When I was in school, I volunteered to work in a hospital for some time.

On one visit, I carefully entered a dark room  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(find) an elderly man lying in bed. I firstly thought he was sleeping. When I moved much  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(close), however, I realised he was very much awake. He wanted to communicate something,   {#blank#}3{#/blank#}I couldn't make sense of what he was saying. He seemed quite weak, and I couldn't tell if he  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(be) in pain or just frightened. I knew nothing  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}him, and I felt totally helpless. He clearly didn't want me to leave him, but I felt so lost and uncomfortable that I had to leave the room after only a couple of  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(minute).

The next time I was at  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}same hospital and saw him again, he immediately said,"I remember you. You gave me hope in my darkest hour that evening!"I was so  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(surprise) that I didn't know how to answer.

In the short moment of  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(I)staying there, I did nothing at all. But surprisingly he found something he needed in me, just  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} I was there.

I have thought about this thing often over the past years. It makes me want to offer whatever kindness I can to others, and I try to make it out and appreciate (欣赏) it.

"It is time to present a modern China and ordinary Chinese people to the world instead of always focusing on the country's 5,000-year history," Zhang Yimou, the chief1 of the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, said in Beijing on Friday.

The children singing the Olympic anthem (会歌) and the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics theme2 were primary school students, many with no stage experience.

Training, which began in October, mainly took place on weekends in schools or workplaces. When the rehearsals (排练) were3 in Beijing's National Stadium, where the opening ceremony would be held, the organizers had to4 desks for the children to do homework during breaks, 5 most of them were at school. Sometimes, teachers would hold classes on site while students were waiting to rehearse.

The children came from Fuping, a small county (县) in Hebei. Many live in villages and their parents are6 .

It was the first time the 44 little singers had left home to7 in Beijing, a moment even more memorable for8 during Chinese Lunar New Year, usually a time for families to get together.

"Most don't have any singing experience. It will be a(n)9 experience for them in their whole lives," said their headmaster, Liu Kai.

"They were not performing. They were playing, all very happy and relaxed," Zhang Yimou said. "We wanted to present a modern China and the lives of10 Chinese people. There were no great performers, but everyone was true, which touched the audiences' hearts."

Today is December 31st. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} We call it New Year's Eve. Tomorrow is January 1st. That's the first day of the new year. My brother Tom and I are helping our parents. We are getting ready for a big party.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} They invite(邀请) all their friends to our house. There is lots of food and drink.

Tom and I love New Year's Eve. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} But on New Year's Eve, we go to sleep after midnight.

Just before midnight, everyone counts the seconds until 12 o' clock. We shout( 呼 喊 )," Ten… nine... eight... seven... six... five... four... three... two... one." And then everyone shouts," {#blank#}4{#/blank#}" We all hold hands and sing songs. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Soon after the games, Tom and I go to bed. New Year's Eve is the best night of the year!

 Last Sunday evening, my parents went out for a walk with my sister. But I studied alone at home because I would have an English test. Suddenly, I saw bright light in my neighbor's kitchen. I thought he was cooking, so I went on studying.

Soon, there was a terrible smell in the air and I thought something was wrong. I went out and saw fire coming out of my neighbor's kitchen. So I shouted" Fire, Fire!" But no one heard or came out.

I ran quickly to my house to call 911, and then I rang my neighbor's doorbell, knocked at the door, but there was no response. I got into the house through the window and found my neighbor sleeping in his bedroom. I woke him up and we rushed out of the house together.

We tried our best to pour water through the kitchen window, but the fire was too heavy. Luckily, the firemen came and put out the fire quickly. When my parents came back, they found I was dirty and tired. After my neighbor told them the whole story, they were happy and said I was a brave boy.

There is a popular (受欢迎的) club at Sunshine Middle School. It's the Cooking Club. Students call it the "fun club". More and more students spend their Tuesday afternoons at the club. 

Many parents don't think cooking skills are important. They don't let their children cook at home. In fact, the kitchen is a learning lab for students. Joining the Cooking Club is a good way for them to learn different skills and feel good. 

First, students can learn how to cook. When their parents are not at home, they can take care of themselves. 

Second, students can take their food home and share it with their family. They will have a sense of achievement. 

Third, the teachers in the club teach students not only how to cook but also the science behind the food they eat. They will learn a lot about how to eat healthily. 

Last, students can practise basic Maths skills like counting and measuring, they also learn social (社交的) skills by working together and making friends.
