Aunt Jia had a snack stand(小吃摊位) in our neighborhood. She was always patient with her customers. Even COVID.19 didn't influence her business.

One day, during the last Spring Festival, I saw {#blank#}1{#/blank#} large family visiting her stand. It formed a heart-warming picture: Each family member was enjoying being together. While they {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(leave), I noticed Aunt Jia felt a bit sad.

I was amazed. In{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(I) experience, she was always smiling. I went forward and ordered my favorite snack. When she was busy wrapping, I couldn't helping saying, "Happy New Year, Aunt Jia! Why don't you take a break?" Aunt Jia looked surprised,{#blank#}4{#/blank#} she soon replied, "Happy New Year! I love working here in this city. It's{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(true) cold and snowy in my hometown." I became more curious(好奇的). "Where do you come from? Aren't your family waiting for you to come home for the celebration?" Aunt Jia stopped{#blank#}6{#/blank#} a few seconds."They surely are," she answered gently. "But I have to stay here. I'm from a mountain area, where it would not be easy{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(make) money. I'd be comfortable{#blank#}8{#/blank#} I were home now. But in order to live a much{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(good) life, I must work harder." I froze, thinking about her{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(word). Having noticed my shock, Aunt Jia smiled.

The morning of December 26th was warm and sunny on Phi Phi Don Island (岛) in Thailand. The sunshine was a welcome change from the wet, rainy weather at home. After breakfast, we went to the beach. My parents played volleyball and I ran straight into the clear water. I had great fun. 

Suddenly, I heard a roar (咆哮). Then I saw a big wave (海浪). "Mark，run!" I heard my mom shout before the big wave came to me. In no time I was under the water. I tried to get out of the water, but I couldn't. Luckily, a hand pulled (拉) me up. I breathed and looked around. I was in a tree with a Thai man. 

I was shocked and was not able to move. The only thing I could do was sit and watch. The hours passed slowly. Suddenly，both the Thai man and I saw a plane and we started shouting. The pilot saw us and came to save us. Half an hour later we were in the hills. A lot of people were there. I felt lonely and lost. Just then, my mom ran to me and said, "Mark, you're here." I was relieved (放心的) at that time. 

Two days later we left the island. We felt lucky to be alive (活着), but we were sorry for the people there who lost their homes. 

In a small Chinese town lived a poor young man named Liang.He loved 1 . One night, an old man with a long beard 2 Liang in a dream.He gave Liang a paintbrush.

"Use this magic paintbrush to 3 the poor," he said, "but don't use it to help people who are 4 and greedy (贪婪的), or the skill will 5 your fingers and you will never paint again."

When Liang woke up, he 6 the paintbrush on the table by his bed. He painted a butterfly and was 7 to see it fly off the page and out of the window.

Liang ran out of his little house and started painting things for people. He painted a buffalo (水牛) to help a farmer, food for 8 people and clothes for people who were cold.

A rich man, however, 9 about the paintbrush and asked Liang to paint some gold for him, 10 Liang refused.

"If you don't paint for me, I'll cut your fingers off," the rich man said."Then you will 11 paint again." So Liang painted an island of gold in the middle of a blue 12 .

" 13 will I get there?" asked the rich man.

Liang painted a 14 for the rich man, who got in it and went on his way toward the island.

But when the rich man was halfway there, Liang painted a hole in the side of the boat.The boat sank(沉)into the water and 15 ever saw him again.

My father is a cook. He makes delicious food for the workers in 1 factory. The workers love him very much. I also love him, but sometimes he can 2 "stupid". 

One day, I went 3 with him. When we got home, he counted how much money we still had. Suddenly, he told me something was wrong. We got 50 yuan more than we 4 . "That's great! You can buy me the cartoon book," I said. My father said nothing but asked me 5 back to the shop together. I didn't want to follow because no one knew 6 . "It's stupid to go back," I said.

I was playing at the front gate, trying to decide whether to walk down the street to play with Jenny, when I saw a poor man coming up the road. 

"Hello, little girl, " he said, "is your mama at home?"

I nodded and opened the gate to let him get in the yard. He looked like all the homeless men who came to my home before. His messy hair hung below a shapeless hat, and his old shirt and trousers had been rained on and slept in. He smelled bad. 

He walked to the door. When my mother appeared, he asked, "Lady, could you spare something to eat?"

"I think so. Please sit on the step. "

Later, my mother came back and handed him a sandwich made from homemade bread and generous pieces of boiled meat. She also gave him a bottle of milk. "I thank you, lady, " he said. 

I played at the gate, watching the man wolf down the sandwich and empty the cup. After finishing the food, he stood up and walked back through the gate. "▲" he told me on the way out. 

Jenny had said all the homeless men told each other who would feed them. "They never come to my house!" she had said proudly and happily. 

"So why does Mama feed the poor man?" I wondered. I walked inside. "Jenny's mama says those men are too lazy to work. Why do we feed them?"

My mother smiled. "Sweetheart, we don't know why these men don't work, " she said, "but they were babies once. And their mamas loved them, just like I love you. " She put her hands on my shoulders and drew me close to her. 

"For me, I fed them for their mothers, because if you were ever hungry and had nothing to eat, I would want others' mothers to feed you. "

I seemed to find out the answer to my question and understand that. 

①Aarrav Anil, a 13-year-old boy, has had a deep interest in mechanics (机械学) since childhood. He invented a smart spoon and stood for India to attend an international competition last year. In the competition, he won the first prize. But he didn't create his smart spoon to win a prize. He noticed his uncle who has Parkinson's disease (PD) (帕金森病) try to feed himself. Food kept falling out of his mouth, making him look like a mess. Aarrav wanted to make a change.

②More than 7 million people in India have PD. The disease influences the brain, causing patients to shake uncontrollably. As the disease progresses, it leads to difficulty in eating by oneself.

③Aarrav wanted his uncle to be able to eat by himself. This encouraged the boy to look for a way to help his uncle. So he took tools to his room with sensors (传感器) and a 3D printer. But not everything went well.

④"I was sad that I couldn't find certain parts I needed in India. I had to buy some from abroad." Aarrav said in an interview.

⑤Aarrav made a first model, but the spoon handle was not easy for his uncle to hold. "I've improved the invention. It needs to be waterproof (防水的). The spoon must be easily separated, so that it can be cleaned and replaced with a fork. And the spoon needs to be deeper to hold more food." the boy said.

⑥The smart spoon is now being tested at a local college. The test is expected to be completed in early 2025. Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will be used in hospitals soon.
