【盐仓24秋】外研版(2024)英语八年级上册B本Module 9 Population Unit 1 第二课时
The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling.
This is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 100 people every hour!
One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle (生活方式). Most young people, especially educated women, have a different idea on children compared with their parents. "I have one child and she is enough for me," said Linda, a doctor from Russia. "My husband and I both work full- time. We can't imagine having more than one child." Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at all. "I don't want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years," said Sally from England. Her opinion is typical (典型的) in Europe.
In Poland, the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of young people are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2004 and since then more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Even so, the population of those four countries and many other countries in West Europe is also going down.
Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families. In France, women can receive nearly $1,000 a month for a year if they have a third child. Austrian women receive about $700 a month for three years when they have their first child.
High-tech Pollution Protection Technology company Dyson has created headphones, with a purifying visor (面罩) to help people avoid polluted air. Called the Dyson Zone, it combines noise-canceling headphones with a visor that sits just in front of the nose and mouth, providing users with filtered (过滤的) air. The device is designed to fight against air and sound pollution. Watch Your Stress When we feel stressed, our bodies produce something called cortisol (皮质的). Researchers from the University of California, US, recently developed a smart watch. It can monitor cortisol levels in your sweat (汗液) and give real- time information. The watch uses a special thin film. The film collects tiny drops of sweat. It can tell you when you have a high stress level. Remember to take a deep breath. ____ Do you like watching dandelion seeds (蒲公英种子) fly in the wind? This childhood pleasure is giving scientists some new ideas. A team from the University of Washington, US, created small, solar-powered Sensors (传感器). They fly like dandelion seeds and measure things like temperature and light. Their short "hairs" help slow their fall to the ground. |
