It shows just how much Chinese people {#blank#}1{#/blank#} growing vegetables. China has a lot of available land for planting things. For {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, Chinese people made a living through farming. The Book of Songs《诗经》, written 2,500 years ago, records many {#blank#}3{#/blank#} of vegetables.

Nowadays, even though some Chinese people no longer have a lot of land, they still grow vegetables {#blank#}4{#/blank#} they can. Xue Ling, 35, is one of them. Since 2010, she has been planting vegetables on the balcony (阳台) of {#blank#}5{#/blank#} apartment in Jinan, Shandong province. "It's the only way to keep my food, at least the vegetables, clean and {#blank#}6{#/blank#}," she said. Caroline Ma from Hong Kong grows vegetables {#blank#}7{#/blank#} a hobby. In 2020, Ma started farming on her rooftop and {#blank#}8{#/blank#} planting seeds that she collected during her travels. For Ma, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} is a meditative (冥想的) experience. "I am in my own little world and I can forget about my problems," she said.

It seems that planting vegetables brings {#blank#}10{#/blank#} than just food for Chinese people.

Music will take you away from all the stress for a {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Country is simple music from the southern states of America. It was the traditional music of the American countryside. Many country music songs are about {#blank#}2{#/blank#} a group, the lives of farmers. They {#blank#}3{#/blank#} us that the best things in life are free —laughter, friends, family, and the beauty of nature and the countryside. In the 1920s, country songs were played on the radio and were made into {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. In recent years, many musicians have made country music a little different from the one in the past. These {#blank#}5{#/blank#} make the songs sound even better. 

Tina is a thirteen-year-old middle school student. Last year, she went to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} summer school in France and stayed with a local family, the Truffauts. 

At first, things didn't go well {#blank#}2{#/blank#} she couldn't speak French. Simple things like finding the right bus stop became big problems. The Truffauts helped her a lot and treated her like part of the family. They played{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (game) and shared traditional food with her. Tina was helpful as well. She did some housework with the family every day. On the weekend, she {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (join) a community club and did volunteer work. For most of the time, she used body language to communicate. People showed {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (they) thanks with smiles and she would always smile back. Language was not a problem {#blank#}6{#/blank#} her any more. As a new member of the club, Tina {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (invite) to have parties with the other members. Day by day, she made more friends. Tina began {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (love) her new life. "A smile is a second language we were born to speak. It is also the best gift I have got,"she often said{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (proud) .

Smiles and a helping hand can always make people {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (close) than a language can.
