I like reading. I love many different kinds of books, because they not only open my mind but also   {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(鼓励;激励) me a lot.

Up to now I have read a lot of books, such as magazines, storybooks and  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(长篇小说). But one of the books that I like best is The Story of My Life. Helen Keller wrote it in 1903. She was a blind and deaf  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(人). In the book, she wrote that she had not been able to see, hear or speak  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(自……以来) she was one year and seven months old. This unusual thing made her very sad. Luckily, she  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(遇见) her good teacher, Miss Sullivan, at the age of seven. Helen was getting  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(更高兴的) every day. Then, Miss Sullivan helped her learn how to write English words. At first, Miss Sullivan wrote some words on Helen's hands  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(用……) her own fingers again and again. Helen was a very hard-working girl. She tried as much as possible to   {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (记住) words. After that, she wrote many famous works, which was a huge   {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(成功;成就) for anyone like her.

It shows us an important truth: Nothing is difficult if you put your  {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(心) into it! This is why I like the book best.

They've been extinct (灭绝) for more than 65 million years. They left no pictures but libraries were filled with books about them. Yet, they live on in the imaginations of people. Mention the word "dinosaur" to anyone and you're sure to have something to talk about.

We have known about these strange living things for more than 200 years. Their fossil (化石) record was first discovered in 1818. The word "dinosaur" was created in 1842 by a scientist who put two Greek words together.

What we know about dinosaurs comes only through the fossil record they left behind. We can get an idea of how they looked by building their skeletons (骨架) with fossilized bones and teeth. They must have been amazing as they towered high above the other living things of their time. We do know that they lived on land and walked. Some walked on two legs. Others preferred four legs. Some were fast and others were quite slow.

We have a pretty good picture of their size and structure, but not much else is known for certain. For example, what color were they? Nobody knows. Did they cry like lions, or were their voices sweet and musical like birds? Again, how can we know? The fossil record does not speak.

Keep in mind that what we don't know about dinosaurs is far greater than what we do know about them. As with a lot of researches about that era, scientists often have to read between the lines.

"Please take my penny (便士)," Maggie said to old Dan, the fisherman, who sat on a bench repairing his nets (网). "Please take it," she said again. Old Dan smiled, and took it. "Thank you, little girl," he said.

After that, Maggie went to the beach to collect sea shells. She never thought how fast time went by. Two hours later, she sat down on a rock beside a little pool, and Dan's large dog Rover jumped down from a rock! He made a loud noise, and then began to pull her coat gently. "Rover wishes me to leave here, I see," she said, and she rose from the rock and began to go home. However, she found the place she had got down easily was now very difficult to climb up, and because the tide (潮水) had been in for some time, she found some of the stones wet and smooth.

What could poor Maggie do? She felt sad and cried, but the tide made a much louder noise than she could make. Rover jumped upon a big stone and raised his loud bark until even the tide could not drown (淹没) it. Finally, Dan heard the loud barking of the dog. He came in a boat and brought Maggie and Rover safely to the land!

"It was the penny that did it, madam," Dan said to Maggie's mother later. "I saw Rover looking at her when she put the penny so kindly into my hand—just as if he would have said, ‘Rover will be your friend now, little girl.' And I am thinking he has looked after her all day, because he never came near me after that."

Some years later, Rover came to Maggie's home with a little note, in which was written—"Will Maggie help Rover?—his master (主人) is dead."

The late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, once said: "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart. "

Mandela understood that our mother language is a very close thing to us. For people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, it helps them keep their traditions. Their language is their main connection with their ancestors(祖先). 

So it's a serious thing when a language disappears. Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are dying. 

Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did? The answer has to do with globalization (全球化). Nowadays, it's more useful to speak certain languages - English is one example - rather than others. This has killed some languages, usually ones spoken by fewer or less influential people. 

But some people aren't prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages. The United Nations has set Feb 21 as International Mother Language Day. The organization wants people to pay more attention to dying languages. 

This work is very important. As US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, "Language is the roadmap of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going. "

Taking public transportation（公共交通） in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely （很少的） see people reading during their free time. 

Are people's attitudes toward reading different here？Not really, Data （数据） released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e﹣books over regular books. 

However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the US than in China. Is there a reason for this difference？I'm not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature （文学） （From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms（《三国演义》） to the modern science﹣fiction books The Three﹣ Body Problem（《三体》）, Chinese writers have created many fantastic written works. Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not fell like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely （肯定） have to read more and do more homework than US students. So it's no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time. 

But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?

Have you ever seen a bird fly into a building? Now, some students in Shenzhen are working to help the birds and learn more about this problem. 

In March, they made a team to study bird collisions(碰撞). "Every morning, we walk around buildings with big glass before 9:00 am. That is the high time for bird activities, " Feng Yongyin said. If they see a bird hit a building, they will take photos of the bird and the place around it. Then, they put the photos onto an app called Biotracks. Scientists can use them to do more research. 

The students'careful bird-watching also made the school think about moving the basketball court(场地). That's because it is a place with many plants and birds around. "Once we found a bird's nest(巢) on the ground and put it back. Then we set up a camera, " says 14-year-old Lan Zijia. Using the camera, they saw that many students might accidentally(意外地) throw their balls at the plants and go into the green ground to get their balls. It might hit the plants and birds'nests. "We told our school about this, and our school placed a line to protect the plants and birds, " Lan said. 

Since March, the team has done 416 bird-watching studies, found five bird collisions and saved one bird.
