As we know, there are differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Let's look at some words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, "a homeless dog", "a mad dog", "a running dog" and "a dog catching a mouse", have bad meanings. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. In English, people use the dog to describe good actions. For example, "you are a lucky dog" means you are a lucky person. And "every dog has its day" means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person's serious illness, they say "sick as a dog". The word "dog­tired" means very tired.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. But in Western culture, "cat" is often used to describe a woman who is unkind. There are many other examples of how "cat" is used differently as well.

   {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries.

Nowadays，as there are more choices for students，some students can't stand food in the school dining hall and they call the takeout（卖） food. Many students like ordering food instead of eating at the school dining hall. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The students can't choose what they want to eat. They can only eat the food provided by the dining hall. 

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} The answer is no. Most students can't make money，but ordering food is a little expensive. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Students only need to pay 10 yuan for one meal and there are always different dishes and one kind of soup. When ordering food，I have never found a dish which is less than 10 yuan，and the most important is that the food we order may be not clean. 

As ordering takeout is getting more and more popular，many people may think it's a new thing in China. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} According to history books，Emperor Xiaozong liked to order takeout late at night. His servants then went around the city to pick up the dishes and bring them back to the palace. 

Common people also ordered takeout. Restaurant waiters would go out into the streets and shout out which dishes could be ordered that day. People could then place an order. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

In the famous Song Dynasty painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival，a takeout worker can be seen with food in hand. 

According to the Chinese lunar calendar* , 12 animals mark 12 different years-rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pip. Your year of birth decides your zodiac. Some people believe that people born under the same zodiac share similar characteristics*. Here are some zodiac signs and their characteristics. 

The ox is the second animal in the Chinese zodiac. In one folk story(民间传说), all of the animals held a race to choose the 12 animals of the zodiac. The ox was in the first place. But it didn't see a rat on its back. When the ox was close to the finishing line, the rat jumped down and became the winner!It is believed that people born in the Year of the Ox are patient and hard-working! But they can be stubborn* sometimes. 

It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon are creative, confident, outgoing and quick-tempered(性急的). They also like to help others. They're warm-hearted so that they may have many friends. 

Chinese people believe that those who are born in the Year of the Rooster are active. They also like to be the center of attention and always look beautiful. They are the happiest when they are surrounded by others, whether at a party or just around friends. 

Jason and his father were going to a supermarket by car to pick up some apples. It had been an unusual day. The sky was dark but there were few clouds. As they drove up the street, there started to be a loud sound heard across the ground.

Jason's father immediately realized that a tornado(龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out immediately. Jason and his father got out of the car and made their way to the closest building. By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Jason couldn't see his dad anymore. He also realized that he wasn't getting to the building fast enough. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.

As he made his way towards the building, he noticed a field to his right. He could see an irrigation ditch (灌溉渠). He felt really afraid inside because he'd never been in a tornado before. His heart began to race and he could feel sweat dripping down from his face. In a panic, he started running towards the ditch as fast as he could. He stumbled(绊倒)a bit as he climbed down into it, but soon he was lying flat on the ground, hiding inside. He could hear his heart beating even more loudly and felt his whole body shaking.

After a while, the wind died down and the loud roaring sound was gone. Jason slowly lifted his head and nervously looked around. What he saw was a great mess. Jason could hardly recognize the buildings in front of him because of all the damage.

He stood up and with his legs shaking and walked to the building. Once there, he pushed the door open and went inside. It was a public building owned by the city. It was empty, but Jason could hear noises further inside. He walked into the large room and saw his dad. He ran across the room and gave him a big hug.

"Jason! How are you? I' ve been so worried about you!" said his father. "I couldn't find you anywhere!"

Jason breathed a sigh of a relief(松了一口气) and sat down. He did have a story to tell!

① Is it common to see grass on the way to school every day? Is grass so common that you probably don't even notice it? Do you take the grass for granted? Do you know that there is also some special grass that grows on the ocean floor? The Seagrass, an underwater plant that grows on the ocean floor, is not only very important for sea life but also helps prevent global warming. However, scientists and researchers don't know exactly how much seagrass is at the bottom of the ocean. With the help of tiger sharks, a team of researchers has discovered the world's largest seagrass meadow( grassland) on the seafloor near the Bahamas.

② Seagrass meadows are home to fish, shellfish, and so on. Large sea animals, such as sharks, also spend a lot of time there looking for food. Seagrass can grow in very deep and dark waters, making it difficult for people to find. But sharks can dive deep into the water and get to the areas people cannot reach.

③ After noticing tiger sharks swimming through seagrass off the Bahamas, an American scientist worked with a seagrass expert, trying to map the locations of those hard-to-find plants. The researchers fitted seven tiger sharks with cameras. Since tiger sharks swim in groups, they placed tracking tags(跟踪器) on eight other sharks to find out exactly where the animals swam. They collected hours of videos of the tiger sharks swimming through seagrass.

④ The researchers found more seagrass near the Bahamas than they expected - - - in fact, they believe that there is more seagrass(41%) than anywhere else on Earth. Researchers and scientists were very happy about this finding. However, more research is needed to discover the true size of the seagrass meadow.

⑤ In order to study about the underwater world, scientists often depend on divers and boats, but this team found that working with animals improved their understanding. They are now placing cameras on sea turtles to study seagrass in the Red Sea. Hopefully, more mysteries about seagrass will be solved.

I was in a shopping mall for two hours, so I decided to go and get a cup of coffee. As I was making my way   to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman poorly dressed sitting near the shop. I knew from the first sight that he needed help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was enjoying it. It was clear that he had a problem with his right eye. I then joined the line and waited to be served.

Then it happened, one of the most beautiful gestures I had ever seen in my life. There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. The next thing I knew was that the young man handed the waitress 20 dollars and requested a glass of juice as a favor(善行). The waitress looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside, as well as the change from the 20 dollars. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe. Then there was a wonderful exchange between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I could take a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.

 As I was considering this event later, I wondered why the young man didn' t perform this act of kindness himself. Maybe he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire(激励) others to do something for this old man as well.
