suffering from chronic(长期的)loneliness.

The study of 340 adults between the ages of 27 and 101 living in San Diego identified three key age ranges when people felt the loneliest. Participants who had the highest levels of loneliness were in their late-20s, mid-50s and late-80s. While it may come as a surprise that people in their late-20s suffered from loneliness, a larger survey shows they actually may suffer the hardest.

With an increasing number of people working from home, watching television, getting into an addiction to electronic devices, it has become too easy to be alone, even if that's not a person's intention. Modern day conveniences like having anything we want delivered make it possible to never need to leave the house. So, not surprisingly, those with frequent social contact usually feel less lonely than those with few social ties.

Mounting evidence suggests social isolation and loneliness significantly impact our health, and even shorten our lives, just like obesity. This study isn't the first time loneliness has been flagged as an emerging health issue. Therefore, reducing both isolation and loneliness is important for quality of life and well-being.
